Neurotoxicity of Vanadium.

Vanadium (V) is a transition metal that presents in multiple oxidation states and numerous inorganic compounds and is also an ultra-trace element considered to be essential for most living organisms. Despite being one of the lightest metals, V offers high structural strength and good corrosion resistance and thus has been widely adopted for high-strength steel manufacturing. High doses of V exposure are toxic, and inhalation exposure to V adversely affects the respiratory system. The neurotoxicological properties of V are just beginning to be identified. Recent studies by our group and others

Case Report: Acute kidney injury from chromium exposure-clinical insights.

This article reports a case of a patient who developed nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, succeeded by oliguria and acute kidney injury, after exposure to a chromium-containing additive pool water while working. The patient was diagnosed with acute kidney injury, third-degree skin burns, and gastroenteritis. Subsequently, the patient was treated with antioxidant stress management, hemodialysis, and surgical debridement with skin grafting. After 1 year, the patient's condition gradually improved. In addition, renal biopsy pathology suggested acute interstitial nephritis. In combination, with the m

Health risks assessment and source admeasurement of potentially dangerous heavy metals (Cu, Fe, and Ni) in rapidly growing urban settlement.

Environmental contamination is a global challenge that impacts every aspect of ecosystem. The contaminants from anthropogenic or industrial trash continually recirculate into the environment, agricultural land, plants, livestock, and ultimately into humans by way of the food chain. After an increase in human and farmland animal deaths from illnesses due to contaminated drinking water, toxic metal water poisoning has remained a global concern. Diverse environmental and enforcement organisations have attempted to regulate the activities that serve as precursors to these heavy metals which have b

Severe Lead Poisoning Managed with Combination Chelation Therapy: Report from a Resource-limited Country.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of cases of lead toxicity are being reported among patients taking Ayurvedic and other alternative medicines. These medicines may have varying amounts of heavy metals, making the diagnosis confusing and treatment challenging. The unavailability of certain chelating agents in resource-poor settings limits therapeutic options. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 38-year-old, recently diagnosed diabetic male, presented with complaints of vomiting, abdominal pain, and constipation. There was a history of consumption of Ayurvedic medications and other herbal supplements for the pa

Mercury poisoning in a patient with thrombotic events: A case report.

Mercury poisoning is an underdiagnosed condition in our setting. It affects multiple organs and systems, often presenting with variable and nonspecific symptoms that may mimic more common diseases. We report the case of a 42-year-old female patient who presented with multiple arterial and venous thrombotic events, cardiovascular complications, progressive cognitive impairment, and long-standing renal dysfunction. Imaging studies revealed embolic phenomena characterized by hyperdense material suggestive of metallic emboli in the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis, raising suspicion of heavy metal pois

Level of neurotoxic metals in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A population-based case-control study.

The association between exposure to toxic metals and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was explored in a population-based case-control study in the Sardinia island (Italy), a region characterized by elevated rates of ALS cases. In 34 patients with ALS (mean age, 62 ± 10 years) and 30 controls (mean age, 65 ± 11 years), Al, Cd, Hg, Mn and Pb were determined in blood, hair and urine by sector field inductively coupled mass spectrometry. Results indicated that, in blood, concentrations of Al (p=0.045) and Pb were higher (p=0.026) in ALS patients than in control subjects. In hair, a depletion of

Pb exposure triggers MAPK-dependent inflammation by activating oxidative stress and miRNA-155 expression in carp head kidney.

Lead (Pb) is a toxic heavy metal and an aquatic pollutant. Various amounts of heavy metals are released into the environment through industrial discharge, causing excessive contamination of aquatic ecosystems. The head kidney is a unique immune organ of the bony fish and plays an important role in the metabolism of heavy metals. Studies of toxic Pb exposure that have investigated the head kidney of carp are limited. This study was carried out to explore the potential immunotoxicity effects of Pb and the specific related mechanisms in the carp head kidney. Pb poisoning was shown to induce the p

Detoxification effect of sodium thiosulfate on cadmium poisoning in Litopenaeus vannamei and the mechanisms of intestinal flora regulation.

Cadmium (Cd) is currently one of the heavy metals with the highest environmental toxicity impact. Sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) is a commonly used heavy metal detoxification drug in clinical practice, however, it has not been used for Cd detoxification of Litopenaeus vannamei. The present study used exposure of L. vannamei to 150 μg/L of Cd while mitigating in the addition of 75 μg/L of Na2S2O3 for 28 days. The goal was to study the detoxifying effect of Na2S2O3 on L. vannamei poisoning and its role in intestinal flora. The results showed that the growth of Cd group was inhibited, and the growt

Poisoning in children: Indian scenario.

The retrospective data on childhood poisoning from eight regional hospitals in India has been reviewed. The demographic features and types of poisonings encountered have been compared. The analysis of the data indicated that pediatric poisonings constituted 0.23-3.3% of the total poisoning. The mortality ranged from 0.64-11.6% with highest being from Shimla. Accidental poisoning was common involving 50-90% of children below 5 years of age and males outnumbered the females. Suicidal poisoning was seen after 13 years of age and was due to drugs and household chemicals. One of the hospitals in De

Drug conjugation in clinical toxicology.

