The development of a new orthosis (neuro-orthosis) for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome: its effect on the function and strength of the hand.

Static wrist orthoses (SWOs) are used in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) with some drawbacks. As an alternate approach to SWOs, an active closed-loop wrist control strategy based on the principles of functional electrical stimulation was proposed to limit wrist movements. The purpose of the study was to determine whether the proposed 'neuro-orthosis' (NeO) system resulted in less restriction in the hand compared to clinically accepted custom-made SWOs while limiting the wrist movements. A case-control study was designed to determine the specific effects of the system on patients

Psychometric properties of a standardized protocol of muscle strength assessment by hand-held dynamometry in healthy adults: a reliability study.

BACKGROUND: Maximal isometric muscle strength (MIMS) assessment is a key component of physiotherapists' work. Hand-held dynamometry (HHD) is a simple and quick method to obtain quantified MIMS values that have been shown to be valid, reliable, and more responsive than manual muscle testing. However, the lack of MIMS reference values for several muscle groups in healthy adults with well-known psychometric properties limits the use and the interpretation of these measures obtained with HHD in clinic. OBJECTIVE: To determine the intra- and inter-rater reliability, standard error of measurement (

Is hand grip strength a necessary supportive index in the phenotypic criteria of the GLIM-based diagnosis of malnutrition in patients with cancer?

BACKGROUND: The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) has the potential to gain global acceptance for diagnosing malnutrition. Of which, calf circumference (CC) was proposed as an alternative to evaluate the reduced muscle mass (RMM). The present study aimed to evaluate whether including the hand grip strength (HGS) was helpful for diagnosing malnutrition under the GLIM framework. METHODS: We performed a multicenter, observational cohort study including 3998 patients with cancer at two teaching hospitals. The RMM criterion was separately assessed using the calf circumference (CC

[Does the disability of shoulder, arm and hand questionnaire (DASH) replace grip strength and range of motion in outcome-evaluation?].

Scoring systems currently used to evaluate functional disabilities in upper extremity conditions frequently combine so-called "objective" parameters such as grip strength and range of motion with "subjective" parameters such as pain. Since its introduction, the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire has proven useful in the pre- and postoperative evaluation of functional limitations of the upper extremity. This study examines the relationship between DASH scores, the so-called "objective" parameters of grip strength and range of motion and those of "mixed scores" such as Krimmer

The Relationship Between Hand Grip Strength and Nutritional Status Determined by Malnutrition Inflammation Score and Biochemical Parameters in Hemodialysis Patients.

OBJECTIVE(S): In hemodialysis patients, malnutrition and inflammation are prominent determinants of mortality. Reduced muscle mass is considered to be one of the most valid criteria in malnutrition diagnosis, and hand grip strength (HGS) is used as an efficient tool for evaluating muscle functioning. The aim of this study was to determine if HGS is associated with the nutritional status determined with malnutrition-inflammation score (MIS) and biochemical parameters in HD patients. DESIGN AND METHODS: Patients who have been on hemodialysis treatment for at least 6 months were included in this

The cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CNR2) gene is associated with hand bone strength phenotypes in an ethnically homogeneous family sample.

Genetic variants within the CNR2 gene encoding the cannabinoid receptor CB2 have been shown to be associated with osteoporosis and low bone mineral density (BMD) in case-control studies. We now examined the association of polymorphisms in CNR2 with hand bone strength in an ethnically homogeneous healthy family sample of European origin (Chuvashians) living in Russia. We show that non-synonymous CNR2 SNPs are significantly associated with radiographic hand BMD and breaking bending resistance index (BBRI) by two different transmission disequilibrium tests. For both tests highly significant p val
