Potential prognostic factors for hamstring muscle injury in elite male soccer players: A prospective study.

Hamstring injuries remain the most common injury type across many professional sports. Despite a variety of intervention strategies, its incidence in soccer players playing in the UEFA Champions League has increased by 4% per year over the last decade. Test batteries trying to identify potential risk factors have produced inconclusive results. The purpose of the current study was to prospectively record hamstring injuries, to investigate the incidence and characteristics of the injuries, and to identify possible risk factors in elite male soccer players, playing in the Kosovo national premier

The use of MRI to evaluate posterior thigh muscle activity and damage during nordic hamstring exercise.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the Nordic hamstring exercise on the biceps femoris long head (BFlh), biceps femoris short head (BFsh), semitendinosus (SMT), and semimembranosus (SMM) muscles. The Nordic hamstring strengthening exercise has been widely used in injury prevention, yet not much is known about the site-specific activation of this exercise on different muscles of the thigh. Eight male national-level referees were assigned to a Nordic hamstring exercise protocol (5 sets of 8 repetitions). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the subjects' thighs was performed

[Consequences and prediction of hamstring muscle injury with concentric and eccentric isokinetic parameters in elite soccer players].

OBJECTIVE: To know if isokinetic parameters identify previous hamstring (H) injury and predict a new muscle injury in high-level soccer player. METHOD: Concentric (con) and eccentric (ecc) isokinetic torque was measured at the angular speed of 60 degrees /s in 28 elite soccer players (23 years +/- 3.3; 74 kg +/- 7.5; 178 cm +/- 6.5). First, 11 players, victims of 15 moderate or major hamstring injuries in the preceding 2 years, were compared with 17 players without previous hamstring injury. Comparisons were carried out from isokinetic knee flexors-extensors ratios [Hcon/Qcon and Hecc/Qcon] a

Acute Structural, Functional, and Biochemical Responses to a High- and Low-Volume Foam Rolling Exercise on the Hamstring Muscles: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Foam rolling (FR) is widely used to acutely enhance range of motion, yet the influence of different application volumes on neuromuscular, structural, and biochemical responses remains unclear. This study investigated the acute effects of low- and high-volume hamstrings FR interventions. Fifty-seven healthy male participants were randomly assigned to a high-volume FR group (IG10; 10 min per posterior thigh), a low-volume FR group (IG2; 2 min per posterior thigh), or a control group (CG; 20 min rest). Pre- and post-intervention assessments included sit-and-reach (SAR) performance, shoulder circu

A Single Bout of Foam Rolling After Nordic Hamstring Exercise Improves Flexibility but Has No Effect on Muscle Stiffness or Functional Muscle Parameters.

Background and Objectives: The Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) effectively strengthens the hamstrings, reduces the risk of hamstring strain, and induces fatigue in the muscles; thus, post-NHE recovery strategies should be optimized. Foam rolling (FR) is a widely used method, with the belief that it can speed up recovery. Thus, this study investigated the acute and 48-h effects of FR following the NHE on muscle stiffness, pain pressure threshold (PPT), flexibility, countermovement jump (CmJ) height, and maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). Materials and Methods: Thirty-two active mal

Effect of different knee flexion angles with a constant hip and knee torque on the muscle forces and neuromuscular activities of hamstrings and gluteus maximus muscles.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of different knee flexion angles with a constant hip and knee torque on the muscle force and neuromuscular activity of the hamstrings and gluteus maximus. METHODS: Twenty healthy males lay in prone position and held their lower limb with hip flexion at 45° and knee flexion at either 10° or 80°. At these angles, the hip and knee torques are identical. Under three load conditions: passive (referred to as Unloaded), active (Loaded), and active with 3-kg weight added to the shank (Loaded + 3 kg), the muscle stiffness (i.e., an indicator of muscle force) and

The effect of fatigue on peak strain of hamstring muscles in dominant and non-dominant sides during sprinting: a pre-post intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Although fatigue is widely recognized as a risk factor for hamstring strain injuries, the mechanisms by which fatigue influences these injuries remain unclear. It is also uncertain whether fatigue differentially affects the risk factors for hamstring strain between lower limbs. METHODS: Nineteen male track-and-field athletes underwent a fatigue intervention, with optimal muscle length assessed pre- and post-fatigue. Key biomechanical parameters during sprinting were also analyzed before and after fatigue. RESULTS: Post-fatigue, the non-dominant limb showed significant reductions in

Effect of noxious electrical stimulation of the peroneal nerve on stretch reflex activity of the hamstring muscle in rats: possible implications of neuronal mechanisms in the development of tight hamstrings in lumbar disc herniation.

STUDY DESIGN: The effect of noxious electrical stimulation of the peroneal nerve on the stretch reflex electromyogram activity of the hamstring muscle (semitendinous) was studied. OBJECTIVE: To verify the following hypothetical mechanisms underlying tight hamstrings in lumbar disc herniation: stretch reflex muscle activity of hamstrings is increased by painful inputs from an injured spinal nerve root and the increased stretch reflex muscle activity is maintained by central sensitization. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: It is reported that stretch reflex activity of the trunk muscles is induced b

Anthropometry, spinal canal width, and flexibility of the spine and hamstring muscles in 45-55-year-old men with and without low back pain.

One hundred fifty 45-55-year-old men were divided into three groups: those with healthy backs, recurrent low back pain (LBP), and chronic LBP. These groups were studied with respect to anthropometry, spinal canal width, spinal sagittal configuration and flexibility, and the flexibility of the hamstrings musculature with straight leg raising (SLR). There were no differences between the groups with respect to anthropometry. The group with healthy backs had significantly greater lordosis and sagittal flexibility than the other groups. The width of the spinal canal was correlated to body height. T

Participant and Researcher Perceptions of Stretching Intensity and Muscle Tension in A Hamstrings and Shoulder Stretch in Healthy Young Adults.

Stretching research and practice relies heavily on internal and clinical perceptions of stretching sensation to prescribe intensity due to the lack of equipment required. No research has assessed the relationship between internal and external perceptions of stretch intensity. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between participants' stretch sensation and researchers' perception of muscle tension in two passive stretches; supine hip flexion and shoulder extension. Training status and stretching experience were considered with the 18 young adult participants. Joint angles at

Muscle Activity and Kinematics During Three Hamstring Strengthening Exercises Compared to Sprinting: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: During sprinting, the biceps femoris long head predominantly gets injured, while hamstring strengthening exercises predominantly activate the semitendinosus more effectively. Understanding how joint dominance influences hamstring activity may offer clarity on appropriate exercise selection in strengthening programs. PURPOSE: This study compared three hip-dominant hamstring exercises: the rocker, perpetuum mobile fast and slow (PMfast and PMslow) and the Nordic Hamstring exercise (NHE) on their potential to simulate sprint-like activity and kinematics. METHODS: Muscle activity of

Correlations among flexibility, stiffness, strength and muscle ultrasound parameters in older males afflicted with hamstrings tightness.

INTRODUCTION: Age-induced inflexibility may lead to significant mobility impairments and declines in well-being. However, the relationship between the structural and mechanical properties of soft tissue and joint extensibility remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between flexibility, muscle tendon unit (MTU) stiffness, muscle ultrasound characteristics, muscle strength, and hamstring flexibility prediction in older males with hamstring inflexibility. METHODS: A hundred retired old males (mean age: 67.2 ± 4.9 years) participated in this investigation. Muscle ultraso
