Physiological regulation and threshold behavior of lithium uptake and removal by perennial ryegrass.

With the rapid expansion of the lithium battery industry, lithium (Li) has become an emerging environmental contaminant, particularly in industrial wastewater where concentrations can reach hundreds to thousands of mg/dm3. However, the phytoremediation potential and physiological regulatory mechanisms for Li remain insufficiently understood. In this study, perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) was evaluated through hydroponic (0-700 mg/dm3 Li, 42 d) and soil-based (0-150 mg/kg Li, 42 d) experiments to assess its growth responses, antioxidant regulation, photosynthetic performance, and Li accu

Root exudation patterns of contrasting rice (Oryza sativa L.) lines in response to P limitation.

Rice exudation patterns changed in response to P deficiency. Higher exudation rates were associated with lower biomass production. Total carboxylate exudation rates mostly decreased under P-limiting conditions. Within the rhizosphere, root exudates are believed to play an important role in plant phosphorus (P) acquisition. This could be particularly beneficial in upland rice production where P is often limited. However, knowledge gaps remain on how P deficiency shapes quality and quantity of root exudation in upland rice genotypes. We therefore investigated growth, plant P uptake, and root exu

Effects of enhancing endogenous and exogenous glutathione in roots on cadmium movement in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Glutathione (GSH) is a thiol-containing compound involved in many aspects of plant metabolism. In the present study, we investigated how enhancing endogenous and exogenous GSH affects cadmium (Cd) movement and distribution in Arabidopsis plants cultured hydroponically. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants with a strong ability to synthesize GSH in roots were generated by transforming the gene encoding the bifunctional γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase-glutathione synthetase enzyme from Streptococcus thermophiles (StGCS-GS). Enhancing endogenous and exogenous GSH decreased the Cd translocation ratio in di

Study of selenocompounds from selenium-enriched culture of edible sprouts.

Selenium is recognised as an essential micronutrient for humans and animals. One of the main sources of selenocompounds in the human diet is vegetables. Therefore, this study deals with the Se species present in different edible sprouts grown in Se-enriched media. We grew alfalfa, lentil and soy in a hydroponic system amended with soluble salts, containing the same proportion of Se, in the form of Se(VI) and Se(IV). Total Se in the sprouts was determined by acidic digestion in a microwave system and by ICP/MS. Se speciation was carried out by enzymatic extraction (Protease XIV) and measured by

Kynurenine and kynurenic acid: Two human neuromodulators found in Cannabis sativa L.

L-Kynurenine (KYN) and kynurenic acid (KYNA) are products of the metabolism of L-tryptophan (TRP) in the central nervous system of animals, but they are not commonly found in plants. In particular, KYNA is known for its interesting pharmacological properties (anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, and neuroprotective), which suggest a potential functional food ingredient role. The three compounds were identified in samples of Cannabis sativa L. by means of high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry using an untargeted metabolomics approach. Glucosinolate-rich broccoli microgreen extract promotes osteogenic differentiation and antioxidant responses in human stromal cells: implications for nutraceutical modulation of bone metabolism.

Over recent decades, interest in functional foods capable of mitigating age-related disorders and chronic inflammation-associated diseases has markedly increased. Among these, dietary organosulfur compounds, abundantly present in various vegetables, are recognized for their potential preventive effects against multiple pathological conditions. Isothiocyanates and glucosinolates (GLS) derived from Brassicaceae species, most notably sulforaphane and its precursor glucoraphanin, have demonstrated promising potential as adjunctive agents in the management of osteoporosis. Broccoli microgreens are

Microbial Origin of Aquaponic Water Suppressiveness against Pythium aphanidermatum Lettuce Root Rot Disease.

Aquaponic systems are an integrated way to produce fish and plants together with mutual benefits. Fish provide nutrients to plants on the one side, and plant nutrients uptake allow water reuse for fish on the other side. In this kind of system, the use of phytosanitary treatments to control plant pathogens is sensitive because of the risk of toxicity for fish present in the same water loop, especially coupled aquaponics. Among plant pathogens, Pythium aphanidermatum is a most problematic microorganism due to the Oomycete's capacity to produce mobile form of dispersion (zoospores) in the recirc

Biotransformation and metabolic response of cyanide in weeping willows.

Biotransformation and metabolic responses of plants to cyanide were investigated using pre-rooted plants of weeping willows (Salix babylonica L.) grown hydroponically in growth chambers and treated with potassium cyanide. Various physiological parameters of the plants were monitored to determine toxicity from exogenous cyanide exposure. Cyanide doses used in this study showed growth-promoting effects on plants, exhibiting higher measured values of transpiration rates, chlorophyll contents and soluble protein contents compared with the non-treated control plants. Assessment of Potential Zoonotic Risks in Aquaponic Lettuce Production: A Prototype for Experimental Greenhouse Trials.

Aquaponics is the integration of aquaculture and hydroponics that is now being used as a model for sustainable food production. Since fresh vegetables are usually consumed raw, especially leafy greens, there are concerns about food safety and zoonotic risks from fish waste for this emerging industry. The purpose of this study was to develop an experimental recirculating aquaponic system (RAS) prototype to then investigate persistence and transfer via root uptake of an attenuated Salmonella strain in a RAS used for leafy green production. Initially, the infective dose of Salmonella enterica ser

Natural Etiolation in Spearmint (Mentha spicata L. var. crispa) Shoots Emerging From Rhizomes-Plastids, Glandular Hairs, and Phytochemical Profile.

