Many organisms engage in symbiosis with microbial partners that are not passed on directly to offspring but are acquired from the environment each generation. Hosts can minimize the risk of relying on such horizontal transmission of beneficial symbionts by engaging in specialized acquisition behaviours. Squash bugs, Anasa tristis, locate their Caballeronia symbiont through olfactory cues released from adult frass. After ingesting the symbiont, the nymph's behaviour shifts from symbiont searching to host-plant feeding. To begin elucidating the underlying changes behind this behavioural switch,

Nezara viridula (L.) and Halyomorpha halys (Stål) are stink bug pests that damage fruit in a variety of crops throughout the southeastern United States. Trichopoda pennipes (F.) parasitizes N. viridula late instars and adults, however, little is known regarding parasitism of H. halys by this tachinid in systems where both stink bug species coexist. Thus, our main objective was to analyze patterns of T. pennipes parasitism for adult N. viridula and H. halys in corn, cotton, and soybean. We also assessed location of T. pennipes eggs on stink bug bodies as well as successful emergence from parasi

Diet can influence parasitoid reproductive performance, and therefore, the efficacy of biocontrol programs. We evaluated the influence of food deprivation on the reproductive fitness and behavior of the egg parasitoid Hadronotus pennsylvanicus (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), a prospective biocontrol agent for Leptoglossus zonatus (Heteroptera: Coreidae). Newly emerged female parasitoids were mated and provided host eggs every other day while being provisioned with various honey diet regimes or a consistent supply of water. When given frequent access to a honey diet, female parasitoids lived signif

Megacopta cribraria (F.) (Hemiptera: Plataspidae) is an invasive pest of soybean that has spread across the southeastern United States since its initial discovery in 2009 in Georgia. Previous studies in the southeastern states have documented both the population dynamics of this pest and host plant resistance (HPR) among soybean varieties, although the specific mechanisms of HPR remain unknown. The objectives of this study were, therefore, to 1) quantify field resistance to M. cribraria in multiple soybean varieties in two states previously affected by severe M. cribraria infestations, North C

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, was introduced to north central North America from Asia in 2000, and it has become a major pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. Understanding how natural enemies impact aphid populations in the field is an important component in developing a comprehensive management plan. We examined the impact of naturally occurring predators in the field by using exclusion cages during July-August 2004 and 2005. Field cages of different mesh diameters were used to exclude different sizes of natural enemies from aphid-infested plots. Plots were surveyed twice we

Maneuvering on fast running waters is an energy demanding task, making this niche hard to access. The propelling fan of the water strider Rhagovelia is an evolutionary innovation that enhances the maneuverability in these environments. This structure consisting of 20 lamellate branches, each with thinner secondary branches, offers a unique model to understand the tenuous link between morphological innovations and adaptation to new ecological environments. However, the principles of enhanced thrust, i.e. the magnitude of the force transfer between the fan and the fluid, is not understood. We ch

This study investigates the selective toxicity and molecular interactions of acetamiprid (ACE) with the predator Cyrtorhinus lividipennis and calf thymus DNA (ctDNA). The selective ratio (SR) of ACE was (SR ≤ 1), 0.564 and 0.513 after 24 and 48 respectively, indicating non-selectivity and higher toxicity to C. lividipennis than to the target pest Nilaparvata lugens. Sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC30) of ACE exhibited concentration- and time-dependent effects on C. lividipennis, including increased mortality. Biochemical analysis revealed metabolic stress in C. lividipennis, along with in

Specialized host-microbe symbioses canonically show greater diversity than expected from simple models, both at the population level and within individual hosts. To understand how this heterogeneity arises, we utilize the squash bug, Anasa tristis, and its bacterial symbionts in the genus Caballeronia. We modulate symbiont bottleneck size and inoculum composition during colonization to demonstrate the significance of ecological drift, the noisy fluctuations in community composition due to demographic stochasticity. Consistent with predictions from the neutral theory of biodiversity, we found t

Pyriproxyfen is a juvenile hormone analogue that is commonly used to control the immature stages of mosquitoes in both artificial and natural water reservoirs. Recently, concerns have been raised regarding the community effectiveness of pyriproxyfen in preventing vector-transmitted diseases. Such concerns have been based on the unintended effects on non-target organisms and the selection of resistant mosquito populations. This investigation was, therefore, conducted to evaluate the toxicity of pyriproxyfen to Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae and the backswimmer Buenoa amnigenus (Hemip

Southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) and redbanded stink bug, Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) are two of the most important seed sucking pests affecting Louisiana soybean production and rice stink bug, Oebalus pugnax (F.) is an important late season pest in Louisiana rice. Exploration of chemicals that exhibit attraction or repellent activities toward major stink bug species would be beneficial in developing push-pull strategies. Spinosad is a commercially available natural insecticide that may have arrestant, attractant, or phagostimulant properties against stink bugs. To test this,

