"Do I Need Help?": A Qualitative Study of Interns on a Pediatrics Night Float Rotation.

OBJECTIVE: Nighttime clinical work comprises a substantial portion of inpatient training, yet interns often make decisions without supervisors physically present and must actively initiate requests for input. How interns decide to seek support from attendings is not well understood. We aimed to explore interns' help-seeking behaviors from attendings during clinical decision-making at night. METHODS: Twelve pediatric and family medicine interns participated in semi-structured interviews and shared 19 stories about help-seeking during nighttime clinical encounters at a tertiary children's hospi

"What are you Complaining About, How Hard can a Woman Hit?": Male Experiences of Gender-Based Violence and Help-Seeking in England.

Gender-based violence constitutes a significant global concern. Yet, most research focuses on women, with limited studies examining the lived experiences of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) male victims of gender-based violence and help-seeking behavior from a co-production research approach underpinned by intersectionality theory. Our study makes an original contribution to fill this gap. 30 BAME male participants with lived experience of gender-based violence were recruited from England (Middlesbrough, Bradford, Nottingham, and Manchester). Two focus groups, comprising five participan

Factors Influencing Adolescents' Use of Anonymous Reporting Systems to Seek Help for Peers in Severe Mental Distress.

PURPOSE: Adolescent mental distress, including suicidality, is a pressing public health problem facing contemporary adolescents. School-based programs facilitate early identification and intervention, yet barriers remain in disclosing peer mental health issues due to potential social repercussions. Technology-facilitated reporting systems (TFRS) used in >50% of K-12 schools offer a discreet reporting option, yet little is known about factors that influence youths' use of TFRS. METHODS: This study evaluates the use of TFRS among middle school adolescents who know peers in severe mental distres

Is lower symptom recognition associated with socioeconomic inequalities in help-seeking for potential breast cancer symptoms?

OBJECTIVE: Socioeconomic inequalities in recognising signs and symptoms of cancer may result in inequalities in timely help-seeking and subsequent prognosis of breast cancer. We explored the mediating role of symptom attribution and concern on the relationship between level of education and help-seeking for potential breast cancer symptoms. METHODS: Women aged ≥47 years (n = 961) were purposively recruited (by education) to complete an online vignette-based survey that included nipple rash and axillary lump (in separate vignettes) as potential symptoms of breast cancer. Women completed questi

A systematic narrative review of the research evidence of the impact of intersectionality on service engagement and help-seeking across different groups of women, trans women, and non-binary individuals experiencing homelessness and housing exclusion.

BACKGROUND: Women with experience of homelessness face severe health inequalities, with their average age at death being nearly half that of the general population. Recent research emphasises the compound challenges women with homeless experiences face in seeking help, accessing and engaging with support services, but we know little about the influence of different intersectional dimensions on their support access and experiences. The paper aims to review the evidence and critically engage with the impact of gender/sex, race, ethnicity, age, disability, class/poverty, migration status, religion

Gambling and family: A two-way relationship.

Background and aims Families play an important role in the evolution of gambling and are also adversely affected by the disordered gambling of any one of their members. The aims of this study were to explore both the role families play in gambling initiation, maintenance, and help-seeking, and the harm caused to families by the gambling behavior using a qualitative approach. Methods Regular older adult gamblers were included in the study. In-depth interviews were conducted with 25 older adults to gain an understanding of gambling from their perspective. Older adult gamblers described their liv

Obstacles to Help-Seeking for Sexual Offenders: Implications for Prevention of Sexual Abuse.

Persons with potentially harmful sexual interests such as attraction to minors are unlikely to seek or receive treatment before a sexual offense has been committed. The current study explored barriers to help-seeking in a sample of 372 individuals in treatment for sexual offending. Results revealed that the shame and secrecy resulting from stigma associated with pedophilic interests often prevented our respondents from seeking professional counseling, and only about 20% tried to talk to anyone about their sexual interests prior to their arrest. Barriers to seeking and receiving psychological s