Conjugation is an important mechanism for the rapid inactivation and extensive removal of drugs and poisons from the body, and as such it is of major significance in clinical toxicology. The capacity for conjugation of some drugs is large, but with others, saturation may occur with overdosage or even high therapeutic doses. Glutathione conjugation is an important mechanism of protection against toxicity produced by heavy metals, alkylating agents and some compounds which undergo metabolic activation.

Neurodegeneration Induced by Metals in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Metals are a component of a variety of ecosystems and organisms. They can generally be divided into essential and nonessential metals. The essential metals are involved in physiological processes once the deficiency of these metals has been associated with diseases. Although iron, manganese, copper, and zinc are important for life, it has been evidenced that they are also involved in neuronal damage in many neurodegenerative disorders. Nonessential metals, which are metals without physiological functions, are present in trace or higher levels in living organisms. Occupational, environmental, o

Thallium: a review of public health and environmental concerns.

Thallium (Tl) is a rare but widely dispersed element. All forms of thallium are soluble enough to be toxic to living organisms. Thallium is more toxic to humans than mercury, cadmium, lead, copper or zinc and has been responsible for many accidental, occupational, deliberate, and therapeutic poisonings since its discovery in 1861. Its chemical behavior resembles the heavy metals (lead, gold and silver) on the one hand and the alkali metals (K, Rb, Cs) on the other. It occurs almost exclusively in natural waters as monovalent thallous cation. The solubility of thallous compounds is relatively h

Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) mono-esters and amides: synthesis and application in treating metal induced drug resistance in lung cancer.

Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) mono-esters have been shown to be powerful chelators that are capable of heavy metal removal across a variety of biological applications. Whilst the utility of this class of chelator is widely reported in acute heavy metal poisoning the ability to access a wide variety of derivatives has been a synthetic challenge often relying on the use of statistical mixtures governed by stoichiometry. In this report we detail a robust four-step synthetic route starting from commercially available acetylenedicarboxylic acid that can generate both dimercaptosuccinic acid mono-e

Evaluation of cytoprotective effects of compounds isolated from Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. against induced cytotoxicity by exposure to methylmercury and lead.

Copaifera langsdorffii L. is one of the most known medicinal species in Brazil. Its leaves are rich in phenolic compounds with potential biological activities as an antioxidant and chelating agent. This paper reports the isolation of four compounds from the hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves of C. langsdorffii and the investigation of their possible cytoprotective effects against heavy metal poisoning. Quercitrin (1), afzelin (2), 3,5-di-O-(3-O-methyl galloyl) quinic acid (3) and 4,5-di-O-(3-O-methyl galloyl) quinic acid (4), were associated with toxic doses of methylmercury and lead and eva

Histological and Chemical Analysis of Heavy Metals in Kidney and Gills of Boops boops: Melanomacrophages Centers and Rodlet Cells as Environmental Biomarkers.

Industrialization has resulted in a massive increase in garbage output, which is frequently discharged or stored in waterways like rivers and seas. Due to their toxicity, durability, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification, heavy metals (such as mercury, cadmium, and lead) have been identified as strong biological poisons. Their presence in the aquatic environment has the potential to affect water quality parameters and aquatic life in general. Teleosts' histopathology provides a sensitive indicator of pollutant-induced stress, because their organs have a central role in the transformation of di

Metals and Paraoxonases.

The paraoxonases (PONs) are a three-gene family which includes PON1, PON2, and PON3. PON1 and PON3 are synthesized primarily in the liver and a portion is secreted in the plasma, where they are associated with high-density lipoproteins (HDLs), while PON2 is an intracellular enzyme, expressed in most tissues and organs, including the brain. PON1 received its name from its ability to hydrolyze paraoxon, the active metabolite of the organophosphorus (OP) insecticide parathion, and also more efficiently hydrolyzes the active metabolites of several other OPs. PON2 and PON3 do not have OP-esterase a

Review of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases helps further define pathology of the novel paradigm for Alzheimer's with heavy metals as primary disease cause.

Pathologies of neurological diseases are increasingly recognized to have common structural and molecular events that can fit, sometimes loosely, into a central pathological theme. A better understanding of the genetic, proteomic and metabolic similarities between three common neurodegenerative diseases - Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) - and how these similarities relate to their unique pathological features may shed more light on the underlying pathology of each. These are complex multigenic neuroinflammatory diseases caused by a comb

Concentration profiling of minerals in iliac crest bone tissue of opium addicted humans using inductively coupled plasma and discriminant analysis techniques.

Opium addiction is one of the main health problems in developing countries and induces serious defects on the human body. In this work, the concentrations of 32 minerals including alkaline, heavy and toxic metals have been determined in the iliac crest bone tissue of 22 opium addicted individuals using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The bone tissues of 30 humans with no physiological and metabolomic diseases were used as the control group. For subsequent analyses, the linear and quadratic discriminant analysis techniques have been used for classification of