In integrated pest management systems, biological and chemical controls must be compatible. The insecticide spinosad affects some non-target insects and might compromise their fitness. The objective of this study was to evaluate the histopathological and cytotoxic effects of spinosad on the salivary complex of the predatory bug Podisus nigrispinus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). Spinosad toxicity and insect survival were determined using six concentrations of insecticide. Ultrastructural changes and cell death of salivary glands were analyzed after P. nigrispinus exposure to spinosad LC50 (3.15 μ

Three main types of stink bug injury have been reported on the surface of apple fruit: (1) discolored dots, (2) discolored dots with depressions, and (3) discolored dots with discolored depressions. From 2005 to 2008, studies were performed to determine the factors linked to the variations in the appearance of adult stink bug injury on apple fruit observed at harvest. The main factors tested were type of feeding injury (i.e., mechanical versus breakdown and removal of tissues), time between injury and evaluation, cultivar, fruit maturity, and relative exposure to sunlight and UV radiation. The shield bug, Graphosoma lineatum (Heteroptera, Pentatomidae), harbors extracellular Pantoea-like symbiont in the enclosed crypts of the midgut. The symbiotic bacteria are essential for normal longevity and fecundity of this insect. In this study, life table analysis was used to assess the biological importance of the gut symbiont in G. lineatum. Considering vertical transmission of the bacterial symbiont through the egg surface contamination, we used surface sterilization of the eggs to remove the symbiont. The symbiont population was decreased in the newborn nymphs hatched from the surface

BACKGROUND: Many animals and plants establish intimate symbiotic relationships with specific microorganisms acquired from the environment. Given the immense diversity of environmental microbiomes, selecting appropriate partners from such a vast microbial pool poses a critical challenge for host organisms. To meet this challenge, hosts have evolved sophisticated internal partner-choice mechanisms that ensure stable associations with beneficial microbes. However, because these symbionts primarily inhabit external environments, environmental conditions themselves are also expected to influence th

BACKGROUND: Predatory hemipterans deploy complex venom cocktails to immobilize preys, yet the specific roles of many individual venom components remain poorly understood.
RESULTS: Four lysozyme genes were identified from the genome of the predatory assassin bug Sycanus bifidus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), comprising one i-type (SbLyzi) and three c-type lysozyme genes (SbLyzc1-3). Transcriptomic and quantitative (q)PCR analyses revealed that these lysozymes were expressed at different levels in various venom glands. Of them, SbLyzc1-3 with signal peptides displayed significant transcriptions in th

Given the limitations of conventional pesticides, sustainable pest control alternatives are urgently needed. Hexaflumuron (HE), an insect growth regulator, is a potential candidate, yet its efficacy requires enhancement. This study developed a star polycation (SPc)-based nanocarrier to improve HE delivery. The HE/SPc complex was formed via electrostatic and van der Waals interactions, reducing the particle size from 751.21 to 174.62 nm. Compared to HE alone, HE/SPc complex enhanced retention and coverage for effective foliar application, and significantly enhanced insecticidal activity against

BACKGROUND: The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) (BSMB) is a biosecurity threat globally. Its most likely avenue of entry is via shipping transport of a multitude of commodities. Currently employed biosecurity treatments (methyl bromide, sulfuryl fluoride) pose several concerns including climate change, environmental and occupational health and safety. Ethyl formate with dilution in carbon dioxide has been shown to be an effective biosecurity treatment for controlling BMSB. Carbon dioxide is a known synergist in fumigation and is a greenhouse gas contributing to climate change.

Many insecticides can disrupt key natural enemies, such as Orius insidiosus Say, resulting in arthropod pest outbreaks and/or resurgences of minor and major pests. Some of these insecticides used to control pest arthropods can be lethal or have sublethal effects on natural enemies through direct contact, residual exposure, or ingestion, thereby reducing the natural enemy's ability to provide biocontrol and ecosystem services and making them less effective in inundated releases. Thus, further studies are needed to determine the negative effects of reduced-risk insecticides with low mammalian to

The western tarnished plant bug, Lygus hesperus (Knight), has emerged as a pest of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) in the Lower Columbia Basin of Oregon and Washington. This species is generally found infesting several other field-grown crops in the region; however, their host preference is poorly understood. Thus, greenhouse cage experiments were conducted to evaluate L. hesperus host preference by simultaneously presenting adults with 4 host plants: potato, alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., carrot, Daucus carota L., and pea, Pisum sativum L. In addition, an oviposition test was conducted. The res
