Gastrointestinal nematode infections of goats in a sub-tropical and humid zone of India.

Twelve hundred and twenty-eight goats (Capra hircus L.) from a sub-tropical and humid zone of India were examined for gastrointestinal nematodes. The species encountered in the region were: Haemonchus contortus, Bunostomum trigonocephalum, Oesophagostomum columbianum, Trichuris globulosa, O. aspersum, and T. ovis. The overall infection rate was 86.8%. Among various species found, H. contortus emerged as the most prevalent, although B. trigonocephalum and O. columbianum were also significantly in evidence. The seasonal fluctuation in infection was assessed by monitoring the faecal egg count of

Effects of heat and humidity on the responses of exercising asthmatics to sulfur dioxide exposure.

Twenty-two asthmatic young adult volunteers, predetermined to be reactive to sulfur dioxide (SO2) with exercise at normal room temperature, were studied to document short-term effects of SO2 exposure under hot conditions, both humid and dry. For comparison, similar exposures were conducted at mild temperatures. All subjects were exposed in an environmental control chamber to all possible combinations of 2 atmospheric conditions (purified air and 0.6 ppm SO2), 2 temperatures (near 21 and 38 degrees C), and 2 levels of relative humidity (near 20 and 80%). Exposures involved 5 min of heavy exerci

[Work in a humid environment as a conditioning factor in the genesis of occupation-induced dermatoses].

In a prospective study undertaken from 1980-1983 the risk of developing occupational eczemas among apprentices usually working in a wet environment was analysed. Investigations involving 305 volunteers from technical colleges revealed a marked increase of dermatoses in subjects occupationally exposed to wet conditions. The influence of water and detergents on the barrier function of the horny layer of the epidermis is discussed.

Nonlinear dynamics and predictability limits of indoor radon under temperature and humidity variability.

Indoor radon variability is shaped by coupled physical processes that limit short-term predictability and challenge conventional statistical modeling. We analyzed high-resolution 10-min indoor radon measurements (4842 samples, October-November 2023) at the Centre de Recherche Nucléaire d'Alger, alongside simultaneous indoor temperature and relative humidity records. Nonlinear time-series metrics, including Kolmogorov complexity (KC), the Kolmogorov complexity spectrum (KCS), and the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE), were applied to characterize dynamical structure. The KC spectrum indicates tha

Programmable Humidity Actuators Enabled by Precise Interfacial Control of COF Nanostructures on Nanocellulose.

Designing humidity-driven actuators with rapid, programmable motion remains challenging due to limited responsiveness and poor mechanical integrity in conventional materials. Here, we demonstrate a strategy that transforms one-dimensional (1D) cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) into mechanically robust two-dimensional films through premodification, which simultaneously directs the controlled growth of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) to produce tunable, moisture-responsive surfaces. A Fully Integrated Smart Facemask for Ultrafast and Humidity-Resistant Exhaled CO2 Monitoring.

Exhaled CO2 monitoring offers critical insights into respiratory, cardiac, and metabolic functions. However, its broader adoption is hindered by the lack of compact, fast-responding, and humidity-resistant sensing systems capable of accurately tracking rapid breathing cycles in real time. Here, we present a fully integrated wireless facemask for continuous exhaled CO2 monitoring that overcomes these challenges. We developed a nanocomposite colorimetric sensing material, mCP/ZIF-8-NH2@fCOF, which possesses an ultrafast response time of 60 ms and a hydrophobic shell that mitigates humidity inter

Primary Humidity Standards for Trace Water Measurements in Ultra-High-Purity Process Gases.

Trace water is one of the most critical matrix contaminants in ultra-high-purity (UHP) process gases, like argon (Ar), nitrogen (N2), and many others. Even trace amounts can severely degrade the quality of many products that are reliant on these gases. Despite its importance to advanced technology sectors, notably semiconductor manufacturing, it has proven quite difficult to realize preparative or analytical trace water metrology over the full amount fraction range needed or in the broad spectrum of industrially relevant matrix gases. Within the EU-funded PROMETH2O project consortium, this cha

Humidity-Driven Chloride Protonation and Surface Enrichment on Natural Salt Surfaces near Deliquescence.

Natural salts are ubiquitous in saline environments and atmospheric aerosols, where their surface chemistry influences multiphase reactions and chlorine activation. The release of chloride as reactive chlorine species affects tropospheric oxidation and ozone chemistry, yet the molecular-level processes governing chloride speciation near deliquescence remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate humidity-driven interfacial chemistry of a natural chloride-rich salt using ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscop

Optimizing dry powder delivery during invasive mechanical ventilation via circuit absolute humidity control.

Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are rarely used during invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) because intubated patients cannot generate sufficient inspiratory effort, and ventilator circuits require heated humidification that may impair powder dispersion. This study evaluated whether a ventilator-actuated, enclosed DPI chamber combined with a rapidly adjustable absolute humidifier can enable efficient DPI delivery under clinically relevant IMV conditions. An in vitro IMV model was operated in volume-controlled ventilation (15 breaths/min; I:E 1:2; square waveform; peak flow 50 L/min). An enclosed d

Enhanced Ethanol Sensing Performance and Humidity Tolerance of Ce/ZnO-Incorporated In2O3 Nanocubes.

This work presents the design and evaluation of cerium and zinc oxide-incorporated indium oxide (Ce/ZnO-In2O3) nanocube composites synthesized via a hydrothermal process for advanced ethanol gas sensing. The incorporation of Ce and ZnO effectively modified the surface chemistry and electronic structure of In2O3 without causing significant morphological degradation. Compared with pristine In2O3, the Ce/ZnO-In2O3 sensor exhibited a significantly enhanced response of 33.2 toward 100 ppm ethanol at 300 °C, corresponding to an 8.7-fold improvement, along with a low detection limit of 0.8 ppm. Beyond Blood Pressure: Peripheral Artery Disease Diagnosis With the Ankle-Brachial Humidity Index.

BACKGROUND: The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is the standard non-invasive diagnostic tool for peripheral artery disease, but it has some limitations, particularly in patients with arterial calcification. This study introduces the ankle-brachial humidity index as a novel diagnostic approach for peripheral artery disease. METHOD: In this prospective single-centre study in Turkey, 100 patients underwent comprehensive cardiovascular assessment including ABI measurements, lower extremity arterial Doppler ultrasonography, and skin moisture measurements using a digital moisture device. The ankle-brach

When air gets heavy: joint PM2.5 and ambient humidity exposure, frailty, and stroke.

BACKGROUND: PM2.5 exposure has been associated with stroke, but evidence regarding ambient humidity, joint environmental exposure, and the mediating role of frailty remains limited. METHODS: We integrated data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS; n = 17,197) and a single-center hospital-based sample (n = 782). Annual average PM2.5 and relative humidity in the year before baseline or index date were assigned by residential location and dichotomized using database-specific medians. Joint exposure was categorized into four groups. Incident stroke in CHARLS was analyze

Modeling feed intake in lactating sows during summer considering temperature and humidity covariates.

Heat stress during lactation reduces voluntary feed intake (FI) and milk production in sows, thereby limiting piglet growth. In this context, the main objectives of this study were to compare alternative models for describing daily FI over a 22-d lactation and to evaluate temperature- and humidity-related environmental covariates under commercial conditions. Daily FI records from 898 lactating sows (parity 1: 503, parity 2: 138, parity 3 and higher: 257) were analyzed using mixed-effects models. The generalized Michaelis-Menten (GMM) function was compared against a third-order orthogonal polyn

Short-term exposure to a high-humidity environment triggers intestinal inflammation via AQP3.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing greenhouse effect, there is growing concern about the correlation between the humid environment and the incidence of various diseases. A high-humidity environment may cause intestinal inflammation through bacterial colonization or contamination of water. Aquaporin-3 (AQP3) plays an important role in maintaining intestinal water transport, permeability, fluid secretion, and absorption homeostasis. This paper explored the effects of short-term exposure to a high-humidity environment on intestinal health. METHODS: To explore the effects of a high-humidity environm

Quanta emission rate during speaking and coughing mediated by indoor temperature and humidity.

In epidemiological prospective modelling, assessing the hypothetical infectious quanta emission rate (Eq) is critical for estimating airborne infection risk. Existing Eq models overlook environmental factors such as indoor relative humidity (RH) and temperature (T), despite their importance to droplet evaporation dynamics. Here we include these environmental factors in a prospective Eq model based on the airborne probability functions with emitted droplet distribution for speaking and coughing activities. Our results show relative humidity and temperature have substantial influence on Eq. Drie

A Micro Capacitive Humidity Sensor Based on Al-Mo Electrodes and Polyimide Film.

Quickly sensing humidity changes is required in some fields, such as in fuel cell vehicles. The micro humidity sensor used for the relative humidity (RH) measurement with fast response characteristics, and its numerical model and method are rare. This paper firstly presents a numerical model and method for a parallel plate capacitor and a numerical analysis of its dynamic characteristics. The fabrication of this sensor was carried out based on the numerical results, and, the main characteristics of its moisture-sensitive element are shown. This parallel plate capacitor is made using complement

Highly-Aligned All-Fiber Actuator with Asymmetric Photothermal-Humidity Response and Autonomous Perceptivity.

Soft robots adapt to complex environments for autonomous locomotion, manipulation, and perception are attractive for robot-environment interactions. Strategies to reconcile environment-triggered actuation and self-powered sensing responses to different stimuli remain challenging. By tuning the in situ vapor phase solvent exchange effect in continuous electrospinning, an asymmetric highly-aligned all-fiber membrane (HAFM) with a hierarchical "grape-like" nanosphere-assembled microfiber structure (specific surface area of 13.6 m2 g-1) and excellent mechanical toughness (tensile stress of 5.5 MPa

Silica wastes derived multifunctional coatings for formaldehyde photodegradation and autonomous indoor humidity buffering.

To maintain a comfortable and healthy indoor environment without large amounts of energy consumption is of great importance. The progress of multifunctional indoor coatings with formaldehyde photodegradation and humidity buffering capability is necessary. From the viewpoints of circular economy, the preparation of effective photocatalysts (denoted as sFCC/GCN-x and ESF/GCN-y) via the decoration of recycling industrial wastes (i.e., spent fluid catalytic cracking catalysts (sFCC) and enhancement silica fume (ESF)) onto graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) by using a simple route is reported.
