[Vasculo-Behcet's disease with fatal massive hemoptysis].

A 39-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of hemoptysis. A chest X-ray film on admission showed a patchy shadow in the left lower lung field. Computed tomography revealed nodular opacities in the left pulmonary artery. The patient had history of oral ulcers, erythema nodosum, pustular lesions, and genital ulcers. Furthermore, the needle reaction was positive. Our diagnosis was an incomplete type of Behcet's disease. A radionuclide-venography and lung-perfusion study disclosed deep-vein thrombosis. Combined therapy with prednisolone, colchicine, and indomethacin farnesil was initia

Beyond the Usual Suspects: Rare Causes of Hemoptysis.

Hemoptysis is a potentially life-threatening phenomenon with a wide range of underlying causes. While most episodes are linked to common conditions such as infections, malignancy, or pulmonary embolism, a proportion of cases are due to unusual and often unexpected etiologies. This narrative review summarizes published case reports, series, and observational studies describing rare causes of hemoptysis, including vascular malformations, congenital anomalies, benign tumors, systemic diseases, and unusual infections. These conditions are frequently overlooked, which may delay recognition and appr

Bilateral Rasmussen's Aneurysms: A Rare Etiology of Hemoptysis.

Rasmussen's aneurysm is a pseudoaneurysm of a pulmonary artery branch occurring adjacent to or within a tuberculous cavity and represents a rare but potentially fatal cause of hemoptysis. Bilateral involvement is exceptionally uncommon and sparsely reported in medical literature. This case report discusses a 45-year-old female with pulmonary tuberculosis on antitubercular therapy who presented with recurrent hemoptysis and progressive breathlessness. Computed tomography pulmonary angiography demonstrated multiple bilateral cavitary lesions with associated small aneurysmal dilatations arising f

A 36-Year-Old Man With Hemoptysis and Fevers.

A 36-year-old man with medical history of inferior vena cava thrombus and recurrent pulmonary embolism (PE) presents to the emergency room with fever, malaise, and night sweats for 3 days and hemoptysis (approximately half a tablespoon) in the last 24 hours. He reports the first diagnosis of inferior vena cava thrombus in December 2022, when he presented with similar symptoms and was started on apixaban. Since then, he had 3 additional episodes in the following 6 months in which he was found to have recurrent PEs despite compliance with anticoagulation and changes in regimen (warfarin then eno

Aortic dissection presenting with Hemoptysis: a diagnostic challenge.

Hemoptysis is the expectoration of blood originating from the lower respiratory tract and has a wide differential diagnosis, ranging from benign conditions to life-threatening diseases that include pulmonary embolism, severe infections, and aortic dissection. We present a 53-year-old male with a history of hypertension, COPD, and smoking, presenting to the emergency department with a two-day history of hemoptysis. In spite of the absence of classical symptoms such as chest pain, his chest X-ray showed mediastinal widening, and further imaging was performed with contrast-enhanced CT angiography

A Case of an Unusual Presentation of Hemoptysis: Oropharyngeal Leech.

We report a case of a 36-year-old male who presented with a complaint of blood-stained sputum for 15 days. The patient gave a history of drinking from a contaminated pool. On examination, there were blood streaks on the posterior pharyngeal wall. The patient's vital and baseline blood investigations were within normal limits. On direct laryngoscopy under general anesthesia, a greenish-black foreign body was found moving in the oropharynx and was taken out by heated Magill forceps. It was identified as a leech. Through this case, we emphasize the need for well-set diagnostic criteria that can n

Unusual Cause of Hemoptysis in a Woman With Cystic Fibrosis.

A 20-year-old patient with cystic fibrosis (CF) complicated by pansinusitis, pancreatic insufficiency, and diabetes presented to the local ED after an episode of large-volume hemoptysis at home. At baseline, she had advanced lung disease (FEV1, 0.97 L; 31% predicted) and upper lobe-predominant fibrocavitary changes. She was intermittently followed at a regional lung transplant center. She was previously evaluated for transplant but was not listed at the time of this presentation because of nontuberculous mycobacteria infection. She had never used tobacco, without reports of recreational inhale

Carcinoid Tumor Presenting as Hemoptysis and Elevated Diaphragm.

A bronchial carcinoid tumor is a rare pulmonary neuroendocrine tumor. This report describes a case where a patient experienced multiple episodes of hemoptysis and dyspnea on exertion over the course of five months. An initial chest X-ray showed an elevated right hemidiaphragm with atelectasis, and a follow-up chest computed tomography (CT) scan was ordered to further assess this finding. The CT revealed a tumor occluding 90% of the right main stem bronchus lumen. A bronchoscopy with biopsy was then performed, confirming the diagnosis of a pulmonary carcinoid tumor. The patient underwent surgic

A 19-Year-Old With Hemoptysis and Shortness of Breath.

A 19-year-old woman with no medical history who did not use tobacco presented to the hospital with post-COVID-19 cough for 2 months and new onset of shortness of breath and blood-tinged sputum. She was initially treated empirically for community-acquired pneumonia because her chest radiograph showed a right upper lobe infiltrate. Further CT scan imaging revealed a right hilar lymph node conglomerate and extensive lymphadenopathy. The patient left to pursue care at a facility that accepted her insurance. Two weeks later, the patient presented for severe left-sided lower back pain, and she was f

A 31-Year-Old Female With Postcoital Hemoptysis.

