Hydrogen Bond Variations of Influenza A Viruses During Adaptation in Human.

Many host specific mutations have been detected in influenza A viruses (IAVs). However, their effects on hydrogen bond (H-bond) variations have rarely been investigated. In this study, 60 host specific sites were identified in the internal proteins of avian and human IAVs, 27 of which contained mutations with effects on H-bonds. Besides, 30 group specific sites were detected in HA and NA. Twenty-six of 36 mutations existing at these group specific sites caused H-bond loss or formation in at least one subtype. The number of mutations in isolations of 2009 pandemic H1N1, human-infecting H5N1 and

Cellular interfaces with hydrogen-bonded organic semiconductor hierarchical nanocrystals.

Successful formation of electronic interfaces between living cells and semiconductors hinges on being able to obtain an extremely close and high surface-area contact, which preserves both cell viability and semiconductor performance. To accomplish this, we introduce organic semiconductor assemblies consisting of a hierarchical arrangement of nanocrystals. These are synthesised via a colloidal chemical route that transforms the nontoxic commercial pigment quinacridone into various biomimetic three-dimensional arrangements of nanocrystals. Through a tuning of parameters such as precursor concent

A four-unit [c2]daisy chain connected by hydrogen bonds.

A mono-adenine-functionalized pillar[5]arene and a guest including uracil were prepared. They formed a novel four-unit [c2]daisy chain both in the solid state and in a chloroform solution. As far as we know, this [c2]daisy chain is the first one without a covalently bound linear thread. This unique assembly behavior is mainly induced by hydrogen-bond interactions between A and U in the A-U base pairs.

Effect of hydrogen bonding and complexation with metal ions on the fluorescence of luotonin A.

Fluorescence characteristics of a biologically active natural alkaloid, luotonin A (LuA), were studied by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic methods. The rate constant of the radiationless deactivation from the singlet-excited state diminished by more than one order of magnitude when the solvent polarity was changed from toluene to water. Dual emission was found in polyfluorinated alcohols of large hydrogen bond donating ability due to photoinitiated proton displacement along the hydrogen bond. In CH2Cl2, LuA produced both 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 hydrogen-bonded complexes with hexafluoro-2-p

TDDFT study on intramolecular hydrogen bond of photoexcited methyl salicylate.

The equilibrium geometries, IR-spectra and transition mechanism of intramolecular hydrogen-bonded methyl salicylate in excited state were studied using DFT and TDDFT with 6-31++G (d, p) basis set. The length of hydrogen bond OH⋯OC is decreased from 1.73 Å in the ground state to 1.41 and 1.69 Å in the excited S1 and S3 states. The increase of bond length for HO and CO group also indicates that in excited state the hydrogen bond OH⋯OC is strengthened. IR spectra show HO and CO stretching bands are strongly redshifted by 1387 and 67 cm(-1) in the excited S1 and S3 states comparing to the ground s

Hydrogen bond lifetimes and clustering of methanol in carbon tetrachloride solutions.

NMR experiments and ab initio calculations suggest that methanol forms small cyclic hydrogen bond clusters (4-6 molecules) in the condensed phase. In contrast, molecular dynamics simulations have indicated that methanol will form large branched chains that extend to include hundreds of molecules. In this paper, we performed a series of simulations examining the structure and dynamics of methanol/carbon tetrachloride mixtures. We show that two simulation models are capable of reproducing the trends in the experimental NMR data despite the fact that they indicate that the structure of the liquid

Dynamic combinatorial libraries based on hydrogen-bonded molecular boxes.

This article describes two different types of dynamic combinatorial libraries of host and guest molecules. The first part of this article describes the encapsulation of alizarin trimer 2a3 by dynamic mixtures of up to twenty different self-assembled molecular receptors together with the amplification and selection of the best binder. Receptors (1a-d)3.(DEB)6 are formed by the self-assembly of six diethyl barbiturate (DEB) and calix[4]arene dimelamine derivatives 1a-d by using hydrogen bonds. The largest amplification factor (2.8) for a host assembly (1a3.(DEB)6) was observed after the addition

Infrared spectroscopy of hydrogen-bonded CHCl3-SO2 in the gas phase.

A molecular association between chloroform and sulfur dioxide in the gas phase at room temperature was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Since the intensity of the CH-stretching fundamental vibration of monomer chloroform is very weak but much stronger upon complexation, a simple subtraction procedure isolated the CH-stretching vibration spectrum of the complex. The presence of a 1:1 complex was confirmed by two dilution series, where the monomer concentrations were varied. The molecular association manifested itself as a shift of the peak absorbance of the CH-stretching vibr

Enhanced photovoltaic response in hydrogen-bonded all-organic devices.

Straightforward synthetic methodologies are reported for the functionalization of oligothiophenes with hydrogen-bonding motifs. Codeposition from a solution of symmetric melamine-terminated electron-donor oligomers with a complementary barbiturate-labeled electron-acceptor fullerene resulted in homogeneous films. Incorporation into photovoltaic devices gave a 2.5-fold enhancement in light energy to electrical energy conversion when compared to analogous systems with the non-hydrogen-bonding parent C(60). Electrostatic interaction of pi-acidic amides with hydrogen-bond acceptors.

Interactions between N-methylacetamide (NMA) and N-methylated derivatives of uracil, isocyanurate and barbituric acid have been studied using ab initio methods at the local MP2/6-31G** level of theory. The results were compared to similar interactions between the oxygen atom of NMA and the pi-clouds of perfluorobenzene, quinone and trimethyltriazine. The pi-acidic amides of isocyanurate and barbituric acid were found to interact with a hydrogen bond acceptor primarily through electrostatic attractions. These groups may be used as alternatives of a hydrogen bond donor to complement a hydrogen b

Enantioselective noncovalent synthesis of hydrogen-bonded double-rosette assemblies.

