Microbial communities and their potential for degradation of dissolved organic carbon in cryoconite hole environments of Himalaya and Antarctica.

Cryoconite holes (cylindrical melt-holes on the glacier surface) are important hydrological and biological systems within glacial environments that support diverse microbial communities and biogeochemical processes. This study describes retrievable heterotrophic microbes in cryoconite hole water from three geographically distinct sites in Antarctica, and a Himalayan glacier, along with their potential to degrade organic compounds found in these environments. Microcosm experiments (22 days) show that 13-60% of the dissolved organic carbon in the water within cryoconite holes is bio-available to

The critical utilization of active heterotrophic microalgae for bioremoval of Cr(VI) in organics co-contaminated wastewater.

Considering the importance of removing toxic Cr(VI) from practical wastewater containing complex pollutants, this study presented for the first time the utilization of the live heterotrophic microalgae (Botryocossuss sp. NJD-1) to achieve a concurrent abatement of Cr(VI), TOC, NO3-N and PO4-P, through a comprehensive biochemical process. The experimental results showed that the Cr(VI) removal efficiencies in the culture with different types of organic descended in the order of sodium acetate, ethanol and methanol. The highest removal efficiencies were achieved as 94.2%, 98.2%, 66.9% and 99.2%

Use of gene probes to assess the impact and effectiveness of aerobic in situ bioremediation of TCE.

Gene probe hybridization was used to determine distribution and expression of co-metabolic genes at a contaminated site as it underwent in situ methanotrophic bioremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE). The bioremediation strategies tested included a series of air, air:methane, and air:methane:nutrient pulses of the test plot using horizontal injection wells. During the test period, the levels of TCE reduced drastically in almost all test samples. Sediment core samples (n=367) taken from 0 m (surface)-43 m depth were probed for gene coding for methanotrophic soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO)

Granule size-dependent biotransformation of organic micropollutants in aerobic granular sludge under different bioconversion conditions.

Organic micropollutants (OMPs) are commonly detected in municipal wastewater. Conventional activated sludge processes partially remove these compounds, allowing them to enter receiving waters and pose ecological risks. Biotransformation, governed by microbial community composition and activity, is the main pathway for OMP removal. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS), with its distinct structure and microbial communities compared to conventional activated sludge, has emerged as a promising alternative. Full-scale AGS reactors contain predominately large granules (>1 mm), alongside medium (0.2-1 mm),

Overnight stagnation of drinking water in household taps induces microbial growth and changes in community composition.

Drinking water quality is routinely monitored in the distribution network but not inside households at the point of consumption. Fluctuating temperatures, residence times (stagnation), pipe materials and decreasing pipe diameters can promote bacterial growth in buildings. To test the influence of stagnation in households on the bacterial cell concentrations and composition, water was sampled from 10 separate households after overnight stagnation and after flushing the taps. Cell concentrations, measured by flow cytometry, increased (2-3-fold) in all water samples after stagnation. This increas

Nitrogen recycling from fuel-extracted algal biomass: residuals as the sole nitrogen source for culturing Scenedesmus acutus.

In this study, the reuse of nitrogen from fuel-extracted algal residues was investigated. The alga Scenedesmus acutus was found to be able to assimilate nitrogen contained in amino acids, yeast extracts, and proteinaceous alga residuals. Moreover, these alternative nitrogen resources could replace nitrate in culturing media. The ability of S. acutus to utilize the nitrogen remaining in processed algal biomass was unique among the promising biofuel strains tested. This alga was leveraged in a recycling approach where nitrogen is recovered from algal biomass residuals that remain after lipids ar

An Unusual Case of Severe Trismus After Craniotomy.

Myositis ossificans Traumatica (MOT) is a non-neoplastic, heterotrophic ossifying disease process in muscle and soft tissue rarely involving the craniofacial area. Treatment depends on the extent of ossification and functional limitations. We present the first case of MOT of the temporalis muscle following neurosurgical intervention. This is the case of a 28-year-old male patient who underwent numerous neurosurgical interventions and reported progressive trismus following these interventions. Imaging demonstrated a right temporal region radio-opacity consistent with ossification of the tempora

Genomic Analysis Unravels Reduced Inorganic Sulfur Compound Oxidation of Heterotrophic Acidophilic Acidicaldus sp. Strain DX-1.

