Small countries face specific challenges in health workforce sustainability, but policy responses are a testbed for resilience for all countries.

While countries across Europe are facing challenges in building and sustaining a health workforce, small countries (official population of under 2 million people) face specific challenges that go beyond resource constraint. Limited population size constrains training capacity, specialist care provision, and career development opportunities, making these systems highly vulnerable to workforce shortages. Experiences in Cyprus, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, and the Caribbean Netherlands illustrate these dynamics. Cyprus and Luxembourg have expanded in-country medical education and postgraduate tra

Effectively Training the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Physician Workforce for Improved End-of-Life Health Care in the United States

The widening gap between the demand for palliative care services and the supply of trained palliative care professionals has resulted in considerable end-of-life distress for patients. Without formal training in palliative medicine and end-of-life symptom management, physicians in the United States are less equipped to competently address seriously ill and dying patients' medical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Recent attempts within graduate medical education training deliberately seek to prepare a critical mass of physicians as the new hospice and palliative medicine workforce in the United

Exploring the Implications of Aged Care Reform on Allied Health Workforce and Capacity to Deliver Palliative and End-of-Life Care.

Background: The aged care sector in Australia is increasingly focused on a personalised care approach which prioritises dignity and respect for older adults. With a growing ageing population, we are also seeing more complexity in health needs and palliative care. Allied health professionals are skilled in the delivery of care that fosters independence and quality of life as health deteriorates. However, in the recent aged care reform, there has been concern that allied health are not clearly recognised for their role in aged and palliative care. Methods: Qualitative study using semi-structured

Health impacts of exposure to second hand smoke (SHS) amongst a highly exposed workforce: survey of London casino workers.

BACKGROUND: Casino workers are exposed to high levels of secondhand smoke (SHS) at work, yet remain at risk of being excluded from smoke-free legislation around the world. If the prime motivation for smoke-free legislation is the protection of workers, then a workforce experiencing ill-health associated with SHS exposure should not be excluded from legislation. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of respiratory and sensory irritation symptoms among a sample of casino workers, to identify any association between the reporting of symptoms and exposure to SHS at work, and to compare the

Addressing Health Disparities: How Having a More Diverse Biomedical Workforce Can Contribute to Addressing Health Disparities in Communities that Are Often Underrepresented in the Healthcare System.

Health disparities that are seen in underserved and underrepresented communities are a pressing issue in healthcare. These disparities are embedded into our society through structural inequalities that lead to poorer health outcomes in those from minoritised communities. In its place as the heart of modern healthcare, the biomedical science workforce has the potential to play a crucial role in mitigating these disparities by fostering greater cultural competence, improving patient outcomes and driving innovative solutions. This study reviewed the current literature on the impact of diversity w
