Trauma to the hyoid bone and laryngeal cartilages in hanging: review of forensic research series since 1856.

Since 1856 lots of forensic reports, concerning trauma to the hyoid bone and laryngeal cartilages in hanging, have been published. Differences in percentage of injured neck complexes ranged from 0 to 83.3%. Simple arguments suggest that the reason for discrepancy is difference in scientific approach (retro- or prospective) and use of various research methods. Comparative analysis of widely used techniques shows considerable variety in their effectiveness. Plain radiography and palpatory method have fairly low sensitivity (33-60% for different elements of the neck complex) with relatively high

Morphometric features and sexual dimorphism of adult hyoid bone: a population specific study with forensic implications.

Hyoid is a U-shaped bone present in the ventral aspect of neck at the level of fourth cervical vertebra. Morphological variants of hyoid are well documented. The present study was designed to identify these morphological features and examine the sexual dimorphism of adult hyoid bone in Indian Bengali population. The present work consisted of direct measurement in autopsy cases in a population specific sample. It was observed that the hyoid was larger in males regarding width, antero-posterior length and slope of cornu. Using t-Test with alpha level of 0.05 the length of greater cornu was found

[Pharyngeal obstruction and the functional adaptation of the natural posture of the head and the hyoid bone in sleep apnea syndrome].

Variations in natural head posture (NHP) and hyoid bone (HB) positioning impart changes in the size and shape of the pharyngeal airways. In SAS, which was shown to be correlated with detrimental craniofacial anatomical conditions, control of pharyngeal permeability is lost during sleep. The aim of this study was determine if functional adaptation of NHP and HB position to these detrimental conditions could be observed, using Bonferonni probabilities, in a cephalometric comparison of 38 SAS adults in the wakeful state and a control group of 38 healthy adults. Since HB relationships with craniof

Alterations of hyoid bone position and pharyngeal depth and their relationship after surgical correction of mandibular prognathism.

The present investigation studied changes of hyoid bone position and pharyngeal depth at the levels of the second and fourth cervical vertebrae and their relationships in mandibular prognathism patients who received combined orthodontic-surgical treatment. The material consisted of presurgical and 1-year postsurgical profile cephalograms of 52 adult orthognathic surgery patients (40 females and 12 males) who initially had mandibular prognathism and had undergone bilateral vertical ramus osteotomy through an extraoral incision in the retroangular area. Hyoid bone position and pharyngeal depth w

Changes of epiglottis and hyoid bone position after orthodontic treatment with cast splint fixed functional appliances.

OBJECTIVES: Angle Class II malocclusions including a retrognathic mandible are the most frequent orthodontic problems. Both removable and fixed functional appliances can be used for mandibular advancement. Mandibular advancement after treatment with any fixed functional appliance has numerous therapeutic effects, such as stretching of masticatory muscles, ligaments, membranes and surrounding soft tissues, thus causing positional changes of the hyoid bone and epiglottis. This retrospective study investigates and compares treatment effects upon epiglottis- and hyoid bone position and posterior a

Dynamic 3D-CT angiography during swallowing for diagnosing hyoid bone or thyroid cartilage compression-induced thromboembolism.

A 76-year-old man was admitted because of visual loss in his right eye, and was diagnosed with central retinal artery occlusion. Brain MRI revealed asymptomatic acute infarctions in the right middle cerebral artery territory. The proximal right internal carotid artery had migrated into a retropharyngeal location, presenting a 50% stenosis with calcified plaques, and was compressed by the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage during swallowing on dynamic 3D-CT angiography. Partial resection of the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage was performed and the postoperative course was uneventful. This case s

Transmission of force to the hyoid bone during manual strangulation: Simulation using finite element numerical models.

INTRODUCTION: Strangulation is a medicolegal form of mechanical asphyxia, and can be difficult to identify if cutaneous damage to the neck is limited. We began by creating a numerical model of a hyoid bone with adjustable anthropometric parameters and then subjected our model to compression simulating a precision grip on the neck from the front. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected six bones from the 77 hyoid bones contained in the database we created during a previous study led by our laboratory, in which we demonstrated the sexual dimorphism of this bone and identified the minimal force requi

Computational simulations of hyoid bone position and tracheal displacement: effects on upper airway patency and tissue mechanics.

Surgical hyoid repositioning (HR) improves upper airway (UA) patency. Tracheal displacement (TD) likely influences HR outcomes, and vice versa, due to hyoid-trachea connections. This study used computational modeling to investigate the influence of TD and HR (with fixation) on UA outcomes and the impact of a lower baseline hyoid position [obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) phenotype]. A two-dimensional (2-D) finite element model of the rabbit UA simulated TD and HR (with fixation) in different directions, separately and combined. Model outcomes included UA closing pressure (Pclose), area, anteropos

A new extended supracricoid laryngectomy technique for tongue base and hyoid bone involvement: crico-glosso-mandibulopexy technique.

In the conventional supracricoid laryngectomy technique, tumors extending beyond the lingual surface of the epiglottis with tongue base invasion are contraindicated due to the requirement of the hyoid bone resection. The loss of the hyoid bone causes intractable aspiration and renders the cricoidal pexy process impossible. Therefore, surgeons tend to treat such tumors with total or subtotal laryngectomies or organ preservation protocols. In this article, a new supracricoid partial laryngectomy technique for tumors requiring resection of the hyoid bone and the base of the tongue was described.

The combined use of hyoid bone flap and radial forearm free flap for reconstruction following partial laryngopharyngectomy.

In hypopharyngeal carcinoma, even partial laryngopharyngectomy, results in functional disorders involving swallowing and speaking. We reconstructed partial defects following partial laryngopharyngectomy using a combined flap of a hyoid bone flap and radial forearm free flap. Before ablative surgery, we prepared an ipsilateral hyoid bone as a bone flap with sternohyoidal muscle. Then a radial forearm free flap was prepared simultaneously with tumor surgery. Thereafter, we reconstructed the epiglottis and pyriform recess using the combined flap. We successfully reconstructed 7 patients suffering