Although reduced inorganic sulfur compound (RISC) oxidation in many chemolithoautotrophic sulfur oxidizers has been investigated in recent years, there is little information about RISC oxidation in heterotrophic acidophiles. In this study, Acidicaldus sp. strain DX-1, a heterotrophic sulfur-oxidizing acidophile, was isolated. Its genome was sequenced and then used for comparative genomics. Furthermore, real-time quantitative PCR was performed to identify the expression of genes involved in the RISC oxidation. Gene encoding thiosulfate: quinone oxidoreductase was present in Acidicaldus sp. stra

Long-Term Nitrogen Removal Performance and Microbial Analysis in a SNAD-Based MBBR at Room Temperature.

In recent years, the simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (SNAD) process has attracted considerable attention due to its advantages such as low energy consumption and low sludge production. This study investigated the long-term performance and microbial mechanisms of a single-stage moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) employing the SNAD process for treating real domestic sewage at room temperature. A pre-carbon adsorption unit (reactor A) reduced the influent C/N ratio from 5.68:1 to 3.13:1, enabling efficient nitrogen removal in reactor B. Results demonstrated that di

Riding the Storm: Microeukaryote Community Responses to Hurricane Disturbance.

Sandy beaches are dynamic ecosystems where terrestrial and marine organisms coexist, resulting in diverse communities where microeukaryotes (protists, microalgae, and meiofauna) are key drivers. Understanding their diversity patterns and responses to stressors is essential for elucidating ecological processes, yet information on this subject remains limited. Herein, microeukaryotic diversity in a sandy beach in Acapulco, Guerrero, was analyzed via ITS1 metabarcoding assessing community structure changes following hurricane Otis. Overall, the number of ASVs decreased substantially from 260 befo

Microorganisms uniquely capture and predict stony coral tissue loss disease and hurricane disturbance impacts on US Virgin Island reefs.

Coral reef ecosystems are now commonly affected by major climate and disease disturbances. Disturbance impacts are typically recorded using reef benthic cover, but this may be less reflective of other ecosystem processes. To explore the potential for reef water-based disturbance indicators, we conducted a 7-year time series on US Virgin Island reefs where we examined benthic cover and reef water nutrients and microorganisms from 2016 to 2022, which included two major disturbances: hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 and the stony coral tissue loss disease outbreak starting in 2020. The disease o

Novel strategy for treating high salinity oilfield produced water: Pyrite-activated peroxymonosulfate coupled with heterotrophic ammonia assimilation.

Existing conventional biological treatment techniques face numerous limitations in effectively removing total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and ammonia (NH4+-N) from oilfield-produced water (OPW), highlighting the pressing need for innovative pre-oxidation and biological treatment processes. In this study, a pyrite-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-coupled heterotrophic ammonia assimilation (HAA) system was established to achieve satisfactory system performance for OPW treatment. Pyrite sustained-release Fe2+-activated PMS was used to produce SO4•- and •OH, and 71.0 % of TPHs were effectively

The Scientific Legacy of the CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program.

The CARIACO (Carbon Retention in a Colored Ocean) Ocean Time-Series Program station, located at 10.50°N, 64.66°W, observed biogeochemical and ecological processes in the Cariaco Basin of the southwestern Caribbean Sea from November 1995 to January 2017. The program completed 232 monthly core cruises, 40 sediment trap deployment cruises, and 40 microbiogeochemical process cruises. Upwelling along the southern Caribbean Sea occurs from approximately November to August. High biological productivity (320-628 g C m-2 y-1) leads to large vertical fluxes of particulate organic matter, but only approx

Biological Cr(VI) removal coupled with biomass growth, biomass decay, and multiple substrate limitation.

