What distinguishes patients with mass social media-induced illness presenting with Tourette-like behavior from those with Tourette syndrome? Results of a prospective cohort study.

Since 2019, a global increase in patients presenting with functional Tourette-like behaviors (FTB) has been observed. This has been related to the exposure of tic-related content in social media, although other factors seem to further fuel this phenomenon. Recently, we, therefore, proposed the term mass social media-induced illness (MSMI) as, in our opinion, this phenomenon constitutes a new type of mass sociogenic illness (MSI) that is in contrast to all recent outbreaks spread solely via social media. In accordance with this hypothesis, we were able to identify the host of the German YouTube

Sex differences in the associations between illness representations and behavioral intentions to seek early Alzheimer's detection in Chinese older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in older adults with no cure. Early detection and intervention are critical for improving patient outcomes. However, behavioral intentions to seek early detection of AD (BI-SEDAD) remain low. Illness representations, referring to individuals’ beliefs about illness, may influence BI-SEDAD. This study aimed to investigate the associations between illness representations and BI-SEDAD among Chinese older adults, and potential sex differences in these associations. METHODS: A survey was conducted among 509 Chinese older adults

The Relationships between Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors, Hopelessness, and Illness Acceptance Levels Diagnosed with Peripheral Artery Disease and Related Factors.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a chronic condition that requires prolonged and consistent management. Failure to recognize the necessity for prolonged treatment and care may result in a lack of acceptance of the disease, feelings of hopelessness, and a lack of emphasis on healthy living, which can lead to an unmanageable disease, serious complications, increased care costs, elevated mortality, and morbidity rates. The objective of this study is to examine the relationships between healthy lifestyle behaviors (HLBs), hopelessness, and illness acceptance levels among individuals

Long-Term Follow-Up of Patients with Mass Social Media-Induced Illness Presenting with Functional Tic-like Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Only little is known about the prognosis of functional tic-like behaviors (FTLB), especially in the subgroup of patients with mass social media-induced illness (MSMI-FTLB). OBJECTIVES: To provide data of long-term follow-up (FU) of a carefully characterized group of patients with MSMI-FTLB to identify influencing factors such as treatment, exposure to social media, and comorbidities. METHODS: At FU (mean = 26.3 (range = 11-51) months after baseline), 30 patients (mean age = 22.5 years, n = 18 (60%) female) underwent an extensive semi-structured interview. RESULTS: The majority o

COVID-19 Emergency Reforms in Massachusetts to Support Behavioral Health Care and Reduce Mortality of People With Serious Mental Illness.

People with serious mental illness are at disproportionate risk of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality because of high rates of risk factors that directly parallel those related to poor coronavirus outcomes, including smoking, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, along with housing instability, homelessness, food insecurity, and poverty. Community-based behavioral health organizations are also at risk of adverse outcomes because of dramatic declines in revenues and a diminished workforce. The State of Massachusetts has responded to this crisis by rapidly im

Lower Nerve Growth Factor Levels in Major Depression and Suicidal Behaviors: Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Recurrence of Illness.

UNLABELLED: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and its severe subtype, major dysmood disorder (MDMD), are distinguished by activation of inflammatory and growth factor subnetworks, which are associated with recurrence of illness (ROI) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Nerve growth factor (NGF) plays a crucial role in facilitating neuro-immune communications and may regulate the inflammatory response. METHODS: The present study examined the effects of ACEs and ROI on culture supernatant NGF, stem cell factor (SCF), stem cell GF (SCGF), hepatocyte GF (HGF), and macrophage colony-stimulatin

Transgenerational impairment of hippocampal Akt-mTOR signaling and behavioral deficits in the offspring of mice that experience postpartum depression-like illness.

Postpartum depression (PPD) has adverse effects on offspring and increases their vulnerability to psychiatric disorders such as depression. Akt-mTOR signaling in the hippocampus is implicated in depression but its role in the behavioral deficits in PPD offspring remains unknown. By using a prepregnancy stress model of PPD in which Balb/c females that experience chronic stress before pregnancy show long-lasting PPD-like behaviors, we tested depression-like behaviors in PPD offspring (PPD-F1) at juvenile and adult ages as well as in the second generation (PPD-F2) produced by cross of male PPD-F1

Heart-focused anxiety, illness beliefs, and behavioral impairment: comparing healthy heart-anxious patients with cardiac and surgical inpatients.

Psychological features and complaints of persons presenting to medical settings with heart-focused anxiety and noncardiac chest pain are poorly understood. Comparing 20 healthy heart-anxious patients to cardiac and surgical inpatients and nonpatient controls, we found that healthy heart-anxious patients (a) were as afraid of chest pain and heart palpitations as inpatients with heart disease, (b) were as incapacitated by symptoms and using medical services as much as both inpatient groups; and (c) reported higher levels of cardiac disease conviction, heart awareness, and behaviors designed to p

Prognoses about vocational achievement behavior of first admitted psychiatric patients under special consideration of the diagnoses of depressive illnesses.

