The military health system: a community of solutions for medical education, health care delivery, and public health.

Multiple strategies have been proposed to improve health care in the United States. These include the development of communities of solution (COSs), implementation of patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs), and lengthening family medicine residency training. There is scant literature on how to build and integrate these ideal models of care, and no literature about how to build a model of care integrating all 3 strategies is available. The Military Health System has adopted the PCMH model and will offer some 4-year family medicine residency positions starting in 2013. Lengthening residency trai

The development of health literacy in patients with a long-term health condition: the health literacy pathway model.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate health literacy has been associated with poor management of long-term health conditions and has been identified as a key social determinant of health outcomes. However, little is understood about how health literacy might develop over time or the processes by which people may become more health literate. Our objectives were to describe how patients with a long-term condition practice health literacy in the management of their health and communication with health professionals, how they become more health literate over time and their experience of using health services. Public Health Nursing as Connective Infrastructure: A Health Policy Perspective on Family Homelessness and Health Equity.

Family homelessness is shaped by social and structural determinants of health, including poverty, housing insecurity, fragmented services, and unequal access to support. Families with infants and young children are particularly vulnerable to the health and developmental effects of housing instability. Public Health Nurses (PHNs) are uniquely positioned at the interface of health services, family life, and community systems. Through universal reach, relational continuity, developmental surveillance, safeguarding, advocacy, and interagency coordination, PHNs help families remain connected to car

Mental health, physical health, and social support in health profession students: a proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Research is limited as to how physical and mental symptoms may relate to emotional social support in health profession students, who often experience social isolation. The ORBIT Model Phase Ia was used to guide this proof-of-concept study. METHODS: Surveys were distributed at two timepoints to preclinical medical, dental, veterinary, and physical therapy students at a health sciences university. Surveys included the Perceived Stress Scale, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire scales for depression and somatization, and the NIH Toolbox: Emotional

Prison health data collection: Transforming prisons from public health risks to opportunities for global health equity.

Despite the health challenges inherent to prison settings and their implications for public health and global health equity, in most countries we know almost nothing about the health status of people deprived of liberty, nor the prison healthcare services in place to respond to their health needs. Over 11 million people are imprisoned globally on any given day, and an estimated 30 million people are released from prisons into the community each year. Prisons concentrate some of the world's most medically and socially vulnerable populations, yet prison healthcare services are typically under-re

[Female migrants in the health care system. Health care utilisation, access barriers and health promotion strategies].

Due to the evident interaction between social factors and health, migrants are exposed to specific risk factors and access barriers to health services. Some examples are the lower education level, the low social position and/or the insufficient language skills. This concept is further elaborated in the multi-factorial impacts of health literacy. Female migrants often experience additional discrimination because of their gender. Despite the lack of representative data, consistent studies show that female migrants do not regularly take advantage of health care prevention and present themselves w

Heat-health action plans overlook Europe's most important health system resource: the health and care workforce.

Europe is warming at more than twice the global average, and heatwaves increasingly coincide with extreme wildfires, rainfall, floods and storms, creating growing health security risks while intensifying an ongoing health and care workforce crisis. Governments across the European Region have scaled-up action to establish heat-health action plans, supported by comprehensive WHO guidance. However, health and care workers remain largely absent from these strategies, which continue to place their focus on protecting populations rather than the workforce responsible for delivering care. Infants Exposed To Homelessness: Health, Health Care Use, And Health Spending From Birth To Age Six.

Homeless infants are known to have poor birth outcomes, but the longitudinal impact of homelessness on health, health care use, and health spending during the early years of life has received little attention. Linking Massachusetts emergency shelter enrollment records for the period 2008-15 with Medicaid claims, we compared 5,762 infants who experienced a homeless episode with a group of 5,553 infants matched on sex, race/ethnicity, location, and birth month. Infants born during a period of unstable housing resulting in homelessness had higher rates of low birthweight, respiratory problems, fe

Impact of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Health Literacy Program on Immigrant Women's Health Literacy, Health Empowerment, Navigation Efficacy, and Health Care Utilization.

We evaluated the effectiveness of a problem-based learning (PBL) health literacy program aimed to improve health literacy, health empowerment, navigation efficacy, and health care utilization among immigrant women in Taiwan. We employed a quasi-experimental design that included surveys at the baseline, immediately after the intervention, and 6 months after the intervention. The intervention group participated in a 10-session PBL health literacy program and the comparison group did not. Results showed that 6 months after the intervention, the intervention group had significantly fewer ER visits

The Impact of Spirituality and Religious Practices on Health and Mental Health.

The Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital sees medical and surgical inpatients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms and conditions. During their twice-weekly rounds, Dr Stern and other members of the Consultation Service discuss diagnosis and management of hospitalized patients with complex medical or surgical problems who also demonstrate psychiatric symptoms or conditions. These discussions have given rise to rounds reports that will prove useful for clinicians practicing at the interface of medicine and psychiatry. Prim Care Companion CNS Disord 2026;28(4):26f0421

Are commercial determinants of health addressed in Australian health policies?

The commercial determinants of health (CDoH) are increasingly recognized as major drivers of non-communicable disease and health inequities. However, the extent to which CDoH concepts are translated into policy action remains unclear. This study examined the extent to which Australian public health and health promotion policies recognize and respond to the CDoH. We conducted a critical qualitative content analysis of 94 Australian Commonwealth, state and territory public health and health promotion policy documents published between 2015 and 2025. Using a theory-informed a priori coding framew

[Mental Health and Desradicalization in Prisons: A Public Health Approach].

The Spanish prison system faces a growing challenge regarding the mental health of inmates, especially those convicted of crimes related to Islamist terrorism. A recent study by the Elcano Royal Institute, based on interviews with twenty-four inmates, has revealed the psychological complexities involved in the reintegration of these prisoners, particularly those who have renounced jihadist ideology. This analysis not only addresses the difficulties in the deradicalization process but also underscores the need for effective mental health strategies that address the emotional and psychological d

Oral Health in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study.

Tobacco use is a well-established risk factor for multiple adverse oral conditions. Few nationally representative oral health data sets encompass the current diversity of tobacco and nicotine products. This investigation examines the validity of oral health measures in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study to assess relationships between tobacco use and oral health. Cross-sectional data from PATH Study wave 4 (N = 33,643 US adults, collected 2016-2018) were used to obtain estimates for 6 self-reported oral conditions (e.g., bone loss around teeth, tooth extractions) and
