Pharmacies for pain and trauma in ancient Greece.

PURPOSE: To summarize pharmacies for pain and trauma in ancient Greece, to present several pharmaceutical/therapeutical methods reported in myths and ancient texts, and to theorize on the medical explanation upon which these pharmacies were used. METHOD: A thorough literature search was undertaken in PubMed and Google Scholar as well as in physical books in libraries to summarize the pharmacies and pain practices used for trauma in ancient Greece. RESULTS: Archeological findings and historical texts have revealed that humans have always suffered from diseases and trauma that were initially m

The skull of Chios: trepanation in Hippocratic medicine.

Cranial trepanation is the oldest neurosurgical operation and its roots date back to prehistory. For many centuries, religion and mysticism were strongly linked to the cause of diseases, and trepanation was associated with superstitions such as releasing evil spirits from inside the skull. The Hippocratic treatise "On injuries of the head" was therefore a revolutionary work, as it presented a systematic approach to the management of cranial trauma, one that was devoid of spiritual elements. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of skeletal findings that confirm that the practice of tr

First evidence of enterobiasis in ancient Egypt.

The oldest and most common parasite for which we have direct evidence, in the New World, is Enterobius vernicularis. Numerous archaeological sites, especially in the arid American southwest, have yielded fecal samples positive for pinworm ova, some of these dating back 10,000 yr. Reports of pinworm from the Old World are scarce. This article reports the first evidence of pinworm infection from Roman-occupied (30 BC-AD 395) Egypt.

[Diseases and their treatment in Plato's depiction on the background of views of Hippocratic physicians].

Conception of biological nature of a man included in "Timajos" did not limit itself to presentation of the outline of anatomy and of physiology, but also touched on problems connected with origin of diseases and their treatment. Explanation of mentioned issues was based on the idea of a man as an element of the universe. Plato subscribed opinion that body as all the universe, consisted of four basic primeval elements. Excess or shortage of one of them, exchange of place with other elements or taking over another species property caused disturbances inside the organism leading to diseases. Plat

Aristotle and Galen on sex difference and reproduction: a new approach to an ancient rivalry.

[I]n contrast to Aristotle's male oriented explanation of procreation the Galenic was 'feminist' inasmuch as both sexes were presented as contributing equally in conception and accordingly both had to experience pleasure... Anatomically, the two sexes were presented in Galenic accounts as complementary, the difference being that the man's genitalia were on the outside and the woman's on the inside. The clitoris was likened to the penis and the ovaries considered 'testicles' or 'stones' that produced seed. The male seed was, it is true, depicted by Galenists as superior in having 'spiritual' qu

[Traditional medicine in ancient Greece (coexistence of Asclepian art and Hippocratic medicine)].

Ancient Greece created two types of medicine: priestly-religious one with god Asclepios and temple treatment and other rational one, formed by Hippocrates. Both coexisting types of medicine represented two non-antagonistic alternatives of treatment for the patients. In spite of differences between both kinds of ancient Greek medicine we have no evidence either of a collaboration between Asclepian priests and Hippocratic physicians, or of any mutual misunderstanding or hostility, Asclepios followers respected the tradition, believed in the divine descent of their profession, but remained loyal

[Gallstones and "liver obstruction" in medical texts of antiquity].

INTRODUCTION: Gallstones are rarely mentioned in the medical texts of antiquity. The physician, Alexander of Tralles mentions-for the first time-stones in the gallbladder as a possible cause for obstructive jaundice. This designation is found in his textbook on medicine under the heading "obstruction of the liver". Based on that observation, we describe the ancient history of hepatic obstruction and investigate the connection with the rare reference of gallstones in the medical texts of antiquity. METHODS: First, we evaluated the medico-historical literature on bile-stones and liver obstructi

Aelius Aristides in the Context of Asclepian Healing Records.

This study traces the typological and historical evolution of Asclepian healing narratives by conducting a comparative analysis of three pivotal texts: the 4th-century BCE public healing inscriptions (Iamata) from the Asclepian sanctuary in Epidauros, the Roman inscription of Poplius Granius Rufus from Lebena in Crete, and the 2nd-century CE autobiographical text, Sacred Tales (Hieroi Logoi), by Aelius Aristides. While Asclepian worship maintains a structural continuity through the shared spiritual media of incubation and divine dreams, it underwent a profound narrative transformation as it in

[Analysis on origin and evolution of mumps].

There was a preliminary recognition on mumps during the Qin-Han to Sui-Tang dynasty, laying a foundation for the scholastic development on this topic in later generations. The title of this disease was identified in Song-Jin-Yuan dynasty with gradual deepening on its principle-method-formula-medication system, a great progress of recognition as compared with the previous ages. In the Ming-Qing dynasty, the recognition became even more systematic, with certain breakthrough in the system of principle-method-formula-medication. In modern age, the experiences were inherited and developed to integr

Disease concepts and the logic of classes.

Four different disease concepts are examined. In pre-scientific times, diseases were regarded as independent entities outside and inside the body of patients. This view is still alive in such expressions as "disease carrier' and similar idioms. Sydenham's disease entity was akin to a Platonic "idea'; namely as "species', "substantial form' or "essence' which had a singular independent existence in some metaphysical realm. Therefore, the talk at the time was that a patient suffered from, say, "the' pox. Virchow's disease entities were semi-independent parasitic parts in the bodies of different

Intestinal helminths as a biomolecular complex in archaeological research.

Enteric helminths are common parasites in many parts of the world and in the past were much more widespread both geographically and socially. Many enteric helminths are relatively long-lived in the human host, often benign or of low pathogenicity while producing large numbers of environmentally resistant eggs voided in the faeces or found associated with individual remains (skeletons and mummies). The combination of helminth characters offers opportunities to the field of historical pathogen research that are quite different to that of some of the more intensively studied high impact pathogens

History of arthritis and bone rarefaction evidence from paleopathology onwards.

Review of medical and archaeological papers reveals that osteoarthritis has been common in humans and hominids since Paleolithic times. In the British Isles, there was a particularly high prevalence in remains from Romano-British and Saxon burials suggesting that, whatever genetic factors there may have been, there was an extremely high level of physical activity. The prevalence of the condition was lower in late Medieval times; and, in at least one study of subjects from the 18th and 19th centuries, lower than in the current population. In early times, there was a reduction in bone density wh

Intentional incisions on Neolithic Obsidian arrowheads from Central Anatolia: A techno-functional and iconographic approach.

Incised obsidian arrowheads form a rare and geographically restricted artifact class, known exclusively from Neolithic Central Anatolia between the late 8th and 7th millennia BCE. These artifacts, marked by deliberate incisions, have been variously interpreted as symbolic or identity-related. This study presents a comprehensive techno-functional and iconographic analysis of eleven newly identified specimens from Tepecik-Çiftlik (Cappadocia, Türkiye), adding to the regional corpus of 43 known examples. The incised arrowheads were found in dwelling sites, a chipped stone workshop, and during sur
