UNLABELLED: Several communities are implementing trauma-informed, community-level approaches focused on addressing/preventing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), yet most community resilience definitions from published articles are based on acute traumas. This scoping review aims to determine how community resilience is defined and operationalized within the context of chronic/complex traumas.
METHODS: We performed a rigorous, comprehensive literature search using multiple databases.
RESULTS: The 38 included articles addressed multiple types of chronic traumas, including historical trauma,

OBJECTIVE: Trauma and trauma-related health conditions are common during pregnancy, but there is little evidence and guidance on how doulas (trained lay birth assistants) can provide trauma-informed care. The purpose of this narrative review is to critique and synthesize the existing evidence for trauma-informed doula care and to offer guidelines for practice.
DESIGN: We conducted a narrative review of existing evidence in the peer-reviewed and gray literatures on trauma-informed care in maternity and perinatal settings including doula training curricula and community-based doula guidelines o

A 55-year-old Caucasian female presented with bilateral inferior altitudinal visual field defects which resulted from trauma suffered in an automobile accident. In addition, there was a bilateral reduction in visual acuities and bilateral optic disc pallor. Diagnostic and historical data suggested that the primary site of damage was at the occipital cortex. A subsequent bilateral anterior ischemic optic neuropathy process was also thought to have occurred.

An 18-year-old American Miniature Horse mare was presented with a complaint of a scleral swelling affecting the right eye and a history of suspected trauma 6 weeks prior to evaluation. Clinical findings included severe blepharospasm, a bulbous swelling of the dorsotemporal bulbar conjunctiva, and phthisis bulbi. Ocular ultrasound was recommended but declined. Enucleation was elected for the blind, painful eye and was performed standing. Gross and histopathologic examinations of the globe were consistent with extrusion of the lens to the episcleral space, which is classified as a traumatic phac

This commentary on Rubenstein et al. (2024) appreciates how they advance the debate on exposure therapy and best practices in posttraumatic stress disorder treatment. Their historical analysis, though, points to a way forward they fail to explore-reconceptualizing exposure as transtheoretical approach. This reconceptualization shows that diverse theoretical traditions converge on exposure/approach clinical practices, which should bolster our confidence in these interventions. Moreover, this reconceptualization could help address issues with provider uptake and patient dropout. Rubenstein and c

BACKGROUND: The analysis of circumstantial elements in post-mortem examinations is crucial for identifying perpetrators in unarmed close-range homicides. This study explores the forensic analysis of head trauma fatalities related to combat sports, blunt force trauma homicides, and traditional martial arts (TMA), aiming to bridge the gap between historical martial arts documentation and modern forensic pathology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic literature review and interdisciplinary analysis combining traditional forensic methods with the study of

After a hiatus of several decades, the concept of cold whole blood (WB) is being reintroduced into acute clinical trauma care in the United States. Initial implementation experience and data grew from military medical applications, followed by more recent development and data acquisition in civilian institutions. Anesthesiologists, especially those who work in acute trauma facilities, are likely to be presented with patients either receiving WB from the emergency department or may have WB as a therapeutic option in massive transfusion situations. In this focused review, we briefly discuss the

OBJECTIVE: Transgenerational trauma occurs when the effects of trauma transfer from one generation to future generations. While some individuals exposed to transgenerational trauma display resilience, shared resilience-promoting factors across diverse groups remain underexplored. This review applies the resilience portfolio model to identify shared protective factors across many cultures and contexts that promote resilience in offspring of those exposed to various traumatic events.

The well preserved skeleton of Joseph Huber, a very well-known historical character of the 19th century Munich, also nicknamed "Finessen-Sepperl", is the starting point of the reconstruction of life and death of this historical individual. He was known as a postilion d´amour (love's messenger) of the Royal Bavarian capital with numerous comments and anecdotes and a few biographical sketches that indicate he remained well until the last few years of his life where requests for his duties lessened. The skeleton shows a small-sized male individual with almost complete loss of teeth, but otherwise

Nurses and midwives deliver 24/7 care for complex biopsychosocial needs across the lifespan. The global shortage of nurses and midwives is a challenge for healthcare organisations, placing additional stress and symptoms of trauma on those who remain. Trauma-informed care is an organisational framework that embeds trauma awareness into healthcare policies and practices to prevent re-traumatisation and promote the well-being of patients and providers. Grounded in six core principles, it addresses the multifaceted effects of trauma in healthcare. Clinical supervision supports practitioner develop

