Surgical anatomy of upper arm: what is needed for AVF planning.

The majority of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have anatomy suitable for arteriovenous fistula creation. Clinical examination supplemented with duplex Doppler vessel mapping plays a crucial role in evaluation of the anatomy to plan dialysis access in a given patient. Access planning should take into consideration the overall health status and longevity of the ESRD patient on dialysis and potential for the access failure. Accordingly, access planning should involve not only a plan for the initial procedure, but include an algorithm to provide an access sequence to support the pati

The association between perceived 15-minute fitness circle accessibility and physical activity in China: the mediating role of informal social support.

BACKGROUND: Differences in physical activity levels partly reflect structural inequalities in access to health opportunities. According to the socio-ecological model theory, physical activity is influenced by multiple factors across individual characteristics, interpersonal relationships, community environments, and policy systems. Among these, the spatial distribution of fitness facilities, as a key component of urban planning, potential to reshape the allocation of community level and thus offers a novel pathway to alleviate health inequities. In recent years, the Chinese government has acti

Surprising success in Kenya's FP programme.

Mrs. Margaret Gachara, Deputy Director of the Ministry's Family Health Division, explained that the strengths and weaknesses of the program have recently been examined using a new operations research approach, known as situation analysis. "If family planning was not working in Kenya, we had to know why in order to decide what to do about it. We began the study to find out where our weaknesses lay. To our surprise, we found that we were not weak, but moderately successful," she said. The Kenya Situation Analysis Study, conducted by the Health Ministry and the Population Council, revealed that c

Breastfeeding Support and Protection During Natural Disaster and Climate-Related Emergencies in Indonesia: Policy Audit.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia is a middle-income country in Southeast Asia in which 2,394 disasters were recorded in 2022 alone, with a total loss of 178,367 lives. In 2018 governments at the World Health Assembly resolved to improve emergency planning using Operational Guidance on Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (OG IFE). Little is known about whether Indonesian policies protect the health and lives of women, infants, and young children in line with OG IFE through planning for breastfeeding support and protection during emergencies. RESEARCH AIM: To identify and audit Indonesian policy

Rare childhood diseases: how should we respond?

Paradoxically, rare diseases are common, collectively affecting 6-10% of the population and have a huge impact on patients and families, health services, clinicians and the wider community. Accurate data are required to inform clinical practice, government policy and health service planning. We recommend a national approach, similar to that adopted in the USA and Europe, to support research and promote advocacy and equitable access to services for children with rare diseases.

[Women's experiences with a pregnancy relapse prevention plan to prevent mental health symptom relaps].

BACKGROUND: For women with a known psychiatric disorder, the perinatal period carries an increased risk of mental health relapse. Drawing up and using a signal plan for pregnancy and the postpartum period (SPPP) can be an important intervention. AIM: Pregnant women with a mental health diagnosis have an increased risk of relapse and are at risk for the development of postpartum psychopathology. During this period a pregnancy relapse prevention plan (PRPP) can be made that describes the risks, symptoms of relapse and related interventions. The main goal of this study is to describe the lived e

Extending the boundaries of care: Collaboratively planning connections between rehabilitation and community resources for chronic pain self-management.

BACKGROUND: Linkages (i.e. partnerships or referral pathways) between chronic pain management services and community resources can strengthen the continuum of care and address unmet needs, although implementing these connections is challenging. AIMS: The aim of this study was to conduct exploratory, strategic planning to inform linkages between pain self-management within multidisciplinary rehabilitation and community resources that support the quality of life of individuals with chronic pain. METHODS: Using a participatory design, the deliberative dialogue methodology actively engaged indiv

A Canadian national study of provincial and territorial correctional workers' suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts.

Correctional workers (CWs) endure several operational stressors (e.g., exposures to potentially psychologically traumatic events) and organisational stressors (e.g., shift work, staff shortages), which are associated with positive screens for mental disorders and self-reports of suicidal behaviours and thus urgently warrant further inquiry. The Canadian Provincial and Territorial Correctional Worker Mental Health and Well-Being Study (CWMH) used an online survey to collect data from Canadian correctional service organisations across all 13 provinces and territories. This national Canadian stud

Recovery-Oriented Care Planning in Mental Healthcare Services: A Combined Concept Analysis and Scoping Review.

