BACKGROUND: The relationships between hoarding disorder (HD) and other neurological and psychiatric disorders remain largely unknown. Although psychiatric burden in those with HD is high, less is known about neurological disorders. Furthermore, which disorders are primarily associated with HD vs which can be better explained via a relationship with another disorder has not been determined. To address these questions, we examined comorbidity patterns of psychiatric and neurological disorders in a large online registry of adults using network analyses.
METHODS: We first examined psychiatric com

The formation of intense emotional attachments to objects, difficulty parting with possessions, and the extreme accumulation of clutter are key features of Hoarding Disorder (HD). Although substantial literature implicates processes such as dysfunctional beliefs and maladaptive emotional cycles in HD, little is known about the vulnerability factors that lead to their development and hoarding symptomatology. The current review sought to systematically collate and integrate findings from studies investigating the relationship between hoarding symptoms and three proposed vulnerability factors: i)

Hoarding disorder has become an official disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Hoarding disorder affects approximately 1.5% to 5% of the general population, and there is no known literature that has examined the prevalence of hoarding disorder among homeless populations or those living in supported housing, although hoarding problems can jeopardize their housing situation. This study used the Clutter Image Rating to estimate the prevalence of possible hoarding behavior among 660 adults living in supported housing. The results indicate tha

Previous meta-analysis has reported the rate of reliable and clinically significant changes in hoarding disorder (HD) after cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) based on the classical CBT model of HD, as between 42% and 25%. However, in this analysis, different types of therapy (group vs individual, G-CBT and I-CBT, respectively), different providers (psychologist vs nonpsychologist), and different diagnosis (HD vs hoarding behaviour) were analysed together. Hence, it remains unclear if reported rate of changes was due to limits of the CBT model of HD or due to the fact that different applicati

UNLABELLED: A growing number of studies have highlighted impairments in the ability of individuals with autism spectrum disorders to recall specific, personally experienced material. These difficulties have been related to underlying problems with autonoetic consciousness, namely the subjective awareness of one's own existence in subjective time. The current paper describes the manifestation of these difficulties in three individuals diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. For the people described, lifelong collecting and hoarding behaviours appeared to serve the function of constituting and maintai

BACKGROUND: Factor analyses indicate that hoarding symptoms constitute a distinctive dimension of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), usually associated with higher severity and limited insight. The aim was to compare demographic and clinical features of OCD patients with and without hoarding symptoms.
METHOD: A cross sectional study was conducted with 1001 DSM-IV OCD patients from the Brazilian Research Consortium of Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (CTOC), using several instruments. The presence and severity of hoarding symptoms were determined using the Dimensional Yale-Brown Obses

Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) increase food hoarding, but not food intake, after a fast. Because the physiological mechanisms underlying these changes in food hoarding are virtually unknown, we sought insight into these mechanisms by allowing hamsters to self-select their diet from food sources varying in macronutrient composition and caloric density ("dietary wisdom"). Therefore, the effects of food deprivation length on diet self-selection were tested in adult female hamsters after adaptation to three composite diets: sunflower seeds (SS), pellet chow (PC), and rabbit chow (RC). Objective: Hoarding disorder is a chronic and progressive psychiatric disorder that often begins in adolescence and early adulthood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of hoarding severity on college students' psychosocial functioning and possible methods of early intervention. Participants: Undergraduate students (N = 363) at a large public university in the United States. Methods: Participants completed a self-report battery that included their parental history of clutter, perceptions about possible interventions for clutter, and standardized measures of hoarding severit

This study aimed to investigate the relationships between hoarding behaviors, autism characteristics, and demographic factors in adults diagnosed with high-functioning ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). A total of 112 adults, aged 18-35, with high-functioning ASD completed self-reported assessments on hoarding (Savings Inventory-Revised; SI-R) and autism traits (Autism-Spectrum Quotient; AQ). Additionally, demographic data was gathered. Correlation and regression analyses were performed. The findings revealed positive correlations between hoarding and overall autism traits. Autism quotient scores

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with hoarding disorder are more likely to be overweight or obese than the general population for unknown reasons.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty-nine individuals (Hoarding Group: n = 63; Control Group: n = 66) completed self-report measures and were offered snacks in a tidy and a cluttered environment in a counterbalanced order. Groups were based on the self-reporting of high or low hoarding symptoms.
RESULTS: The hoarding group reported being less able to use their kitchen and prepare food at home and experiencing more impulsivity, distress intolerance and problemat

