Loud Music and Leisure Noise Is a Common Cause of Chronic Hearing Loss, Tinnitus and Hyperacusis.

High sound levels capable of permanently damaging the ear are experienced not only in factories and war zones but in concert halls, nightclubs, sports stadiums, and many other leisure environments. This review summarizes evidence that loud music and other forms of "leisure noise" are common causes of noise-induced hearing loss, tinnitus, and hyperacusis, even if audiometric thresholds initially remain within clinically normal limits. Given the huge global burden of preventable noise-induced hearing loss, noise limits should be adopted in a much broader range of settings, and education to promo

Severe Temporal Hyper-Activated States Caused by Noise in Tinnitus and Hyperacusis with Normal Hearing.

Lots of neuroimaging and animal studies have revealed that tinnitus and hyperacusis share the same patterns in the bottom up central auditory process. The aim was to identify the abnormal central patterns commonly observed in both tinnitus and hyperacusis in humans. We investigated two cases of normal hearing: a tinnitus patient and a hyperacusis patient. We compared the differences between the severe temporal hyper-activated state (STHS), with spikes, fast beta and gamma frequencies after noise exposure, and the mild temporal hyper-activated state (MTHS), in no sound exposed condition. The po

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Alleviating The Distress Caused By Tinnitus, Hyperacusis And Misophonia: Current Perspectives.

This article reviews the evidence related to the efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for alleviating the distress caused by tinnitus, hyperacusis and misophonia. Where available, the review was focused on meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using either passive control groups (typically waiting list or education only) or active control groups (receiving some other form of treatment). Where data from RCTs were not available, case studies and retrospective studies were reviewed. Analyses were conducted separately for studies of patients with tinnitus, hyperacusis and

Auditory Brainstem Changes in Timing may Underlie Hyperacusis in a Salicylate-induced Acute Rat Model.

Hyperacusis, an exaggerated, sometimes painful perception of loudness even for soft sounds, is a poorly understood distressing condition. While the involvement of modified gain of central auditory neurons and the influence of nonauditory brain regions are well-documented, the issue of where in the auditory system these abnormalities arise remains open, particularly when hyperacusis comes without sensorineural hearing loss. Here we used acute intraperitoneal administration of sodium salicylate (150 mg/kg) in rats, enough to produce > 10-dB decrease in acoustic startle threshold with mild hearin

Behavioural and Electrophysiological Evaluation of Loudness Growth in Clinically Normal Hearing Tinnitus Patients with and without Hyperacusis.

INTRODUCTION: The common mechanism of tinnitus, hyperacusis, and loudness perception is hypothesized to be related to central gain. Although central gain increases with attempts to compensate hearing loss, reduced input can also be observed in those with clinically normal hearing. This study aimed to evaluate the loudness growth function of tinnitus patients with and without hyperacusis using behavioural and electrophysiological methods. METHODS: The study consists of three groups with a total of 60 clinically normal hearing subjects, including the control group (10 men and 10 women; mean age

A Phenotypic Comparison of Loudness and Pain Hyperacusis: Symptoms, Comorbidity, and Associated Features in a Multinational Patient Registry.

Purpose Hyperacusis is a complex and poorly understood auditory disorder characterized by decreased tolerance to sound at levels that would not trouble most individuals. Recently, it has been suggested that individuals who experience otalgia in response to everyday sounds (termed pain hyperacusis) may differ clinically from those whose primary symptom is the perception of everyday sounds as excessively loud (termed loudness hyperacusis). Despite this theoretical distinction, there have been no empirical studies directly comparing these two populations of hyperacusis patients. Method Using data

Hyperacusis in tinnitus patients relates to enlarged subcortical and cortical responses to sound except at the tinnitus frequency.

Hyperacusis, a hypersensitivity to sounds of mild to moderate intensity, has been related to increased neural gain along the auditory pathway. To date, there is still uncertainty on the neural correlates of hyperacusis. Since hyperacusis often co-occurs with hearing loss and tinnitus, the effects of the three conditions on cortical and subcortical structures are often hard to separate. In this fMRI study, two groups of hearing loss and tinnitus participants, with and without hyperacusis, were compared to specifically investigate the effect of the latter in a group that often reports hyperacusi

Voluntary increase of acoustic middle ear impedances with simultaneous sound attenuation associated with mild hyperacusis (VIMH).

BACKGROUND: Acoustic impedances, as measured with tympanometers, change with the pressure in the middle ears, or reflexively as a response to a range of stimuli. A few persons are able to influence their acoustic impedances voluntarily. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To describe this phenomenon and its clinical consequences. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Presentation of five case reports with measurements of the acoustic impedances, hearing thresholds, and otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) in the relaxed state and while the change in acoustic impedance was invoked. RESULTS: All five subjects were able to voluntarily

A Unified Theory for the Development of Tinnitus Perception and Hyperacusis Based on Associative Plasticity in the Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus.

Background/Objectives: Tinnitus and hyperacusis can occur together or in isolation, with hyperacusis being associated with tinnitus much more frequently than vice versa. This striking correlation between tinnitus and hyperacusis prevalence implies that there might be a common origin, such as (hidden) hearing loss, and possibly interrelated neural mechanisms in the pathological development of those two conditions. Here, we propose such interrelated pathological mechanisms. Methods: This is a theoretical work based solely on considerations and published data. Results: We propose a model localize

Expanding the Phenotypic Spectrum of ERLIN1-Related SPG62: Report of Two Siblings With Behavioral Features and Hyperacusis.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia type 62 (SPG62) is a neurodegenerative disorder, with more than 20 individuals reported to date. This ultra-rare entity is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner and has been associated with ERLIN1 variants. In addition, ERLIN1-related biallelic variants have been linked to early-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We present two siblings with slowly progressive spastic paraplegia, with mild intellectual decline, behavioral findings, and hyperacusis. This study expands the clinical spectrum of hereditary spastic paraplegia associated with ERLIN1.
