Host plant preference and suitability of Systena frontalis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in container ornamental nursery systems.

Systena frontalis (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is an economically important pest of container-grown ornamental plants in the eastern United States. Adults cause characteristic shot-hole feeding injury that reduces plant marketability. Although growers report widespread damage across multiple ornamentals, information on adult host plant preference remains inconsistent and largely anecdotal. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine adult feeding preference and host suitability of S. frontalis on 12 major ornamental plant species grown in greenhouses using no-choice and multi-choice

The hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves of red mombin (Spondias purpurea L.) is more effective in accelerating ulcer healing than preventing them in rodents.

This study evaluated the anti-ulcer effects of the hydroalcoholic extract from the leaves of Spondias purpurea L. (SPHE). The gastroprotection was assessed using acidified ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in mice given orally with the vehicle, carbenoxolone (200 mg/kg), or SPHE (10-1.000 mg/kg). The extract's healing activity was evaluated using acetic acid-induced ulcers in rats treated with vehicle, omeprazole (20 mg/kg), or SPHE (3-300 mg/kg). Histological and biochemical analyses were done in ulcerated tissue from both models. SPHE antisecretory action was tested in pylorus-ligated rats. The

Roselle Precision Drying: Comparative Performance of Smart Rotary Drum and Solar Dryers.

Roselle calyces are regarded as a source of anthocyanins and many nutrients. Despite their high therapeutic and nutritional value, fresh calyces are highly perishable, necessitating efficient preservation methods. Traditional drying, although cost-effective, often degrades heat-sensitive nutrients due to uncontrolled conditions. This study evaluates the efficiency of two precision drying technologies, specifically a hybrid smart solar dryer (HSSD) and a smart hot air rotary drum dryer (DD), at temperatures of 30°C, 40°C, and 50°C. The investigation focuses on drying kinetics and energy consump

Direct Depolymerization Coupled to Liquid Extraction Surface Analysis-High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry for the Characterization of the Surface of Plant Tissues.

The cuticle, the outermost layer covering the epidermis of most aerial organs of land plants, can have a heterogeneous composition even on the surface of the same organ. The main cuticle component is the polymer cutin which, depending on its chemical composition and structure, can have different biophysical properties. In this study, we introduce a new on-surface depolymerization method coupled to liquid extraction surface analysis (LESA) high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for a fast and spatially resolved chemical characterization of the cuticle of plant tissues. The method is composed

Review of Malaysian medicinal plants with potential wound healing activity.

Wound is defined as the damage to biological tissues including skin, mucous membranes and organ tissues. The acute wound heals in less than 4 weeks without complications, while a chronic wound takes longer than 6 weeks to heal. Wound healing occurs in 4 phases, namely, coagulation, inflammatory, proliferative and remodeling phases. Triclosan and benzalkonium chloride are commonly used as skin disinfectants in wound healing. However, they cause allergic contact dermatitis and antibiotic resistance. Medicinal plants are widely studied due to the limited availability of wound healing agents. The

Effect of ethnomedicinal plants used in folklore medicine in Jordan as antibiotic resistant inhibitors on Escherichia coli.

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli occurs naturally in the human gut; however, certain strains that can cause infections, are becoming resistant to antibiotics. Multidrug-resistant E. coli that produce extended-spectrum beta lactamases (ESBLs), such as the CTX-M enzymes, have emerged within the community setting as an important cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bloodstream infections may be associated with these community-onsets. This is the first report testing the antibiotic resistance-modifying activity of nineteen Jordanian plants against multidrug-resistant E. coli. METHODS: The sus

Synthesis of cellulose impregnated copper nanoparticles as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for CN coupling reactions under mild conditions.

Highly efficient copper nanoparticles supported over nanocellulose have been prepared by a simple chemical reduction method. The cellulose was extracted from the inner stem of Hibiscus sabdariffa and used as a polymer matrix for the synthesis of copper nanoparticles. The formation of the nanoparticles was validated through different characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-vis spectroscopy (UV) and Energy dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX). Moreover the morphology of the cellulose supported copper nanoparticles was investiga

VIS-NIR-SWIR Proximal Spectroradiometry Coupled with Machine Learning and Deep Learning for Ornamental Plant Identification and Classification.

Non-destructive classification of ornamental plant material could improve greenhouse quality control, cultivar screening, and spectral phenotyping; however, most routine decisions still rely on visual inspection. We evaluated proximal VIS-NIR-SWIR spectroradiometry (400-2400 nm) for 900 balanced plant-level leaf or bract spectra representing nine ornamental classes from pothos, poinsettia, geranium, and hibiscus. The spectra formed a highly structured low-dimensional dataset, with the first three principal components explaining 97.11% of the total variance. Full-spectrum and edge-trimmed repre

Neuroprotective effects of anthocyanin- and proanthocyanidin-rich extracts in cellular models of Parkinson׳s disease.

Neuropathological evidence indicates that dopaminergic cell death in Parkinson׳s disease (PD) involves impairment of mitochondrial complex I, oxidative stress, microglial activation, and the formation of Lewy bodies. Epidemiological findings suggest that the consumption of berries rich in anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins may reduce PD risk. In this study, we investigated whether extracts rich in anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, or other polyphenols suppress the neurotoxic effects of rotenone in a primary cell culture model of PD. Dopaminergic cell death elicited by rotenone was suppressed by