Hoarding behaviours are highly stigmatised and often hidden. People with problematic hoarding behaviours have a higher rate of mental health and other healthcare and social services utilisation. Hoarding is a community health problem, one factor being housing insecurity. Hoarding behaviours represent significant burden to housing providers, impact the community and dealing with it involves multiple community agencies. This study with a city council in England with a large housing stock (over 14,000 properties) in summer 2021 sought to understand the nature, circumstances and extent that hoardi

Hoarding is defined as the acquisition of, and failure to discard, possessions of little use or value to others, usually associated with a significant degree of clutter in the individual's home. We describe a case of a woman who died from a combined traumatic and confined space asphyxia, after being trapped under some of the objects amassed in her apartment. The event was considered to be accidental; by taking into account the information gathered during assessment of the scene, we believe that the accident took place while entering or exiting the apartment. It appears that the woman, who was

Hoarding behavior, long considered a symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000), has recently garnered significant attention and has only begun to be more carefully studied and understood. Recent research reveals that hoarding is frequently comorbid with anxiety, depression, and other diagnoses, including OCD. The DSM-5 Working Group on Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum, Posttraumatic, and Dissociative Disorders is currently working to determine appropriate placement of hoarding in the DSM-5 (

Hoarding frequently occurs in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and some evidence suggests that it constitutes a distinct OCD subtype, with genetic contributions. This study investigated differences between OCD patients with and without hoarding symptoms. Of the 473 OCD patients studied, 24% were classified as hoarders according to combined interviewer and self-ratings, which were validated with the Savings Inventory-Revised in a subsample. Hoarders suffered from significantly more severe OCD symptoms, (especially compulsions) and had greater impairment and dysphoria. Hoarders also had more

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to examine whether pediatric patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and hoarding symptoms differed in terms of clinical characteristics from pediatric OCD patients without hoarding symptoms.
METHOD: Eighty children and adolescents with OCD (range, 7-17 years) completed clinician-administered and parent- and child-report measures of OCD symptom severity, impairment, and emotional and behavioral symptoms.
RESULTS: Twenty-one youth endorsed significant hoarding symptoms. Relative to nonhoarders, youth with hoarding symptoms had worse insight, more

BACKGROUND: A group cognitive behavioural therapy (GCBT) protocol was developed for people with hoarding disorder (HD) as part of routine clinical care in a tertiary mental health Obsessive Compulsive service in Southwest London in 2014; to date 10 groups have been facilitated, and 71 people have been treated.
AIM: The aim of the report was to describe the GCBT programme and ascertain if it is effective in treating symptoms of HD.
METHOD: Each group cycle consisted of 11 or 12 × 2-hour group sessions, run on a closed group basis. A home-based assessment and a follow-up home visit was conduct

Hoarding disorder (HD) and Diogenes syndrome (DS) are challenging and multifaceted conditions that significantly impact patients and society. These disorders are characterized by excessive hoarding behaviors, often accompanied by multiple physical and mental comorbidities, diminished quality of life, and substantial public health challenges. Through the presentation of two case reports and a narrative review, this article revisits HD and DS, highlighting the need for clinical awareness, targeted management strategies, and further research in this field. The first case report describes a 35-yea

Hoarding disorder is a chronic disorder defined as the persistent difficulty in parting with possessions and the need to save items, regardless of their actual value. Severe hoarding has largely been a hidden clinical problem, and awareness has mostly been limited to voyeuristic depictions of the plight of hoarders in popular media. Approximately 28% to 32% of individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), especially the inattentive subtype, have been reported to have clinically significant hoarding. It has been hypothesized that patients with ADHD initially acquire objects

Excessive attachment towards possessions can be maladaptive because it can lead individuals to excessively acquire and save objects. Little is known about how attachment to objects develops and changes over time; however, interpersonal factors have been theorized to play a role. The current study examined whether interpersonal factors, specifically interpersonal attachment style and empathy, moderate changes in object attachment over time. A total of 145 participants with excessive acquiring and discarding difficulties rated their level of attachment to a novel object just after receiving it,

"Animal hoarding" or "compulsive hoarding of animals" is a psychiatric disease, which has important social implications and a profound influence on animal welfare. To date, this phenomenon has been little investigated and largely unexplored. The present study aims to systematically describe a case of animal hoarding, which remains unresolved. The report refers to a case of a woman suffering from animal hoarding that emerged in 2005. From March 2014 to December 2019, 450 animals were seized over nine different occasions. This disease had significant implications on the welfare of the animals co
