[Diagnostic Errors in Medicine].

The recognition of diagnostic errors in everyday practice can help improve patient safety. The most common diagnostic errors are the cognitive errors, followed by system-related errors and no fault errors. The cognitive errors often result from mental shortcuts, known as heuristics. The rate of cognitive errors can be reduced by a better understanding of heuristics and the use of checklists. The autopsy as a retrospective quality assessment of clinical diagnosis has a crucial role in learning from diagnostic errors. Diagnostic errors occur more often in primary care in comparison to hospital s

Ultrasound to reduce cognitive errors in the ED.

Emergency medicine setting is intrinsically prone to a greater risk of medical errors than other specialties. Cognitive errors are particularly frequent when the clinical decision-making process heavily relies on heuristics. These could be defined as "mental shortcuts," which enable physicians to rapidly overcome both time and efforts required by the normative reasoning. Our article demonstrates how emergency physicians' thinking may be affected by failed heuristics, through the description of 3 real clinical cases. We aimed to show how the proper use of a widespread and easy-learning technolo

No food left behind: foraging route choices among free-ranging Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in a multi-destination array at the Awajishima Monkey Center, Japan.

Animals must make route choices every day when moving through their habitat while foraging. Choosing an optimal route can be cognitively costly, and primates and other animals have been shown to use simple heuristics, "rules of thumb", to make foraging route choices. We investigated the potential use of heuristics among foraging free-ranging Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) during solitary foraging trials. We also investigated the potential influence of individual variables (age and sex) and social variables (presence in the central group, presence of potential inter- and intraspecific compet

Cognitive biases and decision making in gambling.

Heuristics and cognitive biases can occur in reasoning and decision making. Some of them are very common in gamblers (illusion of control, representativeness, availability, etc.). Structural characteristics and functioning of games of chance favor the appearance of these biases. Two experiments were conducted with nonpathological gamblers. The first experiment was a game of dice with wagers. In the second experiment, the participants played two bingo games. Specific rules of the games favored the appearance of cognitive bias (illusion of control) and heuristics (representativeness and availabi

The role of prefrontal cortex in visuo-spatial planning: A repetitive TMS study.

The visuo-spatial planning process is based on an "opportunistic" combination of heuristics and strategies, carried out in small units during the execution of plans. In order to investigate the functional role of the prefrontal cortex in heuristic switching, 42 healthy controls performed a labyrinth crossing task (the Maps Test). During this computerized version of the Travelling Salesperson Problem, subjects had to decide which order of locations optimizes total travel time and distance. This task was performed with and without 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), which e

Application of Deep Reinforcement Learning Algorithm in Uncertain Logistics Transportation Scheduling.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Nowadays, finding the optimal route for vehicles through online vehicle path planning is one of the main problems that the logistics industry needs to solve. Due to the uncertainty of the transportation system, especially the last-mile delivery problem of small packages in uncertain logistics transportation, the calculation of logistics vehicle routing planning becomes more complex than before. Most of the existing solutions are less applied to new technologies such as machine learning, and most of them use a heuristic algorithm. This kind of solution not only needs to set a lot of constraints

Gamified Problem Gambling and Psychological Distress: The Mediated-Moderated Roles of Cognitive and Economic Motives.

Economic and non-economic motives for gambling may amplify anxiety and depression among young adults. On the grounds that online gambling is highly addictive, it is imperative to assess significant contributory factors in gambling that aggravate financial harm and psychological distress. The study examines gamified problem gambling and psychological distress among young adults in Ghanaian universities. The study further explores the mediating role of cognitive biases and heuristics as well as financial motive for gambling between gamified problem gambling and psychological distress. Through a

Decision-making and cancer screening: a qualitative study of older adults with multiple chronic conditions.

OBJECTIVE: To understand how older persons with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) approach decisions about cancer screening. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted interviews with adults >65 years old with at least two chronic conditions who were taking ≥five medications daily. Patients were first asked how age and multimorbidity influence their cancer screening decisions. After showing them an educational prompt that explained the relationship between life expectancy and the benefits of cancer screening, respondents were then asked about screening in the context of specific health scenarios. A novel metaheuristic optimizer GPSed via artificial intelligence for reliable economic dispatch.

Recently, meta-heuristic optimization algorithms have enhanced resource efficiency, facilitated informed decision-making, and addressed complex problems involving multiple variables and constraints in engineering and science fields. However, numerous handicaps are reported on the performance of a quite number of these optimizers, such as local solution trapping, slow convergence and the requirements for elevated storage and computation capability. This article proposes a novel, simple, and elaborate remedy for the reported deficiencies of meta-heuristic optimizers. This deficiency is accomplis

Decision making: How the past guides the future in frontal cortex.

