Chronic sensory and autonomic neuropathy.

A man with sensory neuropathy had evidence of autonomic failure: abnormal pupils, hypohidrosis, esophageal dilation, diarrhea, hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, sphincter disturbance, and impotence. Functional tests revealed abnormalities of both sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, mainly postganglionic. Autopsy revealed degeneration of posterior columns, posterior nerve roots, posterior root ganglia, and peripheral nerves. Degeneration was also observed in the sympathetic trunk, vagal nerve, and myenteric plexus. Neurons in the intermediolateral columns were preserved. Progressive se

A case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a rare, hereditary, congenital disease that affects several ectodermal structures. It is characterised by the following: anhidrosis or hypohidrosis, dental abnormalities, hypotrichosis, and a characteristic facies. The face shows prominent frontal bosses, supraorbital ridges and depressed bridges. We experienced a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia in a 43-year-old male who had four characteristic features. A skin biopsy from the palm showed a total absence of the eccrine glands. The diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical features and skin

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with atrophic rhinitis and nasal myiasis.

Hypohidrotic/anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a rare inherited disorder characterized by hypohidrosis/anhidrosis, hypotrichosis, dysodontia and heat intolerance. Most common mode of transmission is X-linked recessive, showing complete expression in males, and only partial manifestations in the female carrier heterozygotes. Features like atrophic rhinitis, nasal and aural myiasis, syndactyly, cleft lip and/or palate, mental retardation and immunodeficiency are uncommonly seen in this syndrome. We hereby report a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with unusual features of atrophic rhini

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease associated with autonomic nervous system dysfunction in the early stage.

A 54-year-old man presented with tremor and unusual behavior. He was admitted two months later because of dementia and myoclonus. Periodic synchronous discharges were observed on the electroencephalogram. Based on these findings, we diagnosed the case as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. About two weeks after admission, decubitus, bowel dysfunction and hypohidrosis occurred. We observed various autonomic nervous system dysfunctions such as abnormal pupillary response to autonomic drugs, reduced coefficient of variation of R-R interval, and abnormal diurnal blood pressure variation.

HELIX syndrome in childhood. A claudinopathy with a salt-wasting tubulopathy phenotype with hypermagnesemia.

The thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (TAL) reabsorbs approximately 30% of filtered NaCl through two mechanisms: transepithelial and paracellular reabsorption. The latter is carried out through a class of tight junction proteins known as claudins. A mutation in the gene encoding claudin-10 causes a rare salt-wasting tubular disorder with hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. However, unlike Bartter syndrome and Gitelman disease, it usually presents with hypermagnesemia and extrarenal manifestations such as xerostomia, alacrima, and hypohidrosis with ichthyosis, known by the acronym HELIX sy

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: a case report.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a common variation of ectodermal dysplasia, characterized by hypohidrosis (or anhidrosis), hypotrichosis, hypodontia, and other distinct facial features. Furthermore, ocular tissues of ectodermal origin may also be affected in this disease. The most common ocular manifestations of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia are dry eye, madarosis, alterations in the meibomian glands, abnormalities in the nasolacrimal duct, and infantile glaucoma. Herein, author reports a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia in a 12-year-old Indian boy with dry eye and lacrimal s

Unusual physical features and heat stroke presentation for hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Hypohidrotic/ anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is characterized by hypotrichosis (sparseness of scalp and body hair), hypohidrosis (reduced ability to sweat), and hypodontia (decreased tooth development). Sweating is either absent or greatly deficient leading to an increased risk for hyperthermia. This is a relatively common genetic condition; it is estimated that 1 in approximately 5000–10 000 newborns has HED (Wright et al., 2009). Here, we report an infant with HED who presented with a heat stroke-like condition in the extreme winter months of Michigan.

The first report of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia caused by a novel mutation and accompanied with pathological femoral neck fracture: A case report.

RATIONALE: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a rare inherited disorder characterized by hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis, and hypodontia. Most cases are caused by mutations in the EDA signaling pathway, whereas TP63-related HED is extremely rare. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of HED caused by a novel TP63 mutation presenting with a pathological femoral neck fracture. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 31-year-old woman presented with progressive left hip pain and inability to bear weight for 2 weeks without a history of trauma. She had a lifelong history of hypohidrosis, heat intoler

Degranulation and shrinkage of dark cells in eccrine glands and elevated serum carcinoembryonic antigen in patients with acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis (AIGA) is characterized by anhidrosis/hypohidrosis without other autonomic and neurological dysfunctions. Pathologically, AIGA is considered to usually present no significant morphological alterations in eccrine glands, the secretory portion which consists of clear cells, dark cells, and myoepithelial cells. AIGA patients recently have been reported to show high serum concentrations of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). OBJECTIVE: Our aim is to reveal morphological abnormalities of dark cells and investigate their relationship with serum CEA

Serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as a clinical marker in acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis: a close correlation between serum CEA level and disease activity.

BACKGROUND: Hypohidrosis/anhidrosis are congenital or acquired sweating impairments. Among them, acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis/hypohidrosis (AIGA) is the most common, and characterized by favourable response to systemic corticosteroid, however, no clinical markers for disease severity or activity have been developed. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to verify the usefulness of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level monitoring as a clinical marker for disease activity of AIGA. METHODS: Ten cases of AIGA diagnosed at Asahikawa Medical University, from 1980 to 2014 were included in the s

Quantification of sweat gland innervation in patients with Fabry disease: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Hypohidrosis and heat intolerance, frequently reported by men and women with Fabry disease (FD), is thought to be related not only to the deposition of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) in eccrine sweat glands, but also to reduced sweat gland sympathetic innervation. METHODS: We performed a case-control study to compare the density of sweat gland innervation between patients with FD and healthy controls by examining lower leg skin punch biopsies. We used a standardized grid of circles superimposed upon the immunofluorescent specimen to create a simple pattern of circles over the sweat

Compound heterozygous missense mutations p.Leu207Pro and p.Tyr544Cys in TGM1 cause a severe form of lamellar ichthyosis.

TGM1 is the most common gene responsible for lamellar ichthyosis. Previous studies have suggested that patients with lamellar ichthyosis carrying two missense mutations in TGM1 show significantly less severe phenotypes than those with at least one truncating mutation in TGM1. Here, we report a patient with severe lamellar ichthyosis who was compound heterozygous for TGM1 missense mutations, including a novel one. A 22-year-old Japanese man presented with large, dark brown, plate-like scales on the extremities and small adherent scales on the face and trunk. His other clinical findings included
