The epidemiology of soil-transmitted helminths in Bihar State, India.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) infect over a billion individuals worldwide. In India, 241 million children are estimated to need deworming to avert the negative consequences STH infections can have on child health and development. In February-April 2011, 17 million children in Bihar State were dewormed during a government-led school-based deworming campaign. Prior to programme implementation, a study was conducted to assess STH prevalence in the school-age population to direct the programme. The study also investigated risk factors for STH infections, including caste, literacy,

Prevalence of intestinal helminths among inhabitants of Cambodia (2006-2011).

In order to investigate the status of intestinal helminthic infections in Cambodia, epidemiological surveys were carried out on a national scale, including 19 provinces. A total of 32,201 fecal samples were collected from schoolchildren and adults between 2006 and 2011 and examined once by the Kato-Katz thick smear technique. The overall egg positive rate of intestinal helminths was 26.2%. The prevalence of hookworms was the highest (9.6%), followed by that of Opisthorchis viverrini/minute intestinal flukes (Ov/MIF) (5.7%), Ascaris lumbricoides (4.6%), and Trichuris trichiura (4.1%). Other typ

Gastrointestinal helminths of camels (Camelus dromedarius) in center of Iran.

Camels are multipurpose animals in Iran. As parasitic diseases are the major cause of impaired meat and milk production in this animal, the present study aimed at determining gastrointestinal helminthic infections of Iranian camels in the center of the country. Gastrointestinal (GI) tract of 144 carcasses of one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius) slaughtered in Yazd, Esfahan and Kerman provinces' abattoirs were examined for adult helminths. Camels were from both sexes and different ages. Recovered parasites were identified according to described keys by light microscope. Of 144 tested camels,

Paradoxical associations between soil-transmitted helminths and Plasmodium falciparum infection.

Evidence on the comorbidity between soil-transmitted helminth infections and malaria is scarce and divergent. This study explored the interactions between soil-transmitted helminth infections and uncomplicated falciparum malaria in an endemic area of Colombia. A paired case-control study matched by sex, age and location in Tierralta, Cordoba, was done between January and September 2010. The incident cases were 68 patients with falciparum malaria and 178 asymptomatic controls. A questionnaire was used to gather information on sociodemographic variables. Additionally physical examinations were c

Basophils orchestrate chronic allergic dermatitis and protective immunity against helminths.

Basophils are associated with T helper 2 (Th2) cell-polarized immune responses such as allergic disorders or helminth infections. To directly address the role of basophils for type 2 immunity, we generated transgenic mice with constitutive and selective deletion of basophils. Differentiation and accumulation of Th2 cells, induction of eosinophilia, and increase in serum IgE or IgG1 induced by allergens or by infection with the helminth Nippostrongylus brasiliensis appeared to be basophil independent. Further, basophils were not required for passive IgE- or IgG1-mediated systemic anaphylaxis. H

Concurrent infection with Trichinella spiralis and other helminths in pigs.

The aim of this study was to investigate possible influence of different helmintosis in the development of Trichinella spiralis in experimental infected pigs. Forty-two Iberian pigs were allocated to six groups. Three groups were single inoculated with Ascaris suum, Metastrongylus apri or T. spiralis, respectively. Two groups were co-infected with T. spiralis and A. suum or T. spiralis and M. apri, respectively, while the last group included uninfected control pigs. Clinical signs were only observed in pigs with single or concurrent M. apri infections, with more severe respiratory symptoms in

The cost effectiveness of mass drug therapy for intestinal helminths.

This article reviews the principles involved in establishing the cost effectiveness of mass drug therapy for the major intestinal nematodes and the intestinal form of schistosomiasis, as well as the extent to which the available studies have provided definitive answers. For governments or agencies that have decided to introduce a control programme, there is considerable evidence about the comparative cost effectiveness of different types of delivery strategies. For example, mass treatment is more cost effective than selective treatment (treatment after individual screening) in high prevalence

Intestinal helminths and xerophthalmia in Nepal. A case-control study.

