Oral health and happiness after 3-years with causal mediation of oral functions.

OBJECTIVES: The longitudinal association between oral health and self-reported happiness among older population and its mediating pathways were unknown. This study investigated the aforementioned association and the role of three oral functions (having difficulty in speaking, problems in smiling and difficulty in chewing) as causal mediating pathways. METHODS: In this 3-year cohort study, the 2016-2019 panel data on 65 years or older independent participants from Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES) was used (N = 53,863). Poisson regression was used to calculate risk ratio (RR) of de

From smoke to smiles: Quantifying the happiness benefits of household cooking energy transition.

Existing studies that assess the impact of cooking with dirty solid fuels on human beings tend to underestimate the adverse impact on welfare. This paper aims to address this research gap by examining the happiness benefits of transitioning from solid fuel to cleaner alternatives. Using an extensive panel dataset from China, which includes 150,248 observations collected from 43,251 survey respondents interviewed between 2010 and 2018, this study employs various complementary methodologies, such as the fixed-effect model, propensity score matching, and time-varying difference-in-differences, to

Estimating the effect on happiness through question randomization: An application to blood donation.

We rely on the randomized activation of the heuristic of attribute substitution to analyze the effect of blood donation on donors' happiness. We randomly delivered two versions of a questionnaire where the happiness question is alternatively placed immediately before or after a categorical question asking about the blood donor condition of the respondent (non-donor, previously donor, donor). By comparing the answers given to the happiness question in the two versions, we find a positive effect of donating blood on donors' happiness. We discuss the pros and cons of this method to investigate th

Harnessing happiness? Uncontrollable positive emotion in bipolar disorder, major depression, and healthy adults.

The ability to adaptively exert control over negative emotions is associated with beneficial mental health outcomes. Less is known about the associated emotional sequelae surrounding controllable versus uncontrollable positive emotional experiences. The ability to harness positive emotions is of particular importance in populations involving disrupted positive emotion functioning. In the present study, participants engaged in a relived memory task in which they recalled either a controllable or uncontrollable past positive emotional experience in counterbalanced order, while concurrent experie

A replication to increase happiness indices among some people with profound multiple disabilities.

A replication of Green and Reid was made for four people with profound multiple disabilities by systematically increasing their happiness indices in a Fun Time activity during which their preferred stimuli were provided. In ABAB reversal designs, 3 of the 4 participants replicated the demonstration of the happiness indices, while the fourth individual showed reduced unhappiness indices when his preferred stimulation was presented. These effects were obtained despite the selection of preferred stimuli without formal assessment procedures and the use of brief training procedures for staff provid

Mood as an indicant of happiness: ags, sex, social class, and situational differences.

Does mood vary as a function of age, sec, or situation? In four investigations, 6,452 persons aged 4 to 99 were interrupted at leisure, at home, at school, and at work and asked to assess their mood as being happy, neutral, or unhappy. Moods of happiness and neutrality were each reported about 45% and unhappiness about 10% of the time. Females more frequently reported moods of happiness or unhappiness than males, while mood did not vary as a function of age. Persons at leisure reported more affectively pleasant moods than those at work, at home, or at school. Persons of higher socioeconomic st

Happy faces, faster stops: The cognitive benefits of dance in emotional contexts.

Dance integrates physical movement with cognitive and emotional processes, offering unique benefits beyond mere exercise. While previous studies have explored the impact of dance on response inhibition, the mechanisms by which irrelevant emotional stimuli modulate inhibition in dancers remains unclear. This study investigated the role of dance in modulating response inhibition in emotional and non-emotional contexts. We compared dancers and non-dancers on two response inhibition tasks: the non-emotional stop-signal task (NESST) and the emotional stop-signal task (ESST), which examined inhibiti

Educational convergence and the equalization of happiness during the COVID-19 pandemic in China.

INTRODUCTION: With the rapid development of the Chinese economy, happiness inequality is receiving increasing attention from both the scientific community and general public. The COVID-19 pandemic not only exerted a socio-economic impact but also contributed to the distribution of happiness among individuals in China. Therefore, this paper examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on happiness inequality in China. We specifically analyze post-pandemic shifts in this inequality, and the urban-rural disparities. METHODS: The panel data from the China family panel studies (CFPS) database (201

Happy 95th birthday to Pierre Joliot, a brilliant scientist and a wonderful friend.

It is both a privilege and a pleasure to celebrate the upcoming 95th birthday of Pierre Joliot, one of the most influential figures in modern photosynthesis research. Across more than seven decades of scientific activity, Pierre has transformed our understanding of oxygenic photosynthesis through pioneering studies of oxygen evolution, excitation-energy transfer, photosynthetic electron transport, and membrane bioenergetics. His discoveries helped establish fundamental concepts that continue to guide contemporary research, including the now-classic period-four oscillation of oxygen evolution a

Psychometric properties of the Arabic Fear of Happiness Scale in a sample of Lebanese adults.