Recovery-oriented care planning is increasingly promoted within international mental health policy and practice; however, the concept remains inconsistently defined and operationalised across the literature. This study aimed to clarify the concept of recovery-oriented care planning using Walker and Avant's concept analysis method alongside a scoping review. Literature was systematically searched across six electronic databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ProQuest One Academic and Scopus. Data were analysed across 28 included papers to identify antecedents, defining attributes, conseque

Predictors of HIV-related risk perception and PrEP acceptability among young adult female family planning patients.

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) presents new opportunities for HIV prevention. While women comprise approximately 20% of new HIV infections in the US, significant questions remain about how to most effectively facilitate PrEP uptake for this population. Family planning clinics are a dominant source of health care for young women and support an estimated 4.5 million women annually. We explore characteristics associated with HIV risk perception and PrEP acceptability among young adult women seeking reproductive health services in a high-prevalence setting. A cross-sectional, clinic-based sur

The behavior of Italian family physicians regarding the health problems of women and, in particular, family planning (both contraception and NFP).

The hospital-centered trend that has dominated medical culture and the management of health care during this entire century has, in the last few years, undergone a reversal in Italy. Conditions in other countries suggest that similar changes have or will become increasingly common. The family physician today manages many of the functions previously handled by hospitals and specialists. In the field of reproductive health, family physicians are responsible not only for diagnosis and treatment, but also for prevention and education. The present study considers this new context with the objective

Urban gentrification and declining access to HIV/STI, sexual health, and outreach services amongst women sex workers between 2010-2014: Results of a community-based longitudinal cohort.

Despite increasing gentrification across North American cities, little is known about impacts on work and living environments and health access for marginalized women. Drawing upon prospective cohort and external spatial data, we examined changes in land use and sex workers' work/living environments in relation to gentrification exposure in Metro Vancouver (2010-2014), and modeled independent effects of gentrification exposure on reduced utilization of HIV/STI testing, sexual health, and sex worker support services. These decreases occurred despite efforts to scale-up HIV services for marginal

Personalised care planning for adults with chronic or long-term health conditions.

BACKGROUND: Personalised care planning is a collaborative process used in chronic condition management in which patients and clinicians identify and discuss problems caused by or related to the patient's condition, and develop a plan for tackling these. In essence it is a conversation, or series of conversations, in which they jointly agree goals and actions for managing the patient's condition. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of personalised care planning for adults with long-term health conditions compared to usual care (i.e. forms of care in which active involvement of patients in treatm

Barriers to effective family planning in Nepal.

To investigate why family planning (FP) services in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal are underused, a study was initiated under the auspices of the Nepal Family Planning/Maternal--Child Health Project. The study was intended to provide a user perspective, by examining interactions between FP clinic staff and their clientele. "Simulated" clients were sent to 16 FP clinics in Kathmandu to request information and advice. The study revealed that in the impersonal setting of a family planning clinic, clients and staff fall into traditional, hierarchical modes of interaction. In the process, the client

Hospital noise pollution: an environmental stress model to guide research and clinical interventions This commentary provides an expanded environmental stress model. Conceptual relationships between ambient stressors, ambient stress, and health are detailed. A three-part intervention, enhancement of person-environment compatibility, is specified. Details are provided on how this approach to reducing environmental pollution/hazards and sustaining these changes may be influenced by sociopolitical values, technological advances, and motivation for control over hazards. From design to action: participatory approach to capacity building needs for local overdose response plans.

BACKGROUND: In response to the rise in opioid-related deaths, communities across Ontario have developed opioid or overdose response plans to address issues at the local level. Public Health Ontario (PHO) leads the Community Opioid / Overdose Capacity Building (COM-CAP) project, which aims to reduce overdose-related harms at the community level by working with communities to identify, develop, and evaluate capacity building supports for local needs around overdose planning. The 'From Design to Action' co-design workshop used a participatory design approach to engage communities in identifying t
