(Un)imaginable (Para-)athletes: A Discourse Analysis of Athletics Websites in Canada.

This Foucauldian discourse analysis engages DePauw's theory of disability and visibility to examine the construction of para-athletes within the websites of Canada's "fully integrated" athletics sport system. The authors found that para-athletes remain largely unimaginable within most athletics websites. When present, para-athletes are often only imagined as marginal participants, or marginalized through medical and charitable discourses. The authors offer examples of para-athletes being reimagined primarily as athletes, and some examples where (para-)athletics was reimagined by identifying an

Imagining eye care in India (2018 Lalit Prakash Agarwal lecture).

India has done well in eye care delivery by recognizing visual impairment and blindness as a major medical challenge. Major contributions have come from ophthalmologists (mass cataract surgery in the early 1900s; major participation of non-government organizations), policy makers (National Program for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment 1976; systematic development under the World Bank assisted India Cataract Project, 1995-2002), and the industry (manufacturing of affordable surgical instruments and medicines). Although the country could boast of higher cataract surgical coverage and ne

Dissociation between executed and imagined bimanual movements in autism spectrum conditions.

UNLABELLED: Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) are characterized by social-communicative deficits and repetitive stereotyped behaviors. Altered motor coordination is also observed and a dysfunction of motor imagery has been recently reported on implicit tasks. However, no information on explicit motor imagery abilities is available in ASC. Here, we employed a spatial bimanual task to concurrently assess motor coordination and explicit motor imagery in autism. A secondary objective of the study was to evaluate these abilities across two populations of ASC, namely adolescents and adults with ASC.

Reproductive Biology of Triatoma brasiliensis (Hemiptera, Triatominae) During the Imaginal Molt.

The triatomines are vectors of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, etiologic agent of Chagas disease. These insects are sexually active after the imaginal molt. Some aspects have been studied in Triatoma brasiliensis during the imaginal molt, such as autogeny in virgin females and the relationship between blood ingestion by fifth instar nymph and the realization of the imaginal molt. Thus, to aid in the understanding of reproductive biology and developmental physiology of these vectors, this article analyzes the spermatogenesis of T. brasiliensis during the imaginal molt. The analysis of the semi

Plunging into the pool of death: imagining a dangerous outcome influences distance perception.

We examined whether manipulating the imagined consequences of falling would influence the perception of height, distance, and size. In experiment 1, height and size perception were measured when participants stood at a short height (0.89 m) or a medium height (1.91 m) above either an empty pool or a pool filled with a bed of nails. Participants who viewed the bed of nails and imagined falling into it estimated both the height as taller and the size of the bed of nails as larger than participants who imagined falling into an empty pool. In a second experiment, participants overestimated the hor

Olfactory reference syndrome: demographic and clinical features of imagined body odor.

OBJECTIVE: Olfactory reference syndrome (ORS) - preoccupation with a false belief that one emits a foul or offensive body odor - has been described around the world for more than a century. However, only a few small studies have systematically assessed ORS's clinical features. METHOD: Twenty patients with ORS were systematically assessed using semistructured measures. RESULTS: Subjects' mean age was 33.4±14.1; 60% were female. Preoccupation most often focused on the mouth (75%), armpits (60%) and genitals (35%). Bad breath (75%) and sweat (65%) were the most common odor descriptions. Current

Imagining inoculation: Smallpox, the body, and social relations of healing in the eighteenth century.

People in colonial New York adopted inoculation for smallpox as quickly and as thoroughly as did people anywhere in the British Atlantic world. Such adoption was not dependent upon the authority of formal medicine, but rather upon everyday epistemology. Inoculation became accepted as local knowledge because ordinary New Yorkers integrated it imaginatively into common ideas about the body and disease, reconceptualized its theological meaning, and incorporated it into familiar social relations of healing.

Imaging bodies, imagining relations: narratives of queer women and "assisted conception".

