BACKGROUND: Canine visceral hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a highly aggressive cancer of endothelial origin that closely resembles visceral angiosarcoma in humans, both clinically and histopathologically. Currently there is an unmet need for new diagnostics and therapies for both forms of this disease. BACKGROUND: Splenic masses are common in older dogs; yet diagnosis preceding splenectomy and histopathology remains elusive. Dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (DLVOTO) is a common condition in cats and humans. In this case report, a dog is described with DLVOTO secondary to severe intra-abdominal hemorrhage caused by a hemangiosarcoma. Data on age, sex, and breed were obtained from surgical pathologic records of 92 dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma (SHS) and for 125 dogs with splenic hematoma (SHA) diagnosed in 1985 at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Further information on body weight, clinical and surgical findings, and survival time was obtained for 59 dogs (64.1%) with SHS and 91 dogs (72.8%) with SHA. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the CT features of pulmonary metastases in dogs with hemangiosarcoma (HSA) at various sites. Additionally, the CT characteristics of extrapulmonary metastases in the same population were assessed.
METHODS: Retrospective, observational, and descriptive study conducted from April 2013 to January 2024. Dogs with histologically confirmed HSA and suspected or cytologically/histologically confirmed lung metastases were included. A 12-year-old neutered male German shepherd dog was evaluated after dying suddenly at home. A few hours prior to the unexpected death the dog displayed anorexia and lethargy. Post-mortem examination and histopathology led to a diagnosis of marked hemoabdomen and hypovolemia due to a single ruptured splenic hemangiosarcoma.