In this work, a mathematical model for the biological reduction of Cr(VI), carbon and nitrogen sources consumption, and biomass growth under fully aerobic conditions was developed. The model comprises three types of aerobic heterotrophic cells (non-growing cells, growing cells with chromate reductase activity, and growing cells that have lost the chromate reductase activity), and five soluble compounds (organic substrate, ammonia nitrogen, non-metabolizable soluble products, dissolved oxygen, and hexavalent chromium). Two processes are considered responsible for the reduction of Cr(VI). The fi

Biofilm Source Shapes the Tolerance to Short-Term Ciprofloxacin Exposure.

Periphytic biofilms are key mediators of freshwater ecosystem processes but are increasingly exposed to anthropogenic stressors. We compared biofilms sampled upstream and downstream of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent, two source communities presumed to differ in prior exposure to wastewater-associated press disturbance, to examine differences in tolerance to ciprofloxacin (CIP) exposure. We assessed biomass, photosynthetic pigments and fatty acid (FA) profiles as well as microbial community structure using qPCR and metabarcoding. Downstream-sourced biofilms exhibited higher biomas

The microbial community composition and potential for carbon sequestration differences among mudflats with and without biofilm colonization.

Mudflats play an important role in coastal carbon cycling. The colonization of diatom-dominated microphytobenthic biofilms and associated heterotrophic microbial communities, affects the biogeochemical cycling in mudflats. Yet, the influence of biofilm colonization on the microbial communities and organic matter profiles in mudflats remains poorly understood. Here, 84 samples were collected in different seasons, locations and depths with/without biofilms in tidal flats of Zhejiang, China, and a multiparametric analysis was performed on environmental factors, microbial communities and dissolved

Redox-stratified macromolecule degradation supports microbial survival in the oligotrophic Kermadec Trench sediments.

Kermadec Trench is a hadal ecosystem in the South Pacific with the water depth 10,047 m. The trench bottom harbors a highly active and populated microbial community, despite the surface sediment is characterized as extremely pressurized, oligotrophic and with low oxygen concentration. It is intriguing, as well as technically challenging, to investigate the microbial adaptation strategies therein. Here we performed the in situ RNA fixation on sediment samples with the assistant of Fendouzhe manned submersible, to approach natural status of microbial metabolisms on both genomic and transcriptomi

Continuous Valorization of Carbon Dioxide into the Fine Chemical Ectoine by Hydrogenovibrio marinus: A New Strategy for Pharmaceutical Production.

Current challenges in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, such as ectoine production, include high operational costs and limited availability. Transitioning to processes that valorize renewable carbon sources like CO2 into ectoine can make production more sustainable and accessible to the economy and society. However, cell platforms that produce ectoine with CO2 still require bioprocess optimization and resilient microorganisms able to continuously maintain high ectoine yields and CO2 removals. A comprehensive screening of cultivation and operational strategies was conducted in six stirred-tank g

Elemental Sulfur and Organic Matter Amendment Drive Alkaline pH Neutralization and Mineral Weathering in Iron Ore Tailings Through Inducing Sulfur Oxidizing Bacteria.

Mineral weathering and alkaline pH neutralization are prerequisites to the ecoengineering of alkaline Fe-ore tailings into soil-like growth media (i.e., Technosols). These processes can be accelerated by the growth and physiological functions of tolerant sulfur oxidizing bacteria (SOB) in tailings. The present study characterized an indigenous SOB community enriched in the tailings, in response to the addition of elemental sulfur (S0) and organic matter (OM), as well as resultant S0oxidation, pH neutralization, and mineral weathering in a glasshouse experiment. The addition of S0 was found to

Comparative evaluation of nitrogen removal in moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) treating anaerobic digestion effluent: effect of external carbon source and biocarrier autopsy.

This study investigated nitrogen removal performance in an anoxic/oxic moving bed biofilm reactor (A/O MBBR) using two external carbon sources: food waste condensate (FWC) and methanol (MeOH). FWC supported effective denitrification (95.4 ± 4.2 %) due to the enrichment of diverse heterotrophic denitrifiers, including Thauera, Paracoccus, and Azospira, despite its chemical complexity. However, nitrification efficiency in the FWC-fed system was lower than in the MeOH-fed system (5.5 % lower), likely due to inhibitory organic constituents and fewer nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrolance
