This study examines the extent of adverse parenting behaviors among low-income families with children and determines whether housing instability, measured by homelessness and doubling up with relatives or friends due to economic hardship, increases the likelihood of physical and psychological aggression towards a child, after considering the contribution of other relevant characteristics. Using data from 3 waves of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, this study followed 2,332 low-income children in 20 large U.S. cities. Multivariate analyses involved logistic regression with genera

BACKGROUND: This article investigates the potential links between housing instability and unregulated drug use at the intersection of the housing affordability crisis, drug poisoning emergency, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: Data for this study were collected as part of an Edmonton, Alberta survey of people who use drugs (N = 406, April-September 2023). This study examines the associations between housing instability, the severity of individual drug use patterns, as measured through the Drug Use Disorders Identification Test (DUDIT) score, and the risk of accidental overdose using a seri

Limited data are available on the longitudinal occurrence of syndemic factors among women at risk for HIV infection in the USA and how these factors relate to sexual risk over time. HVTN 906 was a longitudinal study enrolling 799 HIV-uninfected women in three cities. Assessments were done at baseline, 6, 12, and 18 months to assess syndemic factors (low education, low income, unemployment, lack of health insurance, housing instability, substance use, heavy alcohol use, partner violence, incarceration) and sexual risk outcomes. For each sexual risk outcome, a GEE model was fit with syndemic fac

Housing is a fundamental social determinant of health and wellbeing for migrant and refugee populations and serves as a critical pathway through which health disparities emerge and persist over time. However, evidence on how housing disparities shape health outcomes among newly arrived migrants and refugees remains limited, particularly evidence attentive to how these experiences vary by visa and migration pathway. This qualitative study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the housing and health disparities faced by newly arrived migrants and refugees in Greater Western Sydney, Australi

Objectives Access to stable, safe, and affordable housing is an important determinant of health and community integration among people living with mental illness. Previous studies on housing stability, housing satisfaction and residential preferences among people living with mental illness have primarily been conducted among those with extensive service use experiences. First-time mental health service users, and youth in particular, are likely to present with distinct housing needs. The current study aimed to explore the housing experiences of new mental health service users, as well as the p

Housing instability, homelessness, and mental health among young people who use drugs in Vancouver, Canada, and elsewhere have increasingly been framed through a language of crisis. The declaration of overlapping housing, mental health, and addictions crises in our own setting has prompted a wide range of interventions, including the rapid expansion of supportive housing programs that include integrated housing-based substance use and mental health care. There is growing evidence demonstrating that these models are effective at stabilizing people who are experiencing protracted housing instabi

Objectives Emergency departments (EDs) serve as a health care "safety net" and may be uniquely suited to screening for and addressing patients' unmet social needs. We aimed to better understand patient perspectives on ED-based screening and interventions related to housing instability, as a step toward improving future efforts. Methods We present findings from a qualitative study using in-depth, one-on-one interviews with ED patients who had become homeless in the past 6 months. Qualitative interviewees were asked their thoughts on ED staff asking about and helping to address homelessness and

OBJECTIVES: We assessed how different patterns of housing instability affect incarceration and whether correlates of incarceration are gender specific.
METHODS: We used multivariate logistic regression to assess associations between patterns of housing instability and recent jail stays among a reproducible sample of 1175 marginally housed adults in San Francisco, California.
RESULTS: Over the previous year, 71% of men and 21% of women in the sample reported jail stays. Among women, long-term single-room occupancy hotel stays ( > 90 days) were protective for incarceration. Stays in the street

Housing is a crucial issue for adults with severe mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders, as this population is particularly susceptible to housing instability and homelessness. We interviewed 40 adults with dual disorders, living in either supervised or independent housing arrangements, to examine housing preferences, decision making processes surrounding housing choices, and perceived barriers to housing. We found that many clients indicated their housing preferences had changed over time, and some clients related housing preferences to recovery. Although the majority of cli

Depression among mothers with young children is an important public health issue that not only has implications for their own well-being, but can also potentially affect their children's health and developmental trajectories. This study explored the extent to which maternal depression is a risk factor for inadequate housing conditions related to utilities, a noteworthy risk factor for poor child health. Using data on 2965 mothers and children from a national urban cohort of U.S. births in 1998-2000, we estimated multivariate logistic regression models of associations between maternal depressio