Our judgments of our environment are often shaped by heuristics and prior experience. New research shows that the resulting biases are encoded, and combined with new sensory input, by groups of neurons in the frontal cortex during decisions under uncertainty.

From recognition to decisions: extending and testing recognition-based models for multialternative inference.

The recognition heuristic is a noncompensatory strategy for inferring which of two alternatives, one recognized and the other not, scores higher on a criterion. According to it, such inferences are based solely on recognition. We generalize this heuristic to tasks with multiple alternatives, proposing a model of how people identify the consideration sets from which they make their final decisions. In doing so, we address concerns about the heuristic's adequacy as a model of behavior: Past experiments have led several authors to conclude that there is no evidence for a noncompensatory use of re

When the rules break down: how nephrologists navigate diagnostic complexity in real-world practice.

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic reasoning in nephrology requires clinicians to navigate between competing heuristics: Occam's razor, which favours a single unifying diagnosis, and Hickam's dictum, which recognises that patients may harbour multiple simultaneous conditions. In a specialty defined by systemic complexity, the conditions under which nephrologists shift between these frameworks, and the structural forces that shape those shifts, are not well understood. This study investigated how nephrologists develop and deploy diagnostic heuristics across three intersecting domains: medical training, ind

Behavioral Economics Interventions in Clinical Decision Support Systems.

Background Clinical decision support (CDS) systems can improve safety and facilitate evidence-based practice. However, clinical decisions are often affected by the cognitive biases and heuristics of clinicians, which is increasing the interest in behavioral and cognitive science approaches in the medical field. Objectives This review aimed to identify decision biases that lead clinicians to exhibit irrational behaviors or responses, and to show how behavioral economics can be applied to interventions in order to promote and reveal the contributions of CDS to improving health care quality.Method

The misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder as a psychotic disorder: some of its causes and their influence on therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Looking at chart records bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed as a psychotic disorder but no study has ever systematically looked into the reasons. One reason for misdiagnoses could be that clinicians use heuristics like the prototype approach in routine practice instead of strictly adhering to the diagnostic criteria. Using an experimental approach we investigated if the use of heuristics can explain when a diagnosis of psychotic disorder is given instead of bipolar disorder. We systematically varied information about the presence or absence of specific symptoms, i.e. hallucinat

All Models are Wrong, Some are Annotated: Automating Metadata in Biomedical Repositories.

OBJECTIVE: High-quality metadata is essential for scientific discovery, yet sparse annotations in rapidly growing repositories leave many biologically relevant details uncaptured. We evaluated whether large language models (LLMs) can accurately infer ion channel and receptor subtype metadata from source code in a neuroscience repository. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We extracted 5,133 model files from ModelDB. A subset of 1,100 was manually annotated; 253 were held out for testing, and the remainder split into training (80%) and validation (20%) sets. LLM-based approaches (GPT-5.2 and GPT-mini) wer

Beyond the experience: Detection of metamemorial regularities.

We examined the mechanisms involved in the development of the easily learned, easily remembered (ELER) heuristic in three groups of young children (4-5 years, 6-7 years, and 8-9 years). A trial-to-acquisition procedure was used to evaluate how much these children's judgment of learning depended on the ELER heuristic. Moreover, a new experimental paradigm, composed of six phases-a pretest, four training phases, and a posttest-was employed to implicitly influence the validity of the ELER association that underlies this metacognitive rule. Results revealed that the ELER heuristic develops early (

Finding maximum colorful subtrees in practice.

In metabolomics and other fields dealing with small compounds, mass spectrometry is applied as a sensitive high-throughput technique. Recently, fragmentation trees have been proposed to automatically analyze the fragmentation mass spectra recorded by such instruments. Computationally, this leads to the problem of finding a maximum weight subtree in an edge-weighted and vertex-colored graph, such that every color appears, at most once in the solution. We introduce new heuristics and an exact algorithm for this Maximum Colorful Subtree problem and evaluate them against existing algorithms on rea

Serum sepsis, not sickness.

Rarely taught in medical schools, clinical reasoning is the ability to discern the important from the unimportant and to arrive at accurate and efficient clinical conclusions. Identifying errors in reasoning is difficult; however, undetected clinical reasoning errors can have exponential consequences. As quality and patient safety come into focus, identifying and preventing clinical reasoning errors have become imperative. The authors present a case of a man sent for admission from a subspecialty clinic diagnosed with infliximab-induced serum sickness. Not countering the expert's diagnosis, in
