BACKGROUND: Peripheral inflammation is implicated in schizophrenia, however, not all individuals demonstrate inflammatory alterations. Recent studies identified inflammatory subtypes in chronic psychosis with high inflammation having worse cognitive performance and displaying neuroanatomical enlargement compared to low inflammation subtypes. It is unclear if inflammatory subtypes exist earlier in the disease course, thus, we aim to identify inflammatory subtypes in antipsychotic naïve First-Episode Schizophrenia (FES).
METHODS: 12 peripheral inflammatory markers, clinical, cognitive, and neur

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide recent evidence on real-time neurofeedback (NFB) training for auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) in schizophrenia patients.
RECENT FINDINGS: NFB is a promising technique that allows patients to gain control over their AVH by modulating their own speech-related/language-related networks including superior temporal gyrus (STG) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) using fMRI, fNIRS and EEG/MEG. A recent limited number of studies showed that while an EEG-based NFB study failed to regulate auditory-evoked potentials and reduce AVH, downregulation of STG hyperactivity

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder is associated with abnormal connectivity across emotion and reward circuits as well as other established circuits that may negatively impact treatment response. The goal of this study was to perform an exploratory reanalysis of archival data from a clinical trial to identify moderators of treatment outcome of sertraline over placebo.
METHODS: EMBARC (Establishing Moderators and Biosignatures of Antidepressant Response in Clinical Care) study participants completed magnetic resonance imaging before randomization to either sertraline or placebo for 8 weeks

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Numerous studies on behavioral addictions (BAs) have reported gray matter (GM) alterations in multiple brain regions by using voxel-based morphometry (VBM). However, findings are poorly replicated and it remains elusive whether distinct addictive behaviors are underpinned by shared abnormalities. In this meta-analysis, we integrated VBM studies on different BAs to investigate common GM abnormalities in individuals with BAs.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a prevalent anxiety disorder, but is still poorly recognized in clinical practice. The aim of this review is to provide a coherent understanding of the functional neuroanatomy of GAD; second, to discuss the current theoretical cognitive models surrounding GAD; and finally to discuss the discrepancy between fundamental research and clinical practice and highlight several potential directions for future research in this domain. A systematic review of original papers investigating the neural correlates of DSM-IV and DSM-5 defined GAD samples was undertaken in

Fifteen years ago, an influential model proposed that the human dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) detects conflict and induces adaptive control of behavior. Over the years support for this model has been mixed, in particular due to divergent findings in human versus nonhuman primates. We here review recent findings that suggest greater commonalities across species. These include equivalent behavioral consequences of conflict and similar neuronal signals in the dACC, but also a common failure of dACC lesions to reliably abolish conflict-driven behavior. We conclude that conflict might be

Chronic neuropathic pain is estimated to affect 3%-4.5% of the worldwide population. It is associated with significant loss of productive time, withdrawal from the workforce, development of mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, and disruption of family and social life. Current medical therapeutics often fail to adequately treat chronic neuropathic pain. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting subcortical structures such as the periaqueductal gray, the ventral posterior lateral and medial thalamic nuclei, and the internal capsule has been investigated for the relief of refractory neurop

BACKGROUND: Gliomas of the medial frontal lobe extending into the gyrus cinguli represent a challenging neurosurgical entity because of their deep location, complex vascular anatomy, and proximity to functionally significant cortical and subcortical structures. Awake craniotomy with functional mapping, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based planning, neuronavigation, and cortical/subcortical stimulation represents an important contemporary strategy for maximal safe glioma resection, particularly for tumors located within or near eloquent networks. However, in carefully selected cases, standard m

The cingulate cortex plays a central role in emotion, motivation, decision-making and motor control, yet its internal organization in the macaque brain remains debated. In the present study, we examined the cyto- and receptor architectonic organization of the macaque cingulate cortex and provide a 3D parcellation of the identified areas in both surface and volumetric representations. Multivariate receptor analyses consistently separated areas of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC) from those of the posterior midcingulate cortex (pMCC) and posterior cingu

Remembering object locations is crucial for survival, yet how the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) encodes spatial features across repeated experiences has not been fully characterized. Using longitudinal calcium imaging in freely moving mice, we tracked excitatory ACC neurons while animals explored objects across multiple days. We demonstrate that the ACC employs a highly dynamic coding strategy: while the overall proportion of object-responsive neurons remains constant across sessions, the specific identities of these cells fluctuate, showing a continuous turnover alongside a small, stable co

