Quality of life of ostomates at a teaching and referral hospital in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Ostomy surgery is performed to maintain gastrointestinal function. However, there is a lack of knowledge and experience about ostomies among patients and clinicians in public hospitals in Kenya. The issue is compounded by the social isolation and stigma ostomates face in the wards and in the community after discharge. Although it is not easy to identify the exact number of ostomates in Kenya and other African countries, there is need to shift the focus from curing symptoms in ostomates to maximising patients' quality of life (QoL) and integrating services for ostomates in mainstrea

The benefits of a Neurogenetics clinic in an adult Academic Teaching Hospital.

Genetics is the backbone of Neurology, where a number of disorders have a genetic aetiology and are complex, requiring a dedicated Neurogenetics clinic. Genetics in the Republic of Ireland is under-resourced, with the lowest number of consultants per million of population in Europe. In November 2014, we established the monthly adult Neurogenetics clinic in Ireland, staffed by 2 consultants and 2 registrars from each speciality. We see patients with complex rare neurological conditions that may potentially have an underlying genetic basis, in the presence or absence of a family history. We perf

Maternal mortality in Cameroon: a university teaching hospital report.

More than 550,000 women die yearly from pregnancy-related causes. Fifty percent (50%) of the world estimate of maternal deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa alone. There is insufficient information on the risk factors of maternal mortality in Cameroon. This study aimed at establishing causes and risk factors of maternal mortality. This was a case-control study from 1st January, 2006 to 31st December, 2010 after National Ethical Committee Approval. Cases were maternal deaths; controls were women who delivered normally. Epidemiology and antibiotic resistance in a large Italian teaching hospital.

We focused our attention on susceptibility profile of Acinetobacter spp., Pseudomonas spp., and Klebsiella spp. isolated from biological specimens at the University Hospital of Salerno between June 2011 and October 2012. Acinetobacter, with a prevalence of Acinetobacter baumannii (97%) presented a high range of resistance to the antimicrobials considered, excluding colistin (COL). Klebsiella spp. isolates, with a prevalence of Klebsiella pneumoniae (90%), presented a variable pattern of resistance [from 9·8% for COL to 50% for levofloxacin (LEV)]. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases production w

Pattern and presentation of acute abdomen in a Nigerian teaching hospital.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pain of sudden onset is the hallmark of most non-traumatic emergency surgical presentations. This presents a scenario of urgency to the young surgeon who has to determine which of a myriad of disease conditions the patient is presenting with. Such a physician has to rely on experience and a sound knowledge of the local aetiological spectrum in making a clinical diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To determine the epidemiology and aetiological spectrum of diseases presenting as acute abdomen in the adult population at the hospital surgical emergency unit. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two hun
