Major pandemics have tremendous effects on society. They precipitated the early decline of the Western Roman Empire and helped spread Christianity. There are countless such examples of infectious diseases altering the course of history. The impact of epidemics on education however is less well documented. This present historical account of the past 800 years looks specifically at how some aspects of education were shaped from the early medieval epidemics such as leprosy and the Black Plague to the Spanish Flu and COVID-19. Leprosy changed religious education, and the Black Plague may have cont

There are more migrants, refugees, and immigrants adrift in the world today than at any time in the recent past. Doctors and hospitals must care for people from many different cultures, countries, and religious backgrounds. We sometimes find our own deeply held beliefs and values challenged. In this "Ethics Rounds," we present a case in which a Pakistani immigrant family faces a tragic medical situation and wants to deal with it in ways that might be normative in their own culture but are aberrant in ours. We asked the American doctors and 2 Pakistani health professionals to think through the

Current psychopathology classifies schizophrenic positive symptoms into four groups: delusions, hallucinations, formal thought disorder, and catatonic symptoms. The present study explores the factor structure of different positive symptoms to refine this classification. The 35 positive symptoms of 429 psychiatric patients, consecutively admitted to any of 95 mental hospitals, with diagnosis of the ICD-10 F20 schizophrenia, were studied. After excluding those items with a base rate of 10% or less, factor analysis yielded six factors. The first factor was loaded by most of Schneider's first-rank

Nurses play a pivotal role in supporting patients during the dying process. A transcultural perspective is crucial to provide individualized, respectful care that addresses cultural beliefs, values, and practices. Despite growing attention to cultural competence in palliative care, little is known about how nurses integrate these dimensions in daily practice. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of palliative and oncology nurses regarding culturally sensitive end-of-life care. A phenomenological qualitative design was employed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 6 oncology n

Possession state is a disorder of consciousness with substitution of the personality, which is claimed to be a spirit, a deity, a dead person or some other power. In rural Nepal these experiences are normalised and Hindu communities often attribute psychological conditions to a supernatural cause. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman who presented with acute-onset symptoms characterised by episodes of altered consciousness, vocalisations suggestive of religious chants, and deity-associated behaviour, probably influenced by local suggestions of divine possession. Additional notable feature

Self-mutilation attempts are common in psychiatric practice. One form of self-harm, genital self-mutilation (GSM), is less common but may have severe consequences. GSM acts can occur in different diagnoses such as personality disorders, substance abuse disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and psychotic disorders. When GSM is performed due to psychotic symptoms, the clinical picture is called Klingsor Syndrome. GSM is often associated with severe psychosis and often accompanied by religious delusions. In our article, we discussed a case of schizophrenia with penile autoamputation due to r

BACKGROUND: Ethical dilemmas in healthcare arise from conflicts among ethical beliefs, duties, principles, and theories. Midwives face ethical dilemmas in their clinical practice, where their decisions significantly affect the well-being of mothers and infants. However, there is a scarcity of data about midwives' experience of ethical dilemmas in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to explore the ethical dilemmas faced by midwives in their professional practice in northwestern Ethiopia, 2024.
METHODS: A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach was conducted from December 2023 to Jan

BACKGROUND: Globally, around 2.6 million neonatal deaths occur world-wide every year and the numbers of stillbirths is almost similar. Pakistan is ranked among the highest countries in the world for neonatal mortality. In 2016, for every 1000 babies born in Pakistan, 46 died before the end of the first month of life. Also, Pakistan had the highest rate of stillbirths (43.1/1000 births) in 2015. To meet sustainable development (SDG) targets of reducing neonatal mortality and stillbirths, it is essential to gain understanding about the causes of neonatal death and stillbirths. In Pakistan, full

The Catholic Church participates in the U.S. healthcare system by reason of its contribution to the common good of society. To facilitate this, the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services set forth certain normative principles. Catholic healthcare is dedicated to promoting human dignity and the sacredness of life; it has an "option for the poor"; it seeks the common good, cooperating with other providers toward that end; it prohibits abortion, in vitro fertilization, contraceptive sterilization, and assisted suicide procedures in free-standing Catholic healthcare ins

"Losing Thomas & Ella" presents a research comic about one father's perinatal loss of twins. The comic recounts Paul's experience of the hospital and the babies' deaths, and it details the complex grieving process afterward, including themes of anger, distance, relationship stress, self-blame, religious challenges, and resignation. A methodological appendix explains the process of constructing the comic and provides a rationale for the use of comics-based research for illness, death, and grief among practitioners, policy makers, and the bereaved.
