Motherhood in crisis: lived experiences of mothers with babies admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit in Northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The neonatal period is a critical time for both the newborn and the parents, as they transition into parenthood. Mothers with babies admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) often experience emotional distress, uncertainty, separation from their babies, and disruption of expected maternal roles. In low-resource settings such as Northern Uganda, where neonatal care and psychosocial support services remain limited, little is known about the experiences of mothers with babies admitted to the NICU. This study explored the lived experiences of mothers with babies admitted to th

Failure to rescue in the surgical patient: a review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Evaluating patient outcomes is essential in a healthcare environment focused on quality. Mortality after surgery has been considered a useful quality metric. More important than mortality rate, failure to rescue (FTR) has emerged as a metric that is important and may be improveable. The purpose of this review is to define FTR, describe patient and hospital level factors that lead to FTR, and highlight possible solutions to this problem. RECENT FINDINGS: FTR is defined as a death following a complication. Depending on the patient population, FTR rates vary from less than 1%

A Data Ingestion Procedure towards a Medical Images Repository.

UNLABELLED: This article presents an ingestion procedure towards an interoperable repository called ALPACS (Anonymized Local Picture Archiving and Communication System). ALPACS provides services to clinical and hospital users, who can access the repository data through an Artificial Intelligence (AI) application called PROXIMITY. This article shows the automated procedure for data ingestion from the medical imaging provider to the ALPACS repository. The data ingestion procedure was successfully applied by the data provider (Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile, HCUCH) using a pseudo-ano

From the hospital to the community: reshaping the palliative care paradigm.

Palliative care (PC) has traditionally developed within hospital settings, shaped by biomedical models, specialist hierarchies, and episodic care delivery. However, demographic change, rising multimorbidity, patient preferences, and health system constraints increasingly challenge hospital-centric approaches. In contrast, improving the community palliative care model requires moving beyond the simple decentralization of services toward a more integrated, person-centered, and ethically grounded system of care. At its core, an effective community model must recognize the individuality of people

Priorities for Healthcare Systems Emergency Preparedness in Inpatient Settings Informed by COVID-19: An Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report.

This workshop identified a set of core system-level care delivery priorities that emerged during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic to assist global healthcare systems to respond to future similar emergencies using an informed and systematic approach. Led by a working group (n = 14) of nurses and physicians with diverse clinical and administrative backgrounds, we conducted a literature review of staffing, supplies, and systems in hospital inpatient settings to inform potential candidate priorities of COVID-19 care delivery challenges. We then used a modified Delphi consensus approach

A comparison of coronavirus disease 2019 and seasonal influenza surveillance in five European countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: In response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak that unfolded across Europe in 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) called for repurposing existing influenza surveillance systems to monitor COVID-19. This analysis aimed to compare descriptively the extent to which influenza surveillance systems were adapted and enhanced and how COVID-19 surveillance could ultimately benefit or disrupt routine influenza surveillance. METHODS: We used a previously developed framework in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom to describe COVID-19 surveillance and its imp

Discussion suppers as a means for community engagement.

PURPOSE: This paper describes how Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network (LVHHN), a large tertiary care urban hospital, used discussion suppers as a means for community engagement designed to lead to community health improvement. An overview of the implementation of the project is described. PROJECT: In 1996, with an awareness of the need to address population-based health improvement, the Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust and LVHHN undertook a multiyear, multidimensional effort to improve health and quality of life in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. Data were obtained via a series o

[Development and implementation of a regional medical collaboration platform for hematological malignancies].

To address the challenges of regional collaboration in the treatment of hematologic malignancies, we conducted a prospective clinical study of a healthcare communication platform (Dr2GO®) designed to ensure seamless continuity of care by streamlining inter-hospital transfer coordination. By the end of 2024, nineteen patients were enrolled across the four participating institutions. The most frequently used clinical pathway was vaccination after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (7 cases). The median time from the referral request by the hub hospital to confirmation by the comm

Rebuilding people-centred maternal health services in post-Ebola Liberia through participatory action research.

During the March 2014-January 2016 Ebola crisis in Liberia, Redemption Hospital lost 12 staff and became a holding facility for suspected cases, prompting violent hostility from the surrounding New Kru Town community, in the capital city Monrovia. Inpatient services were closed for 6 months, leaving the population without maternity care. In January 2015, Redemption reopened, but utilization was low, especially for deliveries. A key barrier was community trust in health workers which worsened during the epidemic. The New Kru Town council, Redemption Hospital, the International Rescue Committee,

PURPOSE: Beginning in 2025, Outpatient and Ambulatory Surgery Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (OAS CAHPS), became mandatory reporting for outpatient services. Facilities accepting Medicare and Medicaid payments, stand to lose 2% of reimbursement if they fail to report OAS CAHPS scores. January 2025, our community hospital OAS CAHPS score for the benchmark question "Likelihood to Recommend" was 93.7%, with a peer group rank of 13. This was near bottom-decile performance and considered below expectations. DESIGN: Process improvement. METHODS: A four-pillar patient exper

Cybersecurity Protection for PACS and Medical Imaging: Deployment Considerations and Practical Problems.

Cybersecurity is increasingly affecting the healthcare sector. In a recent article, the authors analyzed specific attacks against picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) and medical imaging networks and proposed security measures. This article discusses issues that require consideration when deploying these proposed measures and provides recommendations on how to implement them. Hospitals should deploy virus scanners on systems where permitted, with high priority on devices that are part of the central IT infrastructure of the hospital. They should introduce a systematic management

Analysis of hospital ability to provide trauma services: a comparison between teaching and community hospitals.

HYPOTHESIS: Teaching hospitals (TH) can maintain the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACSCOT) criteria for Level II trauma care more consistently than can community hospitals (CH). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 2,091 trauma system patients was done to determine if TH in an urban area are better able to meet the criteria for Level II trauma care than are CH. During the study period, a voluntary trauma plan existed among five hospitals; two TH and three CH. A hospital could accept patients that met trauma system entry criteria as long as, at that moment, it could provide