The noncovalent synthesis of enantiomerically pure hydrogen-bonded assemblies (M)- and (P)-1(3).(CA)(6) is described. These dynamic assemblies are of one single handedness (M or P), but do not contain any chiral components. They are prepared by using the "chiral memory" concept: the induction of supramolecular chirality is achieved through initial assembly with chiral barbiturates, which are subsequently replaced by achiral cyanurates. This exchange process occurs quantitatively and without loss of the M or P handedness of the assemblies. Racemization studies have been used to determine an act

Intramolecular hydrogen bonding in disubstituted ethanes. A comparison of NH...O- and OH...O- Hydrogen bonding through conformational analysis of 4-amino-4-oxobutanoate (succinamate) and monohydrogen 1,4-butanoate (monohydrogen succinate) anions.

Relative strengths of amide NH...O- and carboxyl OH...O- hydrogen bonds were investigated via conformational analysis of succinamate and monohydrogen succinate anions with the aid of vicinal proton-proton NMR couplings and B3LYP DFT quantum mechanical calculations for a variety of solvents. New experimental results for succinamate are compared with those obtained from previous studies of monohydrogen succinate. While some computational results for monohydrogen succinate were published previously, the results contained herein are the product of a more powerful methodology than that used earlier

Breaking the Hydrogen Bond Barrier Reversibly: Toward Ultradrawable Polyamides.

In polyamides, hydrogen bonding and conformations of amide motifs are strongly influenced by pH, ions and their concentration, and water molecules and their structure. To fulfill the physical requirements for ultradrawing of polyamide 6, we first complete our fundamental insight into the role of water, ions, and polyamide 6 crystal structures on the concept of reversible shielding of hydrogen bonds. The reversible shielding depends on a complementary superchaotropic effect of anions and the kosmotropic effect of cations, locally affecting the structuring and interactions of water. We show that

Biomimetic mineralization with enhanced hydrogen-bond interactions for protein stabilization.

Various protein species exhibit great potential in industrial and therapeutic applications; however, these applications are still limited owing to their fragility to high temperatures. In this work, a biomimetic mineralization strategy was used to construct a condensed protein-calcium phosphate hybrid structure to improve the thermostability of proteins. The mineral ion precursor used in the conventional method was replaced with a biomimetic nanocluster of calcium phosphate capped with triethylamine to provide an extra linking site on the phosphate end of the mineral. A higher protein concentr

Hydrogen-bonded assemblies of iron(II) spin crossover complexes.

The paper reports on the synthesis, crystal structure, thermal and magnetic properties of spin crossover (SCO) salts containing the [Fe(bpp)2]2+ cation (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine) and different rigid polycarboxylate anions, such as anthracene-9,10-dicarboxylate (ADC), benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC) and biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate (BPDC). Compound [Fe(bpp)2](ADC)·9H2O (1) shows a porous hydrogen-bonded structure with water molecules sitting in the channels. It contains low-spin (LS) Fe2+ cations that undergo crossover to the high-spin (HS) state upon dehydration. Anhydrous 1 remai

Thermoreversible Polymorph Transitions in Supramolecular Polymers of Hydrogen-Bonded Squaramides.

Hydrogen-bonded squaramide (SQ) supramolecular polymers exhibit uncommon thermoreversible polymorph transitions between particle- and fiber-like nanostructures. SQs 1-3, with different steric bulk, self-assemble in solution into particles (AggI) upon cooling to 298 K, and SQs 1 and 2, with only one dendronic group, show a reversible transformation into fibers (AggII) by further decreasing the temperature to 288 K. Nano-DSC and UV/Vis studies on SQ 1 reveal a concentration-dependent transition temperature and ΔH for the AggI-to-AggII conversion, while the kinetic studies on SQ 2 indicate the on

Exciton interactions in helical crystals of a hydrogen-bonded eumelanin monomer.

Eumelanin, a naturally occurring group of heterogeneous polymers/aggregates providing photoprotection to living organisms, consist of 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) and 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA) building blocks. Despite their prevalence in the animal world, the structure and therefore the mechanism behind the photoprotective broadband absorption and non-radiative decay of eumelanin remain largely unknown. As a small step towards solving the incessant mystery, DHI is crystallized in a non-protic solvent environment to obtain DHI crystals having a helical packing motif. The presen

Parallel-stacked aromatic molecules in hydrogen-bonded inorganic frameworks.

By precisely constructing molecules and assembling these into well-defined supramolecular structures, novel physical properties and functionalities can be realized, and new areas of the chemical space can be accessed. In both materials science and biology, a deeper understanding of the properties and exploitation of the reversible character of weak bonds and interactions, such as hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions, is anticipated to lead to the development of materials with novel properties and functionalities. We apply the hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) strategy to inorganic mater

Infrared Intensification and Hydrogen Bond Stabilization: Beyond Point Charges.

Infrared band intensification of the A-H bond stretching mode of A-H···B acid-base systems has long been known to be the most spectacular spectral change occurring on hydrogen bonding. A QTAIM/CCTDP model is reported here to quantitatively explain the electronic structure origins of intensification and investigate the correlation between experimental enthalpies of formation and infrared hydrogen bond stretching intensifications amply reported in the literature. Augmented correlation-consistent polarized triple-zeta quantum calculations at the MP2 level were performed on complexes with HF and H
