Effects of Tablet Tilt Angle on Hand and Wrist Muscle Activation During Digital Handwriting: A Cross-Sectional Electromyographic Study in University Students.

Background: Prolonged tablet use for digital handwriting is increasingly common in educational settings, yet optimal ergonomic positioning remains unclear. This exploratory, cross-sectional study examined how tablet tilt angle affects hand and wrist muscle activation patterns during digital handwriting. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited fifteen healthy university students (age 22.3 ± 2.2 years) who completed standardized writing tasks at three tablet tilt angles (0°, 20°, 60°). Surface electromyography recorded activation from four muscles responsible for the dynamic tripod grip: a

High-performance polydopamine and silver nanoparticle-modified MXene-based hydrogel flexible strain sensors for transfer-learning-assisted handwriting recognition and wrist-movement monitoring.

Hydrogel-based flexible strain sensors show great potential for applications in wearable electronics, human-machine interfaces, and soft robotics. However, it remains challenging to prepare hydrogel sensors with high sensitivities and wide detection ranges. Herein, we report a polydopamine and silver nanoparticle-modified MXene-based hydrogel, namely, MXene/Ag@PDA/P(AA-AM)/SA-Zn (MAPS), which exhibits a high sensitivity (with a gauge factor of 16.64), high stretchability (1100%), and short response time (0.2 s). This hydrogel-based strain sensor can be adhered to the human body surface as a we

Extrapyramidal symptoms and their relationship to clinical efficacy under perphenazine treatment. A controlled prospective handwriting-test study in 22 acutely ill schizophrenic patients.

In order to verify the hypothesis of a strict relationship between clinical improvement and extrapyramidal side-effects, especially micrographia, twenty-two acutely ill schizophrenics were treated with perphenazine in a controlled prospective 28-day trial. During the study period, psychopathometric data, prolactin plasma levels, and handwriting samples were collected. According to the remission criteria fixed before the study began (both BPRS less than or equal to 25 and GAS greater than or equal to 80 points), 45.5% (10/22) of the total patient sample were classified as treatment responders.

[Primary and secondary writing disorders in children].

Handwriting is one of the most complex motor proficiencies and is a main scholastic assignment during childhood. Basic skills are required for penmanship such as viso-spatial coordination on top of cognitive abilities such as planning, organizing and reviewing the written text. Illegible handwriting and increased variability both in time and space are some of the components causing poor penmanship. Children with difficulty in handwriting wilt write in a slower manner and usually produce excessive pressure on the pen and paper Leading to early fatigue. Handwriting difficulties could be divided

An investigation of visual contour integration ability in relation to writing performance in primary school students.

A previous study found a visual deficit in contour integration in English readers with dyslexia (Simmers & Bex, 2001). Visual contour integration may play an even more significant role in Chinese handwriting particularly due to its logographic presentation (Lam, Au, Leung, & Li-Tsang, 2011). The current study examined the relationship between children's performance in visual contour (VC) integration and Chinese handwriting. Twenty students from grade 3 to grade 6 were recruited (M=9.51, SD=1.02) from a mainstream primary school using the convenience sampling method. Ten students were identifie

Does training improve writer's cramp? An evaluation of a behavioral treatment approach using kinematic analysis.

Patients with writer's cramp (WC) show uncontrollable muscle co-contractions of agonists and antagonists and unusual postures of the upper limb during writing; their handwriting is inefficient and exhausting. Currently the treatment of choice is to inject botulinum toxin in selective hand muscles. However, this treatment has two drawbacks: it is short-lasting and may be associated with adverse side effects. An alternative behavioral treatment, namely, the handwriting training developed by Mai and coworkers, was carried out and evaluated in 50 patients with WC. A digitizing tablet was used to r

Fine motor deficiencies in children diagnosed as DCD based on poor grapho-motor ability.

A sample of 125 children from grades 4 and 5 of two normal Dutch primary schools were investigated regarding the incidence of handwriting problems and other fine motor disabilities. Handwriting quality was assessed with the concise assessment method for children's handwriting (BHK) and the school questionnaire for teachers (SQT). Two groups of 12 children each were formed, one group of good writers and a group of poor writers selected from the lower performance range. The latter group was investigated in depth by assessing general and fine motor ability using the Movement Assessment Battery fo

Dysgraphia Differs Between Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder and/or Reading Disorder.

Handwriting deficits, or dysgraphia, are present in several neurodevelopmental disorders. To investigate whether dysgraphia differs according to the associated disorder, we performed a detailed analysis of handwriting in a group of French children with developmental coordination disorders (DCD), reading disorder (RD), or comorbid RD and DCD. Handwriting deficits were investigated at the product (quality of the trace) and the process (movement that generates the trace) levels. Nineteen children with singular RD (among which eight with dysgraphia), 13 children with singular DCD (among which seve

Poor penmanship in children correlates with abnormal rhythmic tapping: a broad functional temporal impairment.

Timing is crucial for proficient motor tasks; temporal impairments may lead to dysfunctional motor activities. Although much research has been dedicated to the study of movement timing, clinical examination often overlooks temporal impairment of motor activity. The authors hypothesize that some children have a global temporal impairment leading to dysfunctional motor skills. This article checks whether temporal abnormalities detected on a simple tapping task correlate with temporal dysfunction during complex motor skills such as handwriting. Twenty-three school-aged children, 8-14 years (11.1

Dysgraphia detection through machine learning.

Dysgraphia, a disorder affecting the written expression of symbols and words, negatively impacts the academic results of pupils as well as their overall well-being. The use of automated procedures can make dysgraphia testing available to larger populations, thereby facilitating early intervention for those who need it. In this paper, we employed a machine learning approach to identify handwriting deteriorated by dysgraphia. To achieve this goal, we collected a new handwriting dataset consisting of several handwriting tasks and extracted a broad range of features to capture different aspects of
