Hyperspectral imaging combined with DBO-SVM for the germination prediction of thermally damaged seeds.

Healthy development of the maize seed industry plays a key role in the effective supply of agricultural products and ensures national food security. Thermal damage to seeds significantly affects crop yield, seed vitality and nutritional value, making it crucial to identify maize seed germination potential before sowing. In this study, 100 thermally damaged and 100 normal maize seeds were selected, and spectral data were collected using a hyperspectral imaging system. The samples were divided into training and test sets in a 3 : 1 ratio. Spectral information in the range of 963.27-1698.75 nm wa

Laparoscopic hyperspectral imaging for in vivo detection of the vagal nerve in upper gastrointestinal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Accurate intraoperative detection of nerves in critical anatomic regions during oncologic resection, such as the vagal nerve, is crucial. The vagal nerve regulates many internal organs and is at risk during surgeries, potentially leading to severe complications. While different types of intraoperative neuromonitoring methods exist for functional assessment, Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) offers a non-invasive, real-time alternative for morphologic identification. This study is, to our knowledge, the first to assess laparoscopic HSI for imaging and delineating the vagal nerve during mi

Hyperspectral Imaging-A Novel Tool to Assess Tissue Perfusion and Oxygenation in Esophageal Anastomoses.

Anastomotic stricture and leakage are common complications after repair of esophageal atresia (EA). A compromised perfusion of the anastomosis is a contributing factor. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is an ultrashort noninvasive method to measure tissue perfusion. We present two cases of with tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF)/EA repair, in whom we applied HSI: the first patient was a newborn with EA type C who underwent open TEF repair. The second one had an EA type A and cervical esophagostomy, in whom we performed gastric transposition. In both patients, HSI confirmed a good tissue perfusion of t

Intraoperative hyperspectral imaging (HSI) as a new diagnostic tool for the detection of cartilage degeneration.

To investigate, whether hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is able to reliably differentiate between healthy and damaged cartilage tissue. A prospective diagnostic study was performed including 21 patients undergoing open knee surgery. HSI data were acquired during surgery, and the joint surface's cartilage was assessed according to the ICRS cartilage injury score. The HSI system records light spectra from 500 to 1000 nm and generates several parameters including tissue water index (TWI) and the absorbance at 960 nm and 540 nm. Receiver operating characteristic curves were calculated to assess test p

Tongue Tumor Detection in Hyperspectral Images Using Deep Learning Semantic Segmentation.

OBJECTIVE: The utilization of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in real-time tumor segmentation during a surgery have recently received much attention, but it remains a very challenging task. METHODS: In this work, we propose semantic segmentation methods, and compare them with other relevant deep learning algorithms for tongue tumor segmentation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work using deep learning semantic segmentation for tumor detection in HSI data using channel selection, and accounting for more spatial tissue context, and global comparison between the prediction map, and t

Hyperspectral imaging in perfusion and wound diagnostics - methods and algorithms for the determination of tissue parameters.

Blood perfusion is the supply of tissue with blood, and oxygen is a key factor in the field of minor and major wound healing. Reduced perfusion of a wound bed or transplant often causes various complications. Reliable methods for an objective evaluation of perfusion status are still lacking, and insufficient perfusion may remain undiscovered, resulting in chronic processes and failing transplants. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) represents a novel method with increasing importance for clinical practice. Therefore, methods, software and algorithms for a new HSI system are presented which can be use

Detection and delineation of squamous neoplasia with hyperspectral imaging in a mouse model of tongue carcinogenesis.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) holds the potential for the noninvasive detection of cancers. Oral cancers are often diagnosed at a late stage when treatment is less effective and the mortality and morbidity rates are high. Early detection of oral cancer is, therefore, crucial in order to improve the clinical outcomes. To investigate the potential of HSI as a noninvasive diagnostic tool, an animal study was designed to acquire hyperspectral images of in vivo and ex vivo mouse tongues from a chemically induced tongue carcinogenesis model. A variety of machine-learning algorithms, including discrimi

Polarized hyperspectral and polarized light microscopic imaging for enhanced visualization of white blood cells.

SIGNIFICANCE: White blood cells (WBC) are hematopoietic cells of the immune system that protect the body by recognizing and eliminating infectious agents. Abnormalities in WBC production, maturation, or function can lead to disease and associated morphologic changes that, when systematically characterized, support diagnostic classification and clinical decision-making. AIM: We aim to investigate polarized hyperspectral imaging (PHSI) and polarized light imaging (PLI) microscopy for the visualization of WBCs. APPROACH: We developed a dual-modality microscopic imaging system that performs both

Fast-hyperspectral imaging remote sensing: Emission quantification of NO2 and SO2 from marine vessels.

Marine vessels play a vital role in the global economy; however, their negative impact on the marine atmospheric environment is a growing concern. Quantifying marine vessel emissions is an essential prerequisite for controlling these emissions and improving the marine atmospheric environment. Optical imaging remote sensing is a vital technique for quantifying marine vessel emissions. However, the available imaging techniques have suffered from insufficient detection accuracy and inadequate spatiotemporal resolution. Herein, we propose a fast-hyperspectral imaging remote sensing technique that

Polarized Hyperspectral Microscopic Imaging for White Blood Cells on Wright-Stained Blood Smear Slides.

White blood cells, also called leukocytes, are hematopoietic cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious diseases and foreign materials. The abnormal development and uncontrolled proliferation of these cells can lead to devastating cancers. Their timely recognition in the peripheral blood is critical to diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we developed a microscopic imaging system for improving the visualization of white blood cells on Wright's stained blood smear slides, with two different setups: polarized light imaging and polarized hypersp

Hyperspectral Imaging Provides Early Prediction of Random Axial Flap Necrosis in a Preclinical Model.

BACKGROUND: Necrosis remains a significant complication in cutaneous flap procedures. Monitoring, and ideally prediction, of vascular compromise in the early postoperative period may allow surgeons to limit the impact of complications by prompt intervention. Hyperspectral imaging could be a reliable, effective, and noninvasive method for predicting flap survival postoperatively. In this preclinical study, the authors demonstrate that hyperspectral imaging is able to correlate early skin perfusion changes and ultimate flap survival in a preclinical model. METHODS: Thirty-one hairless, immunoco

A Triple-Perception Adaptive Network for In Vivo Organ Recognition Using Diffuse Reflectance Hyperspectral Imaging.

Near-infrared diffuse reflectance hyperspectral imaging (HSI), as an emerging noninvasive imaging technology, captures organ-specific spectral information, but the spectrum may be different between individuals and changes with physiological states. A triple-perception adaptive network, termed as TriAd, is developed for in vivo organ recognition in zebrafish by correcting interindividual variability arising from variations in experimental conditions and developmental stages. TriAd incorporates three complementary branches designed to extract organ-specific hyperspectral features from images. A

Toward near real-time precise supervision of radiofrequency ablation for liver fibrosis using hyperspectral imaging.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Chronic liver diseases pose a significant global health concern, ranking as the 11th leading cause of death worldwide. It often progresses to organ fibrosis and severe complications such as portal hypertension and cirrhosis. Liver transplantation is the most effective treatment for such diseases, however, the persistent shortage of donors highlights the need for alternatives. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a promising alternative since it is a minimally invasive procedure. RFA uses heat to destroy abnormal tissues. Its benefits include reduced recovery time compared to s
