Photo-Cross-Linked and Photothermal Flammulina velutipes Polysaccharide Hydrogel Loaded with Caffeic Acid-Copper Nanozyme for Diabetic Wound Healing.

Diabetic ulcers remain a persistent global health challenge. Developing therapeutic systems with antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pro-angiogenic properties presents a promising strategy for effectively and rapidly treating diabetic wounds and preventing the development of diabetic ulcers. Herein, a photo-cross-linked Flammulina velutipes polysaccharide (FVP) containing double bonds was obtained through extraction and purification of FVP, and a facile reaction using methacrylic anhydride. The FVP was further combined with caffeic acid-copper nanozyme (CCN) to fabricate a serie

Families in the COVID-19 pandemic: parental stress, parent mental health and the occurrence of adverse childhood experiences-results of a representative survey in Germany.

Parenting during the COVID-19 pandemic is highly challenging, with parents having to meet various demands simultaneously. An increase in adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) has been widely predicted, but empirical evidence is still scarce. This study aimed to (1) generate representative data on pandemic-related stress, parental stress, general stress, parental subjective and mental health, and the occurrence of ACEs; (2) identify risk factors for an increase in ACEs, and (3) provide qualitative data on parents' experiences. A representative survey was conducted in Germany in August 2020 with

Low frequency of SARS-CoV2 infection in daycare centers during the reopening of school activities in the Southeast's poor area of Brazil.

SARS-Cov2 has already infected over 482 million people and caused more than 6.1 million deaths. The beginning of the pandemic has led the health authorities of several countries to adopt non-pharmacological preventive measures such as daycare closures. The reopening took place when the country had the highest rates of infection and mortality (mainly due to the gamma variant (P.1) outbreak) and the beginning of the vaccination program. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of SARS-CoV2 in daycare after educational activities resumed. The study was conducted in seven childcare facili

Can real-time polymerase chain reaction allow a faster recovery of hospital activity in cases of an incidental discovery of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci carriers?

BACKGROUND: Detection of faecal carriers of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) has become a routine medical practice in many countries. In an outbreak setting, several public health organizations recommend three-weekly rectal screenings to rule-out acquisition in contact patients. This strategy, associated with bed closures and reduction of medical activity for a relatively long time, seems costly. AIM: The objective of this study was to test the positive and negative predictive values of reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction

Maintaining HIV testing and treatment services in Zambia during COVID-19: a story of success and resilience.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by a virus called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus. As countries struggled to control the spread of the virus through among other measures closure of health facilities, repurposing of health care workers, and restrictions on people's movement, HIV service delivery was affected. OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of COVID-19 on HIV service delivery in Zambia by comparing uptake of HIV services before and during COVID-19. METHODS: We used repeated cross-sectional quarterly and monthly data on HIV testing, HIV positivity rate,

Sexual abuse and unwanted pregnancies amongst women and girls in Malawi during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Violence against women and girls increased during the COVID-19 pandemic across the globe. This study investigates the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to sexual abuse towards women and girls in Malawi and explores if there was an association between reported cases of sexual abuse (rape and defilement) and the number of women and girls accessing post-abortion care services across Malawi's four administrative regions: Northern, Central, Eastern, and Southern. METHODS: The study employed an explanatory mixed-methods approach. Administrative data from 2018 to 2021 on

Sudan's healthcare crisis: The struggle of kidney patients amidst conflict.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Conflicts, akin to other crises, disrupt lives and healthcare infrastructure, disproportionately affecting vulnerable individuals. The ongoing Sudanese conflict, initiated on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Force (RSF), triggers significant population displacement, healthcare facility closures, and a scarcity of medical resources. Amid the intense conflict in Khartoum, reports of deceased individuals in the streets heighten concerns about public health, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. This crisis compounds the challeng

Primary shortening with secondary limb lengthening for Gustilo IIIB open tibial fractures: a report of six cases.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of type IIIB open tibial fractures remains a challenge for orthopedic surgeons, particularly with respect to the soft-tissue and subsequent bony reconstruction. The primary shortening and limb lengthening (PSLL) simplifies wound closure for severe open injuries without requiring microsurgical procedures as a main advantage. This method is thought to be also useful for type IIIB patients with polytrauma and other life-threatening injuries because it helps to control both wound sepsis and their general state. In the present study, we attempted to assess the problems, lo

Tropical Myositis: A Not-So-Tropical Diagnosis in a Febrile Type 1 Diabetic Patient.

