Online scan of FASD prevention and health promotion resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) includes a range of life-long impairments caused by alcohol exposure in utero. Health professionals are vital to preventing FASD but many are hesitant to discuss FASD with clients due to their need for additional resources to aid the conversation. This scan sought to identify the scope and gaps in publicly available FASD prevention and health promotion resources, and assess their cultural appropriateness for use among five key groups of Indigenous Australian people including: (i) pregnant women, (ii) women of childbearing age, (iii) gran

Assessing the potential impact of limited public health resources on the spread and control of typhoid.

Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi and occurs predominantly in association with poor sanitation and lack of clean drinking water. Despite recent progress in water and sanitation coverage, the disease remains a substantial public health problem in many developing countries. A mathematical model for the spread of typhoid has been formulated using non linear ordinary differential equations. The model includes a special treatment function to assess the effects of limited treatment resources on the spread of typhoid. It is shown that the model has multiple equilibria a

Intimate partner violence, depression, PTSD, and use of mental health resources among ethnically diverse black women.

This study examined exposure to violence and risk for lethality in intimate partner relationships as factors related to co-occurring MH problems and use of mental health (MH) resources among women of African descent. Black women with intimate partner violence (IPV) experiences (n = 431) were recruited from primary care, prenatal or family planning clinics in the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Severity of IPV was significantly associated with co-occurring MH problems, but was not associated with the use of MH resources among African-American women. Risk for lethality and co-occurrin

Analytical resources for assessment of clinical genetics services in public health: current status and future prospects.

CONTEXT: Genetics services are not well integrated into the public health programs of most states, nor has there been effective use of clinical and program databases in the design, evaluation, and monitoring of public health genetics services at the state level. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the availability and current use of population-based clinical genetics databases, including birth defects surveillance programs, in state-level public health genetics programs. DESIGN: Mail survey to state genetics coordinators in 50 states and 3 territories during 1996 with an update in 1997. RESULTS: Thirty

Exploring and enhancing the accessibility of children's oral health resources (called HABIT) for high risk communities.

BACKGROUND: Within the city of Bradford in West Yorkshire, South Asian and Eastern European communities have an increased risk of childhood tooth decay, especially among families with Limited English Proficiency. Tooth decay is preventable, with national guidelines advocating home-based behaviours (toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste and reducing sugar intake). In England, Health Visitors have opportunities to undertake oral health conversations during universal visits for children aged 0-24 months. The HABIT (Health visitors delivering Advice in Britain on Infant Toothbrushing) interventio

Nitrate contamination in water resources, human health risks and its remediation through adsorption: a focused review.

The level of nitrate in water has been increasing considerably all around the world due to vast application of inorganic nitrogen fertiliser and animal manure. Because of nitrate's high solubility in water, human beings are getting exposed to it mainly through various routes including water, food etc. Various regulations have been set for nitrate (45-50 mgNO3-/L) in drinking water to protect health of the infants from the methemoglobinemia, birth defects, thyroid disease, risk of specific cancers, i.e. colorectal, breast and bladder cancer caused due to nitrate poisoning. Different methods lik

Digital health maturity models for Human Resources for Health Information Systems in low- and middle-income countries in Africa: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Health workforce challenges in Africa are exacerbated by fragmented and underdeveloped Human Resources for Health Information Systems (HRH-IS). While digital health maturity models exist, their applicability to HRH-IS in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains unclear, with limited evidence of context-specific frameworks. AIM: This scoping review aimed to (1) map digital health and health information system (HIS) maturity models, frameworks, tools and guidelines relevant to HRH-IS, and (2) synthesise key domains to inform the development of a context-appropriate HRH-IS ma

Resources and interventions to support psychological health and wellbeing in the pharmacy workforce: Analysis and use of a health worker 'burnout' toolkit.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacists have experienced declines in psychological health and wellbeing post-pandemic. The phenomena of moral distress, disengagement and burnout are associated with workforce attrition, unfitness to practice and inferior quality of patient care. A working group of the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) was formed to identify resources and interventions (R&I) for occupational psychological health and wellbeing. OBJECTIVE: To characterize R&I from an evidence-based national health worker 'burnout' Toolkit with potential to support the pharmacy workforce. METHODS: All R&I