Hemoptysis is a common presenting symptom in the clinical setting. The most frequent causes of non-life-threatening hemoptysis, which usually originates from the pulmonary arterial circulation, include pulmonary pathologies such as infections, inflammatory airway diseases, and bronchial neoplasms. Hemoptysis occurring only after sexual intercourse, however, is a rare phenomenon. Most of the reported cases have resulted from an underlying cardiac pathology that is predisposed to acute cardiovascular decompensation, a sharp increase in pulmonary capillary pressures, and pulmonary capillary ruptu

[Pasteurella multocida Pneumonia with Hemoptysis in an Immunocompetent Case].

Pasteurella species are gram-negative bacilli found in healthy pets' oropharynx and gastrointestinal tract flora. In humans, skin and soft tissue infections develop most frequently with the bite or scratching of animals such as cats or dogs. At the same time, they cause infections in the respiratory tract, mainly in patients with chronic lung disease or immunosuppressive patients. In this case report, a rare case of pneumonia caused by P.multocida bacteria in a patient with bronchiectasis was presented. A young male patient was admitted to the emergency department of our hospital with complain

Severe Hemoptysis Secondary to Actinomycosis: A Case Report.

Pulmonary actinomycosis (PA) is an uncommon, asymptomatic, and frequently misdiagnosed pulmonary infectious illness. Our patient remained undiagnosed despite extensive regular and invasive testing, significant intermittent hemoptysis, and repeated bronchial artery embolization. Ultimately, a left lower lobectomy was performed via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, and a histopathological examination revealed an actinomycete infection.

Tracheal Hemangioma: A Rare Cause of Hemoptysis in Children.

Tracheal hemangioma is a very rare benign vascular tumor. Few cases of tracheal hemangioma in children are reported in the literature. Chronic cough is the main symptom of the disease; however, hemoptysis is rarely reported as a symptom of tracheal hemangioma in children. Here, we report a case of tracheal hemangioma in an eight-year-old girl admitted to our pediatric department for recurrent hemoptysis. Routine biological and radiological investigations were normal. Diagnosis was made using computed tomography and bronchoscopy. Beta-blocker therapy was not efficient. Bronchoscopic treatment b

A 73-Year-Old Man With Refractory Hemoptysis.

A 73-year-old man with fever and fatigue presented to his doctor. He had a history of smoking (52 pack-years) and COPD on home oxygen therapy. The patient had no significant family medical history, illicit drug-use history, or recent alcohol use. Chest CT scan showed a slight infiltrative shadow of the left lower lobe on a background of emphysema. Broad-spectrum antibiotics were administered for community-acquired pneumonia without any clinical or radiologic improvement after 2 weeks of therapy. Additional tests showed rapid deterioration of renal function (creatinine level, which was 0.68 mg/

A Rare Case of Hemoptysis Caused by a Laryngeal Leech.

The larynx is an uncommon location for live foreign bodies. The leech can reach the glottis during consumption of contaminated water but is usually expelled by an effective cough reflex. Patients present with hoarseness and dysphagia and occasionally with dyspnea or hemoptysis. Endoscopically, a mobile mass is usually noted in the supraglottic area. We present a rare case of a laryngeal leech in a 62-year-old-male farmer who lives in a rural area. The leech was removed successfully with direct laryngoscopy under general anesthesia.

A 24-Year-Old Man With Recurrent Hemoptysis.

A 24-year-old man was admitted for a new episode of hemoptysis. He reported 3 episodes of hemoptysis in the past 2 years. He had no other medical history and was a nonsmoker. As a Vietnamese person born and living in Vietnam, he was at risk for TB, but had not had contact with those having TB in his family or workplace, was never imprisoned nor homeless, and never traveled abroad. He never experienced pneumonia. He coughed up a small amount of fresh with air red blood (around 5 mL each time) several time for 3 days. He had no dyspnea, no chest pain, no fever, no asthenia, and no anorexia.

Endo-bronchial application of glue in the management of hemoptysis.

BACKGROUND: Hemoptysis from varied etiologies, often fails to respond to conservative therapy. The conventional managements of such a situation are Bronchial Artery Embolization (BAE) or thoracic surgery which is often not possible. Endoscopic application of glue may stand as a method of therapy in these circumstances. METHODS: 202 patients of hemoptysis were treated by video-bronchoscopy assisted endobronchial application of glue (n-butyl cyanoacrylate) with the help of polyethylene catheter being placed through the working channel. The details of the procedure and their 6 month follow up ar

Hemoptysis in the Immunocompromised Patient: Do Not Forget Strongyloidiasis.

Strongyloidiasis, due to infection with the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, affects millions of people in the tropics and subtropics. Strongyloides has a unique auto-infective lifecycle such that it can persist in the human host for decades. In immunosuppressed patients, especially those on corticosteroids, potentially fatal disseminated strongyloidiasis can occur, often with concurrent secondary infections. Herein, we present two immunocompromised patients with severe strongyloidiasis who presented with pneumonia, hemoptysis, and sepsis. Both patients were immigrants from developing count