INTRODUCTION: Tropical myositis - also known as pyomyositis - is a subacute, primary infection of skeletal muscle. Long considered a diagnosis exclusive to tropical climates, recently it has been reported increasingly in historically nontropical climates. We present a case of tropical myositis in Madison, Wisconsin, occurring in a febrile type 1 diabetic patient without travel or known exposure. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old male with a history of von Willebrand disease, type 1 diabetes, and financial insecurity resulting in insulin rationing presented with 2 weeks of generalized weakness.

Reduced IV fluid use and operational effects among emergency department patients during a national shortage.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous (IV) fluids are an essential therapeutic in emergency care, frequently administered for a wide range of acute conditions. In September 2024, Hurricane Helene forced the closure of a major U.S. IV fluid manufacturing facility, triggering a nationwide shortage. While many health systems rapidly implemented conservation strategies, the downstream operational and clinical effects of reduced IV fluid allocations on emergency department (ED) care remain unknown. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of discharged ED encounters from nine hospitals within a regional h

Living through the war in Gaza: An autoethnographic account of psychological, humanitarian, and physical suffering of Gaza's inhabitants during the war in Gaza.

INTRODUCTION: This paper presents an autoethnography from a Gaza-based scholar who documents, in real time, the war's effects on himself and his family. It situates a personal trajectory-bombardments, repeated displacement, injury, bereavement, and the collapse of essential services-within the broader humanitarian emergency, arguing that first-person evidence is indispensable to grasp lived experience and cumulative harm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using an autoethnographic case-study design, the author combines contemporaneous field notes, direct observations across hospitals and shelters, and f

What Was the Change in Telehealth Usage and Proportion of No-show Visits for an Orthopaedic Trauma Clinic During the COVID-19 Pandemic?

BACKGROUND: In response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services pledged payment for telehealth visits for the duration of this public health emergency in an effort to decrease COVID-19 transmission and allow for deployment of residents and attending physicians to support critical-care services. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has vastly expanded telehealth use, no studies to our knowledge have analyzed the implementation and success of telehealth for orthopaedic trauma. This population is unique in that patients who have experienced or

Qualitative exploration of the early experiences of opioid use disorder patients from private clinics after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in five major cities in Ukraine.

INTRODUCTION: Following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation on 24 February 2022, over 6,000 patients were at risk of potential disruptions in treatment with medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in Ukraine. Before 2022, privatized MOUD clinics had emerged, partly driven by restrictive governmental policies and practices in state-funded facilities. Nevertheless, scant information exists regarding their operation and the patient's experiences, especially during crises. This study seeks to elucidate the initial lived experiences of patients utilizing private MOUD cli

Long-term monitoring of drug consumption patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic in a small-sized community in Brazil through wastewater-based epidemiology.

The abuse of legal and illegal drugs is a global public health problem, also affecting the social and economic well-being of the population. Thus, there is a significant interest in monitoring drug consumption. Relevant epidemiological information on lifestyle habits can be obtained from the chemical analysis of urban wastewater. In this work, passive sampling using polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) was used to quantify licit and illicit drugs biomarkers in wastewater for the application of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE). In this WBE study, a small urban community of app

Challenges, constraints and failures that are related to the posterior sagittal anorectoplasty approach to anorectal malformations in a low-resource context: An experience from a sudanese tertiary referral centre.

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations (ARMs) in the sub-Saharan Africa are a common cause of neonatal referral for intestinal obstruction, and the posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) approach is rapidly spreading. The small number of paediatric surgeons and the low-resource context limit children's access to care and constrain the quality of results. A retrospective, observational study has been done on a consecutive series of ARM cases admitted to a Sudanese tertiary paediatric surgical centre within the framework of a partnership between Italian and Sudanese academic institutions address