Spearmint (Mentha spicata L. var. crispa) is a widely cultivated aromatic herb valued both as a culinary ingredient and as a source of bioactive compounds, such as essential oils and phenolics, which contribute to its traditional uses and potential medicinal applications. In this work, we provided the first evidence of natural etiolation with etioplast and prolamellar body formation in leaves and stems of spearmint shoots emerging in the soil from underground rhizomes. Soil-grown and hydroponically dark-forced shoots exhibited comparable etiolation symptoms, plastid ultrastructure, and chlorop

Sustainable treatment scheme for in-situ remediation of contaminated drains using engineered natural systems.

Ensuring water security in resource-constrained, densely populated regions is a significant challenge globally. Due to insufficient treatment infrastructure, untreated sewage discharge into drainage channels is prevalent, especially in developing countries. This leads to the pollution of already dwindling water bodies and threatens future water availability. In this context, in-situ treatment within drains using nature-based systems is an attractive option. This study evaluates microbial bioremediation and phytoremediation as engineered natural solutions for in-stream treatment of municipal wa

Application of graphene oxide in Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation and construction of a novel DNA delivery system for watermelon.

Graphene oxide (GO) is widely used in biotechnology. The purpose of this study was to improve the efficiency of genetic transformation by constructing a delivery system based on GO. First, GO was applied in the traditional genetic transformation scheme for watermelons. We used hydroponics and tissue culture methods to determine the optimal concentration of GO for watermelon plant growth, we then used this concentration of GO for watermelon genetic transformation and found that GO can inhibit the growth of Agrobacterium tumefaciens and promote the growth of explants. This discovery can simplify

Fulvic-polyphosphate composite embedded in ZnO nanorods (FA-APP@ZnO) for efficient P/Zn nutrition for peas (Pisum sativum L.).

A nano-fertilizer (FA-APP@ZnO) was designed and prepared based on the copolymer of fulvic acid (FA) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) with ZnO nanorods embedded, to tackle the antagonism between phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) in fertilization. FA-APP@ZnO was confirmed to revert the precipitability of H2PO4 - and Zn2+ into a synergistic performance, where FA and APP can disperse ZnO nanorods, and in return, ZnO catalyzes the hydrolysis of the absorbed APP. The hydrolysis rate constant of pyrophosphates consequently increased 8 times. The dry biomass of pea (Pisum sativum L.) under the FA-APP@ZnO h

Cutaneous and renal geotrichosis in a giant tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus).

A case of cutaneous and renal geotrichosis in a giant tortoise, Geochelone elephantopus, at the Zoological Park of Barcelona is reported. Fungal hyphae and spores were seen in skin and kidney. Culture of these tissues yielded Geotrichum candidum. This fungus was isolated from the faeces of 5 other giant tortoises that were housed with the dead animal and from specimens of corn hydroponic culture which is part of their diet. Arthrospore suspensions of the 2 strains isolated from the dead animal's skin and kidney were experimentally inoculated into mice and turtles (Testudo horsfiedi) in order t

Rol-Transformed Kalanchoë Shows Altered Root Allocation and Photosynthetic Responses to Nitrogen Deficiency.

Ri/rol transformation by Rhizobium rhizogenes is well known to alter plant architecture, including shoot compactness, branching and root development. However, its significance for plant responses to nitrogen limitation remains unclear. Here, we investigated developmental, physiological and hormonal responses of an interspecific Kalanchoë laciniata × K. blossfeldiana hybrid to nitrogen deficiency using complementary pot and hydroponic experiments. Nitrogen deficiency strongly reduced leaf area and total biomass in both wild-type (WT) and rol-transformed (Rol) plants. Nevertheless, rol transform

Evaluation of porous concrete leachate to improve water quality.

Porous concrete is increasingly explored as a multifunctional material for water quality improvement, stormwater management, and emerging agricultural applications. However, uncertainties remain regarding nutrient and trace metal leaching, particularly for freshly cast concrete. This study investigated the time-dependent leaching behavior of a bio-receptive porous concrete substrate designed for ecological and hydroponic applications. Porous concrete tiles were immersed in distilled water for a 12-week period. Weekly leachate samples were analyzed to determine Ca, P, K, S, Mg, B, Fe, Zn, and C

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Azospirillum brasilense Enhance Growth and Resource Use Efficiency of Tomato Under Resource-Limited Peat-Reduced Cultivation.

The transition towards peat-reduced and resource-efficient horticultural systems presents challenges for maintaining crop productivity because of altered nutrient dynamics and reduced microbial diversity within soilless substrates. Beneficial microbial inoculants may provide a sustainable approach to improve plant performance under reduced-input cultivation; however, their effectiveness in peat-reduced hydroponic environments remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF; Rhizophagus irregularis) and nitrogen-fixing bacteria (NFB; Azospirillum

Compact green dialysis: circular economy approach to advancing sustainability in resource-limited health-care settings.

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis is highly water-intensive, with conventional reverse osmosis systems discarding approximately 40%-70% of treated water as reject waste. Although high-recovery reverse osmosis upgrades can mitigate these losses, they are often associated with substantial capital investment. Existing green dialysis models also require considerable physical space and, when combined with additional labor costs, are frequently unsustainable, thereby limiting their feasibility across many dialysis units. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the design and performance of a compact aquaponic reuse system u

Metabolite responses of cucumber on copper toxicity in presence of fullerene C60 derivatives.

Copper (Cu) toxicity in crops is a result of excessive release of Cu into environment. Little is known about mitigation of Cu toxicity through the application of carbon-based nanomaterials including water-soluble fullerene C60 derivatives. Two derivatives of fullerene were examined: polyhydroxylated C60 (fullerenol) and arginine C60 derivative. In order to study the response of Cu-stressed plants (Cucumis sativus L.) to these nanomaterials, metabolomics analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was performed. Excess Cu (15 μM) caused substantial increase in xylem sap Cu, retarde
