Evaluation of the In Vitro Wound-Healing Activity of Calabrian Honeys.

The healing of skin wounds and particularly chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, is still a clinical emergency. Despite the many therapeutic tools that are available so far, none seems to be really effective and safe. In this context, we highlighted the renewed wound healing activity of honey, a viscous aromatic and sweet food, by way of in vitro wound-healing assays, using the HaCaT cell line. Specifically, we investigated five monofloral or multifloral honeys from different Calabrian provinces using them as such or extracted (by Amberlite® or n-hexane and ethyl acetate). The chemica

Pheromones modulate responsiveness to a noxious stimulus in honey bees.

Pheromones are chemical substances released into the environment by an individual, which trigger stereotyped behaviors and/or physiological processes in individuals of the same species. Yet, a novel hypothesis has suggested that pheromones not only elicit innate responses but also contribute to behavioral plasticity by affecting the subjective evaluation of appetitive or aversive stimuli. To test this hypothesis, we exposed bees to three pheromonal components whose valence was either negative (i.e. associated with aversive events: isopentyl acetate and 2-heptanone) or positive (i.e. associated

The sting of a honey bee: An unusual subconjunctival foreign body.

Ocular foreign bodies (FBs) are often encountered in clinical practices. However, there are cases in which the presence of the FB is difficult to diagnose based on mere history taking and/or clinical examination. We herein present a case of unusual subconjunctival foreign body in the form of the sting of a honey bee in a 63-year-old farmer. This was removed from the superior forniceal subconjunctival space in toto with forceps under a microscope in the operation theater. This case emphasizes the need to elicit a complete history and a careful ocular examination with double eversion of the eyel

Effect of cedar honey in the treatment of oral lichen planus.

INTRODUCTION: Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a chronic mucocutaneous disease with an immunological etiology. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of cedar honey in the treatment of erosive- atrophic OLP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with a confirmed clinical and histopathologic diagnosis of OLP participated in this randomized clinical trial in Mashhad Dental School. Patients were randomly allocated into one of two groups. Both groups received standard OLP treatment (dexamethasone mouthwash 0.5 mg three times daily and fluconazole capsule 100 mg daily). The intervention group

Treatment of a venous leg ulcer with a honey alginate dressing.

The management of chronic wounds such as venous ulcers is a common and long-term issue with the aging population. Non-standard treatment that is both medically and financially effective needs to be identified. Honey has been used for its healing properties for centuries and has been used to successfully heal wounds including pressure-ulcers in our care facility. However, there is not much evidence for its use in treating venous ulcers. To this end, I trialed the use of a honey-impregnated alginate dressing on a man who had a long-standing history of venous ulcers on his leg with the aim of eva

Study of the presence of the spores of Clostridium botulinum in honey in Brazil.

The isolation of Clostridium botulinum from honey samples is described. Botulism is characterized as an intoxication provoked by ingestion of contaminated foods with this toxin. Infant botulism happens by the ingestion of spores of C. botulinum together with food that in special conditions of the intestinal tract, such as those present in babies of less than 1 year old, will allow the germination and colonization of the intestine with production and absorption of botulinic toxin. The samples were subjected to dilution and to a thermal shock and cultivated in modified CMM (Difco). Cultures were

A case of infant botulism associated with honey feeding in Italy.

A case of infant botulism in a 9 week-old female is described. A strain of C. botulinum type B was isolated from the feces of the baby. The epidemiologic study detected in a sample of home canned honey Clostridium botulinum spores of the same serotype that was isolated from the patient. The honey had been used only to sweeten the pacifier of the baby. This is the first case of infant botulism in Europe linked conclusively to honey.

Topical application of honey in treatment of abdominal wound disruption.

The usefulness of honey application as an alternative method of managing abdominal wound disruption was assessed. Fifteen patients whose wound disrupted after Caesarean section were treated with honey application and wound approximation by micropore tape instead of the traditional method of wound dressing with subsequent resuturing. We achieved excellent results in all the cases with complete healing within 2 weeks. Honey application is inexpensive, effective and avoids the need to resuture which also requires general anaesthesia.

Effect of medical-grade honey (L-Mesitran) for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia II: protocol for a multicentre cohort pilot study (HONEY FOR CIN II study).