The study reports on 25 cases of xerophthalmia among children 6-120 months of age and single controls for which faecal egg counts were available as proxy for hookworm and Ascaris lumbricoides infection. The selection of cases and controls was performed by ophthalmic assistants. Controls were healthy children matched for sex, age, and neighbourhood of residence. Faecal analyses were performed by Kato thick-smear technique, recording the number of eggs of hookworm and A. lumbricoides. The xerophthalmia cases had a significantly higher prevalence (P < 0.05) and intensity (P < 0.01) of infection,

Intestinal helminths of cats in the Kainji Lake area, Nigeria.

Six parasitic helminths detected were Ancylostoma sp., Opisthorchis felineus, Toxocara mystrax, Hepaticola hepatica, Taenia sp. and Hydatigera taeniaeformis. The prevalence of H. hepatica, T. mystrax and H. taeniaeformis is associated with rodents hunted by cats, and that of O. felineus with fish fed to cats. The role of cats as primary host and reservoir for these helminths, which could be of zoonotic importance, is briefly mentioned.

Diversity of helminths parasitising North-East Atlantic and Antarctic seabirds.

Seabirds are largely used as indicators of Ocean health and are final hosts of several helminth parasites. However, the helminth fauna of seabirds is still poorly studied. Here, we quantified the diversity of gastrointestinal parasites in 52 individuals belonging to 10 seabird species with different habitat preferences and feeding strategies from the North-East Atlantic and Antarctica. Fresh carcasses were collected in Northern France and at Svarthamaren (Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica), helminth parasites were extracted from the gastrointestinal tract, and were identified by morphological ins

Maternal helminths rewire the microbiota to promote offspring antiviral immunity.

Maternal environmental exposures can alter microbiome composition and lead to changes in offspring immunity. Industrialization has led to significant shifts in the microbiome, but whether these have transgenerational impacts remains unclear. Here, we discovered that maternal helminths, an evolutionarily conserved mammalian partner lost in industrialized societies, confer broad and lasting protection against respiratory viruses in offspring. This heterologous antiviral immunity is mediated by helminth-induced changes in the maternal microbiota. The tryptophan metabolite indole-3-propionic acid

Eco-evolutionary dynamics of anthelmintic resistance in soil-transmitted helminths.

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) of soil-transmitted helminth parasites against the most widely available drugs is an ongoing concern for both human-infecting and livestock-infecting species. There has been substantial evidence of AR in livestock but less in humans, which may be due to a variety of reasons. In this paper, we develop an eco-evolutionary model that couples the life cycle of these parasites with their underlying evolution in a single biallelic genetic locus that confers resistance to treatment drugs. We determine the critical treatment frequency needed to effectively eliminate the po

Current Efficacy of Multiepitope Vaccines Against Helminths: A Systematic Review.

Background: Vaccination represents an efficient way to control communicable diseases. Reliable vaccines would reduce the use of anthelmintics drugs and fight against the concern of anthelmintics resistances. Unfortunately, anthelmintic vaccines face many difficulties in their development. One of the most innovative vaccine models in this field is multiepitope vaccines since, based on advances in immunoinformatics, they facilitate immunization against parasites at different stages of their cycles. Objective: In this study, we evaluate the published efficacy of multiepitope vaccines against helm

Amphibian helminths in Europe revisited: taxonomy, threats, and ecological insights.

Amphibians face numerous threats, including climate change, pollution, and emerging infectious diseases. While chytrid fungi have dominated recent research on amphibian pathogens, helminth parasites, despite their diversity and potential to impact amphibian health, remain underexplored, particularly in Europe. The goal of this review is to highlight the current state of knowledge on amphibian helminths in Europe, including current knowledge on species diversity, parasites' life history, and the availability of molecular data. We outline major challenges in amphibian helminthology and propose s

Infection with soil-transmitted helminths and their impact on coinfections.

The most important soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) affecting humans are roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms, with a large proportion of the world's population infected with one or more of these intestinal parasites. On top of that, concurrent infections with several viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and other helminths such as trematodes are common in STH-endemic areas. STHs are potent immunomodulators, but knowledge about the effects of STH infection on the direction and extent of coinfections with other pathogens and vice versa is incomplete. By focusing on Kenya, a country where STH infection
