[Fetal heart rate patterns at death in utero (author's transl)].

In a comparative description of norm- and anencephal fetus typical heart rate patterns at death in utero are demonstrated and the imminent danger is described by 5 characteristic parameters. As several figures show heart rate patterns are not influenced by fetal deformation and immaturity. The sinusoidal oscillation is not imparative in prefinal stage.

Fetal heart rate patterns in patients with intrauterine growth retardation.

Fetal heart rate recordings were examined in 953 patients with special reference to the different patterns occurring during labor. After delivery the infants were examined with special emphasis on evidence of growth retardation, defined as birthweight below the 10th percentile for the gestational age. Heart rate patterns of growth-retarded infants were compared with those of normal newborns. A statistically significant increase in early, late, and variable decelerations was noted in infants with growth retardation. The difference in loss of beat-to-beat variation was not statistically signific

Two cases of continuous fetal heart rate monitoring in twins.

This report describes two cases of twin pregnancy in which continuous heart rate monitoring of both twins was successfully carried out during labour. In both cases monitoring permitted early diagnosis of fetal distress and both mothers were delivered by caesarean section. Continuous fetal heart rate monitoring permits diagnosis of fetal distress in the second twin much earlier than conventional methods.

Fetal heart and surroundings: umbilical cord traction triggers sympathetic heart rate surge in fetal lambs in the artificial womb.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether umbilical cord traction triggers a unique umbilico-neuro-cardio reflex via sympathetic autonomic nervous system (ANS) activation, potentially explaining fetal heart rate (FHR) increases such as the double mountain peak sign and unexplained tachycardia outside labor. DESIGN: Experimental physiological study using the EXTrauterine Environment for Neonatal Development (EXTEND) system. SETTING: Controlled laboratory environment at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with fetal lambs supported by the EXTEND system. POPULATION OR SAMPLE: Twenty-nine experimen

Simultaneous antepartum testing of twin fetal heart rates.

Assessment of twin gestation in the antepartum period has been a problem because most methods either fail to distinguish twins individually or require serial study over several weeks before reaching diagnostic end points. Electronic monitoring of the fetal heart rate (FHR) allows individual focus on each twin with a high degree of specificity and permits immediate status evaluation. In this study 44 sets of twins had simultaneous Doppler monitoring in an outpatient testing center. Transducer position was aided by real-time ultrasonic location of each fetal heart; 198 tests were satisfactory, e

Heart rate markers for prediction of fetal acidosis in an experimental study on fetal sheep.

To overcome the difficulties in interpreting fetal heart rate (FHR), several tools based on the autonomic nervous system and heart rate variability (HRV) have been developed. The objective of this study was to use FHR and HRV parameters for the prediction of fetal hypoxia. It was an experimental study in the instrumented fetal sheep. Repeated umbilical cord occlusions were performed to achieve severe acidosis. Hemodynamic parameters, ECG, and blood gases were analyzed. The variables used were heart rate baseline, HRV analysis (RMSSD, SDNN, LF, HF, HFnu, Fetal Stress Index (FSI), …), and morpho

Intrauterine fetal death during COVID-19 pregnancy: Typical fetal heart rate changes, coagulopathy, and placentitis.

Although various perinatal outcomes in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pregnancies have been reported, the fetal and neonatal consequences of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection remain unclear. Several reports of miscarriages and stillbirths have been recorded, but vertical transmission by SARS-CoV-2 is considered very rare, and the cause remains unknown. We report a case of a 22-year-old uncomplicated Japanese woman infected with SARS-CoV-2 during the second trimester, resulting in intrauterine fetal death due to placental insufficiency associated with C

iPREFACE score: Integrated score index to predict fetal acidemia by intrapartum fetal heart rate monitoring.

AIM: Cardiotocography is used worldwide to evaluate fetal well-being during pregnancy and labor. In past guidelines, the management plan was determined based on the assessment of the most severe waveform. There are no guidelines for evaluating the integrated recurrent decelerations; however, we believe their assessment to be essential for predicting the status of the fetus. The objective of this study was to propose an indicator for performing medical interventions during labor by creating a scoring system that reflects integrated recurrent decelerations. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort

Normalized spectral power of fetal heart rate variability is associated with fetal scalp blood pH.

BACKGROUND: Spectral power of fetal heart rate variability is related to fetal condition. Previous studies found an increased normalized low frequency power in case of severe fetal acidosis. AIMS: To analyze whether absolute or normalized low or high frequency power of fetal heart rate variability is associated with fetal scalp blood pH. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study, performed in an obstetric unit of a tertiary care teaching hospital. SUBJECTS: Consecutive singleton term fetuses in cephalic presentation that underwent one or more scalp blood samples, monitored during labour using

Fetal heart rate response to acoustic stimulation in relation to fetal development and hearing impairment.

In twelve healthy pregnant women the fetal heart rate response to sound stimulation was tested every second week between the 22nd and the 34th week of the pregnancy. Habituation to the acoustic stimuli used was also investigated at the last examination. A high risk material for hearing impairment comprised 31 pregnant women. The stimuli were presented by a vibrator placed on the maternal abdomen over the fetal head. As stimuli pure tones were used in the form of pulses of one second at a frequency of 3000 Hz and with an onset and a decay time chosen not to cause audible clicks to a normal ear.

Computerized analysis of fetal heart rate variation in postterm pregnancy: prediction of intrapartum fetal distress and fetal acidosis.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to evaluate whether computerized analysis of fetal heart rate variation may improve fetal surveillance in postterm pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: Three hundred thirty-seven pregnant women who were delivered after 41 weeks' gestation and who had 610 antenatal tests were included in this study. Fetal tests included a nonstress test with a computerized analysis of the fetal heart rate, Doppler examination of the umbilical artery, and a biophysical profile, performed every 2 to 4 days. Induction of labor was performed when the fetal heart rate variation was reduced (< 30 msec

Prenatal maternal distress and fetal heart rate: Examining sex-specific sensitivity.

Fetal heart rate is linked to fetal well-being and later neurodevelopmental outcomes. Prenatal maternal psychological distress may influence fetal heart rate through physiological changes in utero. However, few studies have examined how maternal distress relates to fetal heart rate, or whether these associations differ by fetal sex. We hypothesized that prenatal maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms and emotion dysregulation would associate with higher fetal heart rate and lower variability, with stronger effects among males. Participants were 159 third-trimester mothers, with a range of sc

Effects of low maternal heart rate on fetal growth and birthweight.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between birthweight and maternal heart rate (MHR) or heart rate variability (HRV) under resting conditions at 20-24 gestational weeks and 34 weeks or later (34+ weeks). METHODS: Data were retrospectively reviewed from the Safe Passage Study, a prospective longitudinal cohort study of alcohol use in pregnancy and birth outcomes in Cape Town, South Africa, between August 2007 and January 2015. Using custom-designed software, MHR and indicators of HRV were obtained from the recorded maternal electrocardiograms and compared with birthweight and z-scores of b