INTRODUCTION: High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions are caused by persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) infections and are subdivided into cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) lesions: CIN II (moderate) and CIN III (severe). Current treatment options for CIN II include large loop excision of the transformation zone, imiquimod and expectant management. Each treatment option has its drawbacks, and therefore, a non-invasive treatment is desirable. Preliminary evidence shows that medical-grade honey (MGH) has antiviral activity and might be able to modulate the vaginal micro

The Role of Honey in Dental Caries Prevention: A Narrative Review.

Dental caries is a multifactorial infectious disease influenced by diet and dental biofilm activity, characterized by acid production from bacterial fermentation of dietary carbohydrates, with Streptococcus mutans playing a central role in its development. It remains one of the most prevalent noncommunicable diseases worldwide. In recent years, honey has emerged as a natural agent of interest in oral healthcare due to its antibacterial, antibiofilm, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. In vitro studies indicate that honey exerts a multifactorial antimicrobial effect mediated by hyd

Mad Honey Disease: A Rare Condition in an Unlikely Locale.

Background and Aims/Introduction: Mad honey disease is caused by consuming honey containing grayanotoxanes-neurotoxins found in certain species of Rhododendron plants. Mad honey, derived from the nectar of these plants, can cause significant cardiovascular and neurological symptoms. While most cases are reported in regions where it is produced, extensive travel among diverse expatriate communities in various global regions is one of the factors that may contribute to cases occurring in nonendemic areas. Other factors leading to its increased demand include the global demand for its recreationa

Antibiotics in honey: a comprehensive review on occurrence and analytical methodologies.

Honey is a food of great nutritional importance and has always been used for human consumption. The production of honey and other beekeeping products depends on the proper functioning of this extremely important sector, as it has a direct impact on other sectors such as agriculture. The decline in bee colony numbers has been linked, among other factors, to bacterial diseases affecting bees, including American and European foulbrood, and Nosema spp. disease. In this matter, prophylactic or therapeutic use of veterinary drugs in apiculture is common but can lead to their accumulation in bees and

Honey infused with herbs: A boon to cure pathological diseases.

Healing with herbs has been a common practice for ages. Nowadays, various infectious diseases like malaria, flu, hepatitis B; COVID-19, etc. are commonly spreading around the world as a consequence of environmental pollution and related consequences. These diseases are not well controlled by the present drug treatment. Antibiotics are failing because of bacterial resistance. Although people believe that herbal medicines are more effective and safer. Therefore, traditional herbal remedies have been recommended for treatment purposes throughout the world. They are often used in combination, fuse

Microplastics reach the brain and interfere with honey bee cognition.

Scientific research on the impact of microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial systems is still emerging, but it has confirmed adverse health effects in organisms exposed to plastics. Although recent studies have shown the toxicological effects of individual MPs polymers on honey bees, the effects of different polymer combinations on cognitive and behavioural performance remain unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated the effects of oral exposure to spherical MPs on cognitive performance and brain accumulation in the honey bee Apis mellifera. We evaluated the acute toxicity, after a two-d

Euthanasia of honey-bee colonies: Proposal of a standard method.

Honey bees are most often kept for production purposes. Sanitary, regulatory, or zootechnical circumstances may lead the beekeeper or the veterinarian to dispose of a honey-bee colony. Unfortunately and at present, no standard method of euthanasia exists, leaving the door open to many more or less acceptable practices. Based on a short survey of current practices in 8 countries, we list and rank these methods. Although imperfect, the sulfur dioxide technique appears to be the most efficient. We suggest that it should become the reference method to be taught and incorporated into veterinary and

Properties and use of a honey dressing and gel in wound management.

Wound management is a major clinical challenge and puts a significant financial burden on the NHS. Because of the rise in long-term conditions including diabetes, obesity and an ageing population, practitioners regularly encounter a wide variety of wound types. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in the use of medical-grade honey in the management of wounds. Honey is anti-inflammatory in action and has the capability to treat local infection, promote autolytic debridement, deodorise wounds and promote granulation tissue. Revamil is a recent addition to the range of honey d

Honey Bees and Environmental Stress: Toxicologic Pathology of a Superorganism.

As a eusocial species, Apis mellifera, the European honey bee, is effectively a superorganism-a group of genetically related individuals functioning as a collective unit. Because the unit of selection is the colony and not the individual, standard methods for assessing toxicologic pathology can miss colony-level responses to stress. For over a decade, US populations of honeybees have experienced severe annual losses attributed to a variety of environmental stressors varying temporally and geographically; differentiating among those stressors is accordingly a high priority. Social interactions
