Hypericum erectum is an important ethnobotanical medicine in East Asian tradition. To explore the anti-parasitic potential of H. erectum, inhibitory effects on the growth of intracellular parasite Toxoplasma and on the encystation of intestinal parasite Entamoeba were examined. The constituents in H. erectum alcoholic extracts and fractions separated by solvent-partitioning were analysed by high resolution LC-MS. Toxoplasma gondii growth inhibition assay was performed using GFP-labelled T. gondii strain PTG-GFP by measuring the fluorescence intensity. Anti-Toxoplasma drug pyrimethamine was use

A wide range of compounds that occur in the genus Hypericum are listed as effective drugs of natural origin. The main biological activities of several Hypericum representatives are due to the presence of naphthodianthrones, phloroglucinols, and other diverse groups of secondary metabolites that synergistically contribute to their therapeutic effects. The regulation of biosynthesis of hypericin as the key bioactive naphthodianthrone remains uncertain. Here, we present liquid chromatography mass spectrometry-based phenotyping of 17 Hypericum species, the results of which suggest an important rol

The aerial parts of H. perforatum subsp. perforatum and H. perforatum subsp. angustifolium were investigated for their chemical composition and antimicrobial activity. Spectrophotometric analysis indicated that H. perforatum subsp. perforatum is richer in flavonoids and tannins than the other subspecies. HPLC analysis confirmed the higher yield of flavonoids in H. perforatum subsp. perforatum and gave also a higher content of phenolic acids. H. perforatum subsp. angustifolium contained more hypericin. The presence of rutin was proven only in H. perforatum subsp. perforatum. The antimicrobial a

BACKGROUND: Hypericum perforatum extracts attenuate ethanol intake in alcohol-preferring rats. The opioid receptor antagonists, naloxone and naltrexone, reduce ethanol intake in rats and humans. The combination of different agents that reduce ethanol intake has been proposed as an approach to the pharmacotherapy of alcoholism. This study evaluated the effect on ethanol intake of the combined administration of a CO2 H. perforatum extract and naloxone or naltrexone in genetically selected Marchigian Sardinian alcohol-preferring rats.
METHODS: Ten percent (v/v) ethanol intake was offered 2 hr pe

The issue of soil contamination by heavy metals is widely acknowledged. Some plants, including medicinal species like St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L.), exhibit accumulation traits, allowing them to accumulate elevated levels of metals, e.g., cadmium (Cd), within their cells. Selenium (Se) may increase the tolerance of plants to abiotic stress caused by the presence of heavy metal in the environment. Depending on its form (oxidation state, organic/inorganic), Se influences plant growth, secondary metabolite content, and biotic stress, as well as incorporates into shoots, providing econ

In Cameroon, malaria is still the cause of several deaths yearly and leading to the continued search for new potent leads to fight against Plasmodium falciparum. Medicinal plants like Hypericum lanceolatum Lam. are introduced in local preparations for the treatment of affected people. The bioassay-guided fractionation of the crude extract of the twigs and stem bark of H. lanceolatum Lam. led to the identification of the dichloromethane-soluble fraction as the most active (with 32.6% of the parasite P. falciparum 3D7 survival) which was further purified by successive column chromatography to ob

Most scientific investigations of Hypericum perforatum L. (Saint John's wort) concentrated on its antidepressant activity. Only recently, its antibacterial activity against multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus led to speculations regarding the use of hyperforin, an antibacterial principle of hypericum, as an antibiotic. In the present investigation, we show that Staphylococcus aureus is able to acquire a resistance against hyperforin which did not lead to a cross resistance against clinically used antibiotics. Resistance development does not take place, however, at concentrations as low as the

St. John's Wort is a medicinal plant increasingly used for its antidepressive activity. Hypericins are considered as one of the compounds contributing to the activity of the extract. These naphthodianthrones exist in various forms in Hyperici herba. Protopseudohypericin and protohypericin (protopigments) are converted into pseudohypericin and hypericin (pigments) under the action of light. The aim of this work is to study the influence of light on the phototransformation of protopigments into pigments. Two experiments were carried out. The studies were performed on one hand, on plant material

St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) is a medicinal and aromatic plant of rapidly increasing importance. The cultural production of this species, which is of economic importance due to its medicinal properties, is limited. One of the main ways to increase production is to develop cultivars. Thus, the homogeneous raw material required for a standard product will be provided. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of natural populations to obtain productive cultivars with high hypericin and hyperforin that can meet market demands. In addition to yield and quality values, other ch