In this study prognoses about the posthospital vocational achievement behavior of 55 first admitted depressive patients were made at the time of discharge. With a structured and standardized questionnaire the patients themselves, the treating physicians, and the nurses were interviewed. As a first step of analysis the prognoses of the three groups were compared with each other and tested in respect of differences. This comparison was made with other psychiatric diagnoses too, whereby endogenic depressive patients and neurotic depressive patients were discriminated. In the second step of analys

Prevalence and phenomenology of violent ideation and behavior among 200 young people at clinical high-risk for psychosis: an emerging model of violence and psychotic illness.

In a previously reported longitudinal study of violent ideation (VI) and violent behavior (VB) among 200 youths at clinical high-risk (CHR) for psychosis, we found that VI, hitherto underinvestigated, strongly predicted transition to first-episode psychosis (FEP) and VB, in close temporal proximity. Here, we present participants' baseline characteristics, examining clinical and demographic correlates of VI and VB. These participants, aged 13-30, were examined at Columbia University Medical Center's Center of Prevention and Evaluation, using clinical interviews and the structured interview for

Illness Perception Mediation and Disease Characteristics Moderation of the Relationship Between Health Literacy and Self-Care Behaviors in Chronic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) is widely recognized as a determinant of self-care behaviors in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Grounded in the Common-Sense Model of Self-Regulation, illness perception may serve as a cognitive intermediary in this relationship, yet which specific dimensions carry this role in CKD remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mediating roles of illness perception dimensions in the relationship between CKD-specific HL and self-care behaviors and explored how demographic and disease characteristics moderated this pathway. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sect

Differences in health self-management behaviors among residents with illnesses across remote islands with different degrees of isolation from the mainland.

Objective: Owing to geographic isolation, limited healthcare services, and aging populations, residents with illnesses living on highly isolated islands may engage more actively in health self-management. However, this assumption has not been empirically examined. The aim of this study was to compare health self-management behaviors among residents with illnesses according to the degree of island isolation. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted in clinics on four remote islands administered by Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, between July and August 2025. Participan

Positive Psychological Changes by Cognitive-Behavioral Stress Management with Writing and Sharing Experiences in Individuals with Chronic Mental Illness: A Qualitative Study.

Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of benefit finding, cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM), and expressive writing, this study qualitatively explored positive psychological changes in a group psychotherapeutic program for individuals with chronic mental illness. Participants attended weekly 90-minute small-group sessions. Positive psychological changes through participation were elicited through semi-structured interviews and an open-ended questionnaire item, and the data were analyzed qualitatively. Of the 14 valid participants, 10 were men, and the average age was 42.6 years. I

Chronic Illness Perceptions and Cardiovascular Disease Risk Behaviors in Black and Latinx Sexual Minority Men with HIV: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Ethnic and racial sexual minority men with HIV have a disproportionately higher risk of HIV-related cardiovascular disease (CVD). There is a lack of tailored and culturally salient behavioral interventions to address HIV-related chronic illness in ethnic and racial sexual minority men, and literature on their understanding and awareness of modifiable behavioral risks is limited. The purpose of this study was to assess illness perceptions about HIV and HTN, and describe physical activity, tobacco, and e-cigarette use in Black and Latinx sexual minority men living with HIV. Hybrid and Remote Psychosocial Interventions Focused on Weight and Sedentary Behavior Management Among Patients with Severe Mental Illnesses: a Systematic Review.

Severe mental illness could be defined through its diagnosis, disability, and duration, and one of their main characteristics is the high prevalence of some clinical conditions such as obesity and metabolic syndrome. Although the promotion of a healthier lifestyle has been demonstrated as an effective strategy to reduce both body mass index and abdominal circumference in this population, there is a lack of studies focusing on digital intervention in this population. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the efficacy of studies that used digital technologies to reduce weight, body m

The mechanisms between illness representations of COVID-19 and behavioral intention to visit hospitals for scheduled medical consultations in a Chinese general population.

Testing the Common-Sense Model, this random telephone survey examined the associations between illness representations of COVID-19 and behavioral intention to visit hospitals for scheduled medical consultations (BI-VHSMC), and the mediations via coping and fear of nosocomial infection among 300 Chinese adults. The prevalence of BI-VHSMC was 62.3%. Mediation analysis found that maladaptive coping (rumination and catastrophizing) and fear of nosocomial infection mediated the associations between various dimensions of illness representations of COVID-19 (e.g. consequence and controllability) and
