Incidence of Dissociation With Low-Dose Pre-hospital Ketamine in Geriatric Patients With Trauma-Related Pain.

Introduction Sub-dissociative ketamine has been used increasingly for the treatment of acute pain in a wide variety of settings. While there are studies evaluating its use in the geriatric population, no studies have described its safety in the pre-hospital geriatric trauma patient. The objective of this study was to define the incidence of dissociation with low-dose pre-hospital ketamine in geriatric trauma patients. Methods Using our county emergency medical services database, we identified all trauma patients greater or equal to 65 years of age who received pre-hospital ketamine for pain af

Decreased mortality among patients with catheter-related bloodstream infections at Catalan hospitals (2010-2019).

BACKGROUND: The incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) has fallen over the last decade, especially in intensive care units (ICUs). AIM: To assess the existence of concomitant trends in outcomes and to analyse the current risk factors for mortality. METHODS: A multicentre retrospective cohort study was conducted at 24 Catalan hospitals participating in the Surveillance of healthcare-associated infections in Catalonia (VINCat). All hospital-acquired CRBSI episodes diagnosed from January 2010 to December 2019 were included. A common protocol including epidemiological, cli

Modeling of Survival and Frequency of Cardiovascular-Related Hospitalization in Patients with Transthyretin Amyloid Cardiomyopathy Treated with Tafamidis.

INTRODUCTION: ATTR-ACT (Tafamidis in Transthyretin Cardiomyopathy Clinical Trial) demonstrated the efficacy and safety of tafamidis in transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM). Model-based analyses from ATTR-ACT can examine predictor effects on dose-response/exposure-response relationships. METHODS: Parametric hazard distributions were developed for all-cause mortality and frequency of cardiovascular-related hospitalization. Time-to-event models were fitted to survival data, and repeated time-to-event models were fitted to hospitalization data. Disease-specific characteristics were asse

Health-related quality of life of patients with HIV/AIDS at a tertiary care teaching hospital in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and health state utility values are critical inputs in the clinical and economic evaluation of treatments for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, information on health state utility values is lacking in the context of Ethiopia. Here, we aimed to assess HRQoL and determine health state utility values and factors that influence the values among HIV/AIDS patients in Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 511 HIV/AIDS patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospita

Stakeholder experiences and expectations of transition of care services to reduce medication-related hospital readmission for cardiology patients.

BACKGROUND: Transition of care (ToC) for patients with cardiovascular diseases is a complex, high-risk period often leading to medication-related harm (MRH) and hospital readmissions. While specialised programs exist, a gap in individualised medication management services exist for specific cardiology patient populations. Pharmacist-led, interdisciplinary ToC services have demonstrated a positive impact on patient outcomes. The REducing hospital re-admission for high-risk CARDiology patients (RECARD) program aims to address this by co-designing, implementing, and evaluating a new pharmacist-le

The interaction between frailty and patient characteristics and its association with hospital-related adverse events in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a state of increased vulnerability to stressors that predisposes individuals to adverse outcomes. Hospital-related adverse events (AEs) are complications not directly caused by patients' pre-existing conditions. While age has been widely studied, less is known about the effect of frailty and its interaction with patient demographic and clinical characteristics on the risk of having at least one adverse event (AE) among acutely admitted older adults. METHODS: In this study, AEs were operationally defined as Datix-reported patient safety incidents with the potential to ca
