The effects of short periods of immobilization on the hamster circadian clock.

Recent findings indicate that stimuli which induce an acute increase in locomotor activity can induce phase shifts in the circadian clock of hamsters. Support for the actual role of the acute increase in activity in the mediation of these phase shifts is provided by the observation that immobilization can totally block phase shifts in the activity rhythm that are normally induced in response to exposure to two of these stimuli, either a pulse of darkness or an injection of a benzodiazepine. In order to further examine the effects of immobilization on the circadian system of hamsters, 3 studies

Cholinergic receptor blockade in the rat impairs locale but not taxon strategies for place navigation in a swimming pool.

Normal rats and rats drugged with atropine sulfate, a cholinergic muscarinic blocker, were evaluated in the Morris water task for their use of spatial navigation strategies. Atropine-treated rats were impaired on a place response of swimming to a platform hidden in a pool filled with opaque water. With extended training, they did learn the place response, though not with control precision, as shown by better than chance heading angles upon swim initiation, searches in the old location for a platform that had been moved, and by correct swims from novel starting locations. Acquisition could not

Standing balance responses and habituation to sinusoidal optic flow virtual reality perturbations.

This study investigated the effects of prolonged virtual reality (VR) optic flow exposure on standing balance, focusing on how optic flow parameters influence balance responses and the potential for habituation. While short-term responses to optic flow are well-documented, the impact of extended VR immersion (up to 60 min) on balance remains poorly understood. Twenty healthy young adults were exposed to sinusoidal optic flow stimuli in a novel VR environment, with different velocities (0.1, 1, 10 m/s) and frequencies (0.125, 0.25, 0.5 Hz). Balance responses were assessed using a force plate to

Exploring sensory sensitivity, cortical excitability, and habituation in episodic migraine, as a function of age and disease severity, using the pattern-reversal task.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a cyclic, neurosensory disorder characterized by recurrent headaches and altered sensory processing. The latter is manifested in hypersensitivity to visual stimuli, measured with questionnaires and sensory thresholds, as well as in abnormal cortical excitability and a lack of habituation, assessed with visual evoked potentials elicited by pattern-reversal stimulation. Here, the goal was to determine whether factors such as age and/or disease severity may exert a modulatory influence on sensory sensitivity, cortical excitability, and habituation. METHODS: Two similar ex

Extinction theory & anorexia nervosa: Deepening therapeutic mechanisms.

By virtue of adopting the core symptomatic fear (i.e., a fear of weight gain) as a primary treatment target, the treatment of AN centrally involves exposure-driven processes. However, exposure trials targeting the fear of weight gain in AN have been sparse, yielding mixed results to date. In translating extinction theory to the treatment of AN, it is likely that the absence of a clear distinction between what constitutes the core feared cue and the core feared outcome has stymied the application of exposure treatments in AN. This review considers several configurations of the core fear associa

Do bells affect behaviour and heart rate variability in grazing dairy cows?

In alpine regions cows are often equipped with bells. The present study investigated the impact of wearing a bell on behaviour and heart rate variability in dairy cows. Nineteen non-lactating Brown-Swiss cows with bell experience were assigned to three different treatments. For 3 days each, cows were equipped with no bell (control), with a bell with inactivated clapper (silent bell) or with a functional bell (functional bell). The bells weighed 5.5 kg and had frequencies between 532 Hz and 2.8 kHz and amplitudes between 90 and 113 dB at a distance of 20 cm. Data were collected on either the fi

[Behavioral response of older women in a stochastic environment].

The article presents the results of studies of the behavioral response in 63 elderly women. With the help of a computer complex for psychophysiological studies KPFK-99 "Binatest" we estimated figures of restructuring strategies of decision making in a stochastic environment. The leading psychophysiological mechanisms of behavioral response of older women in a stochastic environment are presented as a high-speed component of decision-making process, and search activity as a dynamic component of motivational orientation dominates over the informational component of the decision-making on the tem

Effects of blastomere biopsy on post-natal growth and behavior in mice.

STUDY QUESTION: Does blastomere biopsy (BB) of preimplantation embryos induce long-term effects on their growth and post-natal behavior? SUMMARY ANSWER: BB induces long-term effects on body weight and behavior in male mice. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: BB is an essential technique for performing preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), a screening test that can detect genetic abnormalities of embryos before their transfer in utero. There is limited understanding of the post-natal consequences and safety of BB. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Offspring who had a BB performed as embryos, as well as c

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) of the visual cortex: a proof-of-concept study based on interictal electrophysiological abnormalities in migraine.

