Status of Infectious Diseases in Free-Ranging European Brown Hares (Lepus europaeus) Found Dead between 2017 and 2020 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

The European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) is a quite adaptable species, but populations have been decreasing for several decades in different countries, including Germany. To investigate infectious diseases as possible influences on observed population decline in the German federal state Schleswig-Holstein, 118 deceased free-ranging European brown hares were collected between 2017 and 2020 and underwent detailed postmortem examination with extended sampling. Infectious diseases were a major cause of death (34.7%). The number of juveniles found exceeded the adult ones. The main pathomorphologic

Comparative habitat-associated patterns of pathomorphological changes in the internal organs of the European brown hare (Lepus europaeus Pall.).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The European brown hare (Lepus europaeus Pall.) is an ecologically significant game species widely used as a bioindicator of environmental conditions because of its sensitivity to habitat changes and human activities. Pathomorphological changes in internal organs offer valuable insights into the health of wildlife populations and may indicate exposure to various environmental stressors. However, research that evaluates multiple organ systems simultaneously in relation to habitat type within the same spatiotemporal context remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to comp

Fever of unknown origin, muscle weakness, and an adrenal nodule-the cat we chased like a hare: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fever of unknown origin remains a significant clinical challenge in hospitalized patients worldwide. In this report, we describe a case of fever of unknown origin in which the principal radiological finding was an adrenal nodule exhibiting a hyperintense signal on contrast-enhanced T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. While such description is characteristic of pheochromocytoma or malignant adrenal lesions, this report aims to explore alternative diagnostic considerations in light of the clinical context. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old white male Brazilian was admitted to a u

Taxonomic and functional fingerprints in the gut microbiota of Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) inhabiting organic and conventional farming fields.

Intensive farming leading to both landscape homogenization and massive use of pesticides is threatening biodiversity associated with agricultural landscapes. Pesticides may alter the composition of the gut microbiota, which contributes critically to a variety of host metabolic and immune functions, and the consequences on wildlife health are still unknown. We studied potential effects of farming practices on the gut microbiota of wild Iberian hare populations (Lepus granatensis) inhabiting conventional (synthetic pesticide-treated, mostly glyphosate) and organic (synthetic pesticide-free) farm

First detected case of rabbit Haemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2) in the Irish hare (Lepus timidus hibernicus).

BACKGROUND: Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is a Lagovirus, a subgroup of the family Caliciviridae. RHDV2 is a variant first described in France in 2010, and has since spread globally. It has been reported in several Lagomorph species (rabbits, hares, and their relatives) as well as other mammals including voles and shrews. The disease has raised international concerns for its potential impact on population abundance trajectories, particularly as 25% of Lagomorphs are currently Red-Listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Irish hare (Lepus timidus h

The importance of wildlife in the ecology and epidemiology of the TBE virus in Sweden: incidence of human TBE correlates with abundance of deer and hares.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is one tick-transmitted disease where the human incidence has increased in some European regions during the last two decades. We aim to find the most important factors causing the increasing incidence of human TBE in Sweden. Based on a review of published data we presume that certain temperature-related variables and the population densities of transmission hosts, i.e. small mammals, and of primary tick maintenance hosts, i.e. cervids and lagomorphs, of the TBE virus vector Ixodes ricinus, are among the potentially most important factors affecting the

Potent Protease Inhibitors of Highly Pathogenic Lagoviruses: Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus and European Brown Hare Syndrome Virus.

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) and European brown hare syndrome (EBHS) are highly contagious diseases caused by lagoviruses in the Caliciviridae family. These infectious diseases are associated with high mortality and a serious threat to domesticated and wild rabbits and hares, including endangered species such as riparian brush rabbits (Sylvilagus bachmani riparius). In the United States (U.S.), only isolated cases of RHD had been reported until Spring 2020. However, RHD caused by GI.2/rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV)2/b was unexpectedly reported in April 2020 in New Mexico and has s

Francisella Tularensis Clades B.FTN002-00 and B.13 Are Associated With Distinct Pathology in the European Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus).

Tularemia is a severe disease caused by Francisella tularensis This bacterium has a major pathogenic potential in countless animal species as well as in humans. Despite the relatively significant body of literature available on this microorganism, many questions are still open concerning its biological cycle in the environment, the pathology and pathogenesis of the disease, the possible routes of infection in animals, and the pathologic and ecological relevance of the distinct phylogenetic clusters of F. tularensis In order to address these questions, we have thoroughly characterized the patho

In vitro study and comparison of caecal methanogenesis and fermentation pattern in the brown hare (Lepus europaeus) and domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

The brown hare and the domestic rabbit are mid-sized herbivorous mammals and hindgut fermenters, though their digestive physiologies differ in some traits. The objective of this study was to estimate and compare the caecal microbial activity in hares and rabbits via an analysis of the following end-products of in vitro caecal fermentation: methane, total gas production, short chain fatty acids and ammonia concentration. Hare caecal methanogenesis occurred at a much lower level (0.25 mmol/kg for samples incubated without substrate and 0.22 mmol/kg for samples incubated with substrate) than that

Cytotoxicity and glycan-binding profile of a D-galactose-binding lectin from the eggs of a Japanese sea hare (Aplysia kurodai).

A divalent cation-independent 16 kDa D-galactose binding lectin (AKL-2) was isolated from eggs of sea hare, Aplysia kurodai. The lectin recognized D-galactose and D-galacturonic acid and had a 32 kDa dimer consisting of two disulfide-bonded 16 kDa subunits. Eighteen N-terminus amino acids were identified by Edman degradation, having unique primary structure. Lectin blotting analysis with horseradish peroxidase-conjugated lectins has shown that AKL-2 was a glycoprotein with complex type oligosaccharides with N-acetyl D-glucosamine and mannose at non-reducing terminal.