The association between pathological gambling and suicidality in treatment-seeking pathological gamblers in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have noted a significant association between suicidality and pathological gambling (PG), but the exact relationship has not been extensively characterized. It is unclear whether gambling precipitates suicidality, or whether underlying psychiatric problems, such as mood disturbances, lead to both gambling and suicidality. Furthermore, all published data on the association between suicidality and gambling is from high-income countries, and the nature of this relationship in low- and middle-income countries, such as South Africa, has not been explored. METHODS: Th

Motivators for help-seeking among people with opioid use disorder: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

INTRODUCTION: A substantial proportion of individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) never engage with specialist substance use treatment, despite strong evidence that treatment participation reduces overdose and mortality risk. Understanding the subjective experiences that drive or inhibit help-seeking may inform approaches that increase service engagement. METHODS: Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with six men currently attending a community drug treatment service in Bristol, UK. Interviews explored lived experiences of

Using the Life History Calendar to Examine Victimization, Mental Health, and Seeking and Attaining Help Among Transgender Women: An Example of a Culturally Relevant Adaptation.

Transgender women are at increased risk for interpersonal violence victimization, including physical and sexual child abuse and mistreatment, intimate partner violence and sexual assault, and transgender-related community violence. Experiencing multiple forms of interpersonal victimization is associated with a range of adverse mental health outcomes. Life course approaches such as the life history calendar (LHC) are useful for examining trajectories of victimization and associated mental health outcomes, yet to date this method has not been used to examine transgender women's victimization tra

Trauma-Disclosure, Meaning-Making, and Help-Seeking in Mothers Experiencing Homelessness: Results From a Trauma-Focused, Clinical Ethnographic Narrative Intervention.

Mothers experiencing homelessness are seldom asked about past trauma that may be causal to housing instability and poor health. There are also few validated trauma-focused interventions in family shelters. To address this gap, we tested the feasibility and acceptability of the trauma-focused clinical ethnographic narrative intervention (CENI-TF) in increasing mothers' trauma disclosure, appraisal of its meaning in their lives, and help-seeking behaviors. We also present the qualitative findings to contextualize the intervention. Findings are organized under three major domains and nine subthem

Help-seeking behaviour in primary care of men and women with a history of abuse: A Dutch cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies show an association between a history of abuse and higher care demand. However, studies in general practice regarding help-seeking behaviour by patients (mainly male patients) with a history of abuse are scarce. OBJECTIVES: To analyse help-seeking behaviour in general practice of men and women with a history of abuse. METHODS: A cohort study using data from a Dutch primary care registration network from 2015 to 2019. We included all patients aged ≥ 18 years who indicated on a questionnaire that they did or did not have a history of abuse. We analysed differences

Differences in Coping Strategies and Help-Seeking Behaviours among Australian Junior and Senior Doctors during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, hospital medical staff (HMS) have faced significant personal, workplace, and financial disruption. Many have experienced psychosocial burden, exceeding already concerning baseline levels. This study examines the types and predictors of coping strategies and help-seeking behaviours utilised by Australian junior and senior HMS during the first year of the pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey of Australian frontline healthcare workers was conducted between 27 August and 23 October 2020. Data collected included demographics, personal and

Barriers to Help-Seeking for Sexual Violence Among Married or Cohabiting Women in Ghana.

While sexual violence against women has gained attention in sub-Saharan Africa, research examining help-seeking remains limited. Scholarship on barriers to help-seeking among sexually abused married or cohabiting women is particularly lacking. We used the barriers model and held 15 in-depth interviews with sexually abused Ghanaian married or cohabiting women to examine help-seeking behaviors. Participants identified multiple barriers to help-seeking, including financial difficulties, lack of social support, and stigma. The results corroborate the barriers model's formulation of the challenges

Problem Gambling Among Australian Male Prisoners: Lifetime Prevalence, Help-Seeking, and Association With Incarceration and Aboriginality.

Prisoners represent a group containing the highest problem gambling (PG) rate found in any population. PG is of particular concern among Indigenous Australians. Little data exist concerning PG rates among Indigenous Australian prisoners. The present study aimed to address this gap in the literature by examining the lifetime prevalence of PG among male prisoners, whilst identifying prisoners of Aboriginal background. The EIGHT Gambling Screen (Early Intervention Gambling Health Test) was administered to 296 prisoners across three male prisons in South Australia. Previous help-seeking behaviour