Affordable housing is an important form of income security for low-income older persons. This article describes characteristics of older persons waitlisted for either public housing or a housing choice voucher (HCV; previously Section 8) in Portland, Oregon. 358 persons (32% response rate) completed a mailed survey with questions about demographics, health and housing status, food insecurity, and preference for housing with services. Findings indicate that many waitlisted older persons experienced homelessness or housing instability, poor health, high hospital use, and food insecurity. Public

This study investigates the longitudinal impact of socioeconomic instability on teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis among adolescents and young adults (AYA) living in an agricultural region and examines pathways including supportive family and social structures, decision making autonomy in romantic relationships, health access, mental health and coping behaviors, and perceptions of future opportunities. Data were drawn from A Crecer, an 8-year cohort study in Salinas, California (2015-2023). Outcomes of teen pregnancy (<20 years) and STIs were measured using self-

BACKGROUND: Economic instability may shape substance use (i.e., cigarette use and cannabis use) among the adult population. However, their relationship remains poorly understood. This study estimated the prevalence of economic instability indicators (i.e., employment instability, received food stamps, food insecurity, housing insecurity, and threatened utility shutoffs), exclusive cigarette use (TU), exclusive cannabis use (CU), and cigarette-cannabis co-use (TCU), and investigated the associations between economic instability indicators and these distinct substance use patterns among adults a

INTRODUCTION: Frequent emergency department (ED) users, particularly those with high rates of use, often experience complex social determinants of health (SDOH) that contribute to their repeated visits and may lead to adverse health outcomes. Our objective in this study was to characterize the needs most commonly affecting this population, which may support the creation of tailored interventions with a higher chance of success.
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of patients evaluated by an ED social medicine team in a large urban academic ED from May 2021-December 2023. Patients were

The aim of this study is to explore how young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability experience participating in peer support from paid peer support specialists with shared lived experiences. The present study used participatory qualitative methods, specifically a photovoice project with young people (N = 8) experiencing homelessness or housing instability, to understand their experiences of being in a relationship with a peer support specialist. This study found that young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability experienced peer relationships as uniquely carin

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder, mental health conditions, and housing instability are frequently intertwined and have a profound impact on health outcomes. While past research has focused on the opioid use and mental health of people experiencing homelessness, less is known about those experiencing housing instability. We examined the cross-sectional associations between housing status (currently unhoused, unstably housed, and stably housed) and mental health and substance use severity among primary care patients with co-occurring disorders. METHODS: Data are from a randomized controlled tria

People who use drugs (PWUD) commonly experience housing instability due to intersecting structural vulnerabilities (e.g., drug prohibition, discriminatory housing policies), and prejudicial or illegal evictions are common. In Vancouver, Canada, evictions have proliferated in the Downtown Eastside, a historically low-income neighbourhood with high rates of drug use and housing instability, resulting in many PWUD being evicted into homelessness. This study characterizes housing trajectories of recently-evicted PWUD through the lens of the institutional circuit of homelessness, and explores how w

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Rates of psychosis in the homeless population are markedly higher compared to the general population. Understanding potential psychological mechanisms underpinning links between psychosis and homelessness is important for the development of effective care pathways for this highly marginalised group. This study aimed to examine the housing status of a sample of people with psychosis admitted to psychiatric inpatient hospital in one UK mental health trust. We further aimed to examine the presence and relevance of symptoms which were directly related to housing (e.g., persecu

INTRODUCTION: The rate of infectious syphilis continues to increase among females in British Columbia (BC) and Canada, raising concerns of increased incidence of congenital syphilis. We characterized syphilis cases among females in BC to identify opportunities to prevent syphilis and optimize its care.
METHODS: All cases of infectious syphilis diagnosed in BC between March 13, 2018 and December 31, 2020 and reported as female gender were reviewed. Demographics, risk factors and concurrent conditions were collected from a provincial surveillance system. Subgroup analyses comparing cases with a