Women in Victoria experience significantly higher rates of mental illness than men, particularly among culturally and racially marginalised women and those exposed to trauma, poverty, and family violence. Despite this, mental health services and research have historically relied on male-centred models, with mixed-gender inpatient settings often failing to provide safety or trauma-informed care for women. In response to the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System, the Women's Recovery Network (WReN) was established as a women-only, trauma-informed, and gender-affirming inpatient s

OBJECTIVES: The objective was to determine the interobserver agreement of historical and physical examination findings assessed during the emergency department (ED) evaluation of children with blunt abdominal trauma.
METHODS: This was a planned substudy of a multicenter, prospective cohort study of children younger than 18 years of age evaluated for blunt abdominal trauma. Patients were excluded if injury occurred more than 24 hours prior to evaluation or if computed tomography (CT) imaging was obtained at another hospital prior to transfer to a study site. Two clinicians independently record

Disorders and diseases of the toenails (onychial) in the older patient are often the focus of the primary foot complaints. They may be a result of the aging process, the end result of repetitive microtrauma or historical major trauma, a complication or related clinical change associated with a multiple system disease or condition, or a localized foot problem. This article details the symptoms of and problems associated with onychial disorders in the elderly.

According to the author, the assumption is made that in Ménière's disease, compensation should be paid in acoustic trauma cases. Ménière's disease is an aftereffect of noise exposure, even if the time lapse exceeds 10 years. A historical review of existing literature (from 1872 to 1958) shows no convincing evidence of this matter. Ten patients were chosen at random. All were exposed to noise and presented with vestibular dysfunction at a certain time.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate common presentations and expected outcomes in patients with traumatically induced otologic dysfunction.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review of patients who underwent otologic surgery for sequelae of otologic trauma over a 28-year period. Patients were stratified into major and minor trauma cohorts. Major trauma was designated as closed head injury with or without temporal bone fracture; lower-energy insults comprised the minor trauma group. Preoperative and postoperative audiograms were obtained and correlated with extent of injury.

AIM: Individuals at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis have been shown to experience more trauma than the general population. However, although the effects of trauma appear to impact some symptoms it does not seem to increase the risk of transition to psychosis. The aim of this article was to examine the prevalence of trauma, and its association with longitudinal clinical and functional outcomes in a large sample of CHR individuals.
METHODS: From the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study-3 (NAPLS-3) 690 CHR individuals and 91 healthy controls from nine study sites between 2015 and 20

BACKGROUND: Central and Eastern European (CEE) populations share historical challenges, including communist-era governance and post-transition changes, yet cross-national comparisons of trauma and stress related symptoms remain limited. This study examined trauma exposure, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and Complex PTSD (CPTSD) prevalence and symptom networks across five CEE countries.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 5070 adults from five CEE countries assessed trauma exposure using the International Trauma Exposure Measure (ITEM). Of these, 4012 (79.1%) reporting trauma completed

OBJECTIVES: Depression and negative symptoms have been associated with impaired Quality of life (QoL) in schizophrenia (SZ). However, childhood trauma may influence both QoL and depression in SZ patients, with consequences for the management of impaired QoL in SZ patients. The aim of the present study was to determine if childhood trauma was associated with impaired QoL in schizophrenia.
METHOD: A sample of 544 community-dwelling stabilized SZ patients enrolled in FACE-SZ cohort were utilized in this study (74.1% males, mean aged 32.3years, mean illness duration 10.6years). QoL was self-repor

This paper discusses the influence of Jean-Martin Charcot's views on Sigmund Freud's early theory of hysteria and the notion of psychical trauma. We consider the early history of both psychical trauma and male hysteria, for in Charcot's view traumatic hysteria and male hysteria are identical. Freud's two 1886 lectures on male hysteria, delivered after his return from Paris, are crucial to the subject because they present Freud's first impressions of Charcot and his teaching. Some of the ideas presented in the two lectures foreshadow Freud's later generalization of the etiological role of traum

The current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in a large cohort of military personnel exposed to combat-related psychological trauma as well as biomechanical trauma, including proximity to blast events. Historically, the long-term effects of both types of trauma have been viewed as having different neural substrates, with some controversy over the proper attribution of such symptoms evident after each of the major conflicts of the last century. Recently, great effort has been directed toward distinguishing which neuropsychiatric sequelae are due to which type of trauma. Of intere