BACKGROUND: Despite the prominence of happiness as a psychological ideal, not all individuals experience it as inherently positive. In some cultural and psychological contexts, happiness may be approached with ambivalence or apprehension, reflecting concerns about its potential consequences. The Fear of Happiness Scale (FHS) was developed to assess such beliefs. This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the FHS among Lebanese adults. METHODS: The FHS was translated to Arabic following a conventional forward-backward translation procedure and was administered to

Happy heart syndrome - The impact of different triggers on the characteristics of takotsubo syndrome.

Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is a condition of acute ventricular dysfunction mainly in aging women that is frequently precipitated by episodes of physical or emotional stress. The association with negative emotional triggers such as fear, grief, or interpersonal conflicts was observed soon after the first description of TTS three decades ago and led to the popular term "broken heart syndrome". However, more recent research shows that TTS can also be provoked by pleasant emotions in some patients, referred to as "happy heart syndrome". This review will discuss the role of stressful triggers in pati

A "happy ending" of mediastinal and abdominal lymphadenopathy associated with hepatosplenomegaly and pulmonary lesions.

Major diagnosis for mediastinal and abdominal lymphadenopathy is lymphoma and tuberculosis. Spontaneous remarkable evolution should discuss viral infection on the condition that no corticosteroids have been taken before as they could magically improve an authentic lymphoma. Trial of antituberculosis treatment that is used in some cases could lead to a misdiagnosis as the viral-infected patient can spontaneously heal as it is described in this case.

Recognising and reacting to angry and happy facial expressions: a diffusion model analysis.

Researchers have reported two biases in how people recognise and respond to angry and happy facial expressions: (1) a gender-expression bias (Becker et al. in J Pers Soc Psychol, 92(2):179-190, https://doi.org/10.1037/0022-3514.92.2.179 , 2007)-faster identification of male faces as angry and female faces as happy and (2) an approach-avoidance bias-faster avoidance of people who appear angry and faster approach responses people who appear happy (Heuer et al. in Behav Res The, 45(12):2990-3001, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.brat.2007.08.010 2007; Marsh et al. in Emotion, 5(1), 119-124, https://doi.

Being present: Focusing on the present predicts improvements in life satisfaction but not happiness.

Mindfulness theorists suggest that people spend most of their time focusing on the past or future rather than the present. Despite the prevalence of this assumption, no research that we are aware of has evaluated whether it is true or what the implications of focusing on the present are for subjective well-being. We addressed this issue by using experience sampling to examine how frequently people focus on the present throughout the day over the course of a week and whether focusing on the present predicts improvements in the 2 components of subjective well-being over time-how people feel and

Predictor variables of happiness and its connection with risk and protective factors for health.

Great thinkers, philosophers, scientists, and artists from History have often been concerned about one of the most important elements of life: happiness. The study had four goals: (1) To analyze possible differences in feelings of happiness as a function of sex and age; (2) To explore the relations of happiness with risk factors (psychopathological symptoms, behavior problems) and protective factors (self-concept-self-esteem, cooperative behavior, social skills) for health; (3) To identify predictor variables of happiness; and (4) To explore whether self-esteem mediates the relationship betwee

The lipid story in chronic kidney disease: a long story with a happy end?

Cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality increase with the severity of kidney disease, reaching 30 times higher mortality rates in dialysis patients compared with the general population. Although dyslipidemia is a well-established CV risk factor in the general population, the relationship between lipid disorders and CV risk in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is less clear. Despite the clear evidence that statins reduce the risk of atherosclerotic events and death from cardiac causes in individuals without CKD, the use of statins in patients with kidney disease is significantly le

Happy but not so approachable: the social judgments of individuals with generalized social phobia.

BACKGROUND: We examined social approachability judgments in a psychiatric population that frequently experiences interpersonal difficulties and reduced social satisfaction, individuals with generalized social phobia (gSP). METHODS: Our objective was to broaden the understanding of the social cognitive tendencies of individuals with gSP by systematically investigating their interpretation of positive facial expressions. We hypothesized that approachability ratings would be lower for positive as well as negative emotional faces in the gSP group compared to the healthy comparison group. Each par

Epidemiology and risk factors of hallux valgus in Japanese population: HAPPI study.

INTRODUCTION: Hallux valgus (HV) is a common foot deformity characterized by lateral deviation of the great toe. Despite known associations with gender, age, and footwear, the prevalence of HV and its associated risk factors in Japan remain unclear. We conducted the first-ever prospective population-based cohort study (HAPPI study) in Japan to elucidate the prevalence of HV and identify its associated risk factors. METHODS: HAPPI study is a prospective, population-based cohort conducted in Japan from 2020 to 2023. A total of 1499 participants aged 20 and older were included across seven geogr