Experience in bilingual language control is often accompanied by changes in the structure and function of the brain. Brain structural changes are also often closely related to changes in functions. Previous studies, however, have not directly explored the relationship between structural connectivity and effective functional connectivity of the brain during bilingual language control, and whether the two types of connectivity are associated with behavioral performance of language control. Using behavioral performance, functional, and diffusion imaging techniques, we found that: (1) during langu

This review summarizes the current state of neuroimaging research on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), which allows for the examination of white matter abnormalities in the brain. DTI studies on individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) consistently demonstrate widespread reductions in white matter integrity in various regions of the brain, including the corpus callosum, anterior and posterior cingulate cortex, and prefrontal cortex, which are involved in emotion regulation, decision-making, and cognitive control. However, the reviewed studies

Communication between the cerebellum and forebrain structures is necessary for motor learning and has been implicated in a variety of cognitive functions. The exact nature of cerebellar-forebrain interactions supporting behavior and cognition is not known. We examined how local and network activity support learning by simultaneously recording neural activity in the cerebellum, amygdala, and anterior cingulate cortex while male and female rats were trained in trace eyeblink conditioning. Initially, the cerebellum and forebrain signal the contingency between external stimuli through increases in

Meta-analyses suggest a sustained alleviation of depressive symptoms through glabellar botulinum toxin (BTX) injections. This can be explained by the disruption of facial feedback loops, which may moderate and reinforce the experience of negative emotions. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by excessive negative emotions. Here, a seed-based resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) analysis following BTX (N = 24) or acupuncture (ACU, N = 21) treatment in BPD is presented on areas related to the motor system and emotion processing. RsFC in BPD using a seed-based approach

BACKGROUND: Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is predominantly considered a dysfunction in cortico-cortical transmission, with limited direct investigation of cortical-subcortical transmission. Thus, we aimed to characterize the metabolic connectivity between areas of the limbic cortico-striato-thalamic-cortical (CSTC) circuit in presymptomatic and symptomatic bvFTD patients.
METHODS: Thirty-three bvFTD patients and 33 unrelated healthy controls were recruited for this study. Additionally, six asymptomatic carriers of the MAPT P301L mutation were compared with 12 non-carriers

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with aberrant emotional information processing while little is known about non-emotional cognitive processing biases. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) has been implicated in SAD neuropathology and is activated both by emotional and non-affective cognitive challenges like the Multisource Interference Task (MSIT).
METHODS: Here, we used fMRI to compare dACC activity and test performance during MSIT in 69 SAD patients and 38 healthy controls. In addition to patient-control comparisons, we examined whether neural activity in the d

In this review, the semiology, and characteristics of noninvasive investigations suggestive of anterior cingulate and anterior midcingulate epilepsy are detailed by the authors. The clinical presentation is representative of a recently recognized rostrocaudal gradient of functional connectivity with seizures of the anterior cingulate cortex manifesting emotional and interoceptive aura followed by a hyperkinetic or complex motor seizures. The few reports of anterior midcingulate epilepsy show a trend toward a higher proportion of sensory auras and premotor semiology. Ictal pouting, vocalization

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders (EDs) share similarities in terms of clinical characteristics and deficits in inhibitory control.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether inhibitory control could serve as a common behavioural phenotype between OCD and EDs and whether it might be underpinned by shared and/or distinct neural signatures.
METHOD: We performed a quantitative meta-analysis of brain function abnormalities during the inhibitory control task-based functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scan across patients with OCD and EDs using seed-based d mappin

PURPOSE: The cingulate gyrus is a potential surgical area to treat tumours, psychiatric diseases, intractable pain and vascular malformations. The aim of the study was to define the topographic anatomy and arterial supply of the cingulate gyrus located on the medial surface of the cerebral hemisphere.
METHODS: We studied thirty-six hemispheres, each hemisected in the midsagittal plane. The vertical thickness of the cingulate gyrus was measured at the anterior commissure (AC), posterior commissure (PC), and genu levels of the corpus callosum. The branches of the anterior and posterior cerebral

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study compared resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the salience network (SN) between rotating shift workers (RSWs) and controls. Furthermore, we examined whether rsFC of the SN was correlated with sleep, emotion, cognition, and attention.
METHODS: The 60 RSWs and 57 controls enrolled in this study completed self-report questionnaires and sleep diaries to assess subjective sleep quality, and polysomnography and actigraphy to evaluate objective sleep and 24-hour rest-activity rhythm parameters. The participants also underwent resting-state functional magnetic