BACKGROUND: Preventive pharmacotherapy for migraine is not satisfactory because of the low efficacy/tolerability ratio of many available drugs. Novel and more efficient preventive strategies are therefore warranted. Abnormal excitability of cortical areas appears to play a pivotal role in migraine pathophysiology. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive and safe technique that is able to durably modulate the activity of the underlying cerebral cortex, and is being tested in various medical indications. The results of small open studies using tDCS in migraine prophylaxi

Sound support: intermodal information facilitates infants' perception of an occluded trajectory.

In a visual occlusion task, 4-month-olds were given a dynamic sound cue (following the trajectory of an object), or a static cue (sound remained stationary). Infants' oculomotor anticipations were greater in the Dynamic condition, suggesting that representations of visual occlusion were supported by auditory information.

Changes in visual-evoked potential habituation induced by hyperventilation in migraine.

Hyperventilation is often associated with stress, an established trigger factor for migraine. Between attacks, migraine is associated with a deficit in habituation to visual-evoked potentials (VEP) that worsens just before the attack. Hyperventilation slows electroencephalographic (EEG) activity and decreases the functional response in the occipital cortex during visual stimulation. The neural mechanisms underlying deficient-evoked potential habituation in migraineurs remain unclear. To find out whether hyperventilation alters VEP habituation, we recorded VEPs before and after experimentally i

Abnormalities of the vestibulo-collic reflex are similar in migraineurs with and without vertigo.

The amplitude and habituation of the click-evoked vestibulo-collic reflex (VCR) was found reduced between attacks in migraineurs without complaints of ictal or interictal vertigo or dizziness, compared with healthy subjects. As a next step we recorded VCR in 17 migraine patients (eight with migraine without aura and nine with migraine with aura) who presented ictal migrainous vertigo according to the criteria defined by Neuhauser et al., using a method described previously. Migraineurs with migrainous vertigo have similar VCR abnormalities as patients without vertigo, i.e. a decreased global a

The role of disgust in faintness elicited by blood and injection stimuli.

To examine the role of disgust in blood-injection fear and faintness, 79 individuals high and low in disgust and distressed either more by blood or injections were exposed to both a blood slide and a needle slide. Self-reported faintness and systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured. High disgust individuals reported more faintness to both slides, but those who were more distressed by blood reported more faintness to the blood slide and those who were more distressed by needles reported more fear to the needle slide. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure assessments manifested a

Individual differences in the responses of naïve rhesus monkeys to snakes.

The authors demonstrated individual differences in inhibited behavior and withdrawal responses of laboratory-born rhesus monkeys when initially exposed to a snake. Most monkeys displayed a small significant increase in their behavioral inhibition in the presence of a snake. A few monkeys had marked responses, and some actively withdrew. Although the responses of the most extreme laboratory-born monkeys were comparable to feral-born monkeys, the responses of the laboratory-born monkeys rapidly habituated. The individual differences in the responses of naïve monkeys likely reflect a continuum fr

Spatiotemporal integration and object perception in infancy: perceiving unity versus form.

3 experiments investigated 5-month-old infants' perception of an object whose center was fully occluded and whose ends were visible only in succession. Infants perceived this object as one connected whole when the ends of the object underwent a common motion behind the occluder, but not when the ends were stationary. Although infants perceived the connectedness of the object, they did not appear to perceive the object's shape. These findings suggest (a) that young infants are capable of integrating information over time to perceive object unity but not object form, (b) that young infants perce

A variant of guided exposure to mourning for use with treatment resistant patients.

We report a variant of "guided exposure to mourning," designed for use with patients who have proved resistant to other treatments for unresolved, morbid grief. The work provides some indication as to when such behavioral techniques for resolution of morbid grief are likely to prove successful, and when not.

Is agoraphobia harder to treat? A comparison of agoraphobics' and simple phobics' response to treatment.

Agoraphobia is reputed to be more difficult to treat than simple phobia. In a test of this supposition, 38 agoraphobics and 19 simple phobics were each given 10 sessions of graduated in vivo exposure. They were assessed before and after therapy using a behavioral avoidance test, behavioral diaries, and self-report measures. Analysis of covariance revealed unequivocal posttest differences only on self-assessed disability level; agoraphobics had changed less in their report of global disability immediately following treatment but not at follow-up. Sixty-eight percent of the simple phobics showed

Field potential response changes in the rabbit olfactory bulb accompany behavioral habituation during the repeated presentation of unreinforced odors.

Experiments were performed on waking rabbits to investigate the changes in both sniffing behavior and local field potential responses in the olfactory bulb during repeated exposure to unreinforced odors. Six rabbits were each implanted with 2 pairs of electrodes for differential recording of the bulbar extracellular field potential. Each animal was given 3 sequential sessions to each of 2 separate odors on 6 consecutive days, while monitoring the bulbar field potential activity and sniffing behavior. Behavioral sniffing responses exhibited rapid within-session decrement in amplitude and long t