This article is based on ethnographic research conducted between 1998 and 2000 in British Columbia, Canada. In this article Luce brings together the narratives of queer women she interviewed about their experiences of trying to become parents with her own stories about doing the research. Both sets of stories explore the ways in which relationships between people are reproduced and represented through images of sexuality, reproduction, queerness, parents, and families. Shifting between telling about the tensions she experienced while doing ethnographic fieldwork and retelling women's stories a

Visceral larva migrans and alveolar hydatid disease. Dangers real or imagined.

For both visceral larva migrans and alveolar hydatid diseases, it is the feces of companion animals that are the primary source of human infection. Clearly, whatever is done to reduce this form of environmental contamination and the prevalence of the parasites' infective stages will help to protect the health of the human population in the United States and Canada, particularly the children. Very important are appropriate anthelmintic treatment programs, especially for T. canis, and proper control of close associations between pets and people. Probably the known incidence of visceral larva mig

Interrogating Speculative Futures: The Politics of Imagining Futures With(out) Chronic Illness.

We introduce the empirical papers in this special issue, each of which presents a different mode of speculation in the context of living with, and caring for, chronic conditions: "educated guesswork" about covid reinfection, "ambivalent speculations" in learning to live "at risk" with Barrett's Esophagus and "retrospective speculation" in pressure ulcer prevention. We reflect on how they together contribute to current thinking on the politics of time in health and medicine, and wider conversations in medical anthropology and beyond, about chronic illness as both a lived everyday reality and pa

Experience of Responding to Imaginative Suggestions: A Micro-Phenomenological Interview Exploratory Study.

The micro-phenomenological interview is a technique for investigating phenomenology in detail during an activity lasting seconds to minutes. Here, we applied it to understanding the moment-to-moment experiences of subjects responding to imaginative suggestions that were aimed at temporarily altering perceived reality through deployment of phenomenological control. Our intention was to generate novel hypotheses that could be tested in a future study. We presented three suggestions individually to seven participants, and then interviewed them about their experiences, with the qualitative finding

AGI imagined: social AGI and the co-formation of human-AGI society.

The AI industry is advancing toward an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that will possess cognitive capabilities that are equal to or stronger than those of humans. While a purely computational AGI may be cognitively powerful, it will probably struggle to understand the human social environment. This gap needs both a theoretical and an applicative solution. This article provides the theoretical solution, specifying what such an AGI must contain and how it must be formed. We propose a theoretical construct of an AGI that will not only be computational but will also be capable to develop in

A visual imagery paradigm for BCI strategies using imagined flickering patterns.

Steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs) are a popular type of control signals in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), in which they are typically elicited by observing a visual stimulus flashing at a specific frequency. For some patients, using SSVEP as control signal for a BCI can be difficult, for instance if they are unable to focus their gaze over the visual stimuli. To address this issue, some approaches were presented to design a gaze-independent SSVEP-controlled BCI but some difficulties have been reported, for instance for patients suffering from locked-in syndrome. In this work

Imaginative Vulnerability and Symbolic Mediation: A Phenomenological Analysis in Schizophrenia-Spectrum Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Imagination depends on symbolic mediation that sustains an as-if mode of experience. In schizophrenia-spectrum conditions, this mediation is structurally vulnerable, rendering imaginative activity unstable under intensified activation. Arts-based interventions have rarely specified the conditions under which imaginative activity remains symbolically mediated rather than becoming overwhelming. The present study examines how imaginative vulnerability is regulated in group-based creative writing. METHODS: The analysis draws on retrospective phenomenological interviews with 50 parti

The relationship between transliminality, hypnotic and imaginative suggestibility, and other personality traits.

To our knowledge, no study has directly examined the link between hypnotic response and the personality trait of transliminality (which is underpinned, for example, by magical ideation, mystical experience, fantasy proneness, absorption, hyperaesthesia). In order to further understand the correlates of suggestibility, the aim of the current project was to investigate whether transliminality is associated with hypnotic and imaginative suggestibility (considering: objective response, subjective response and involuntariness). Another aim was to assess the contribution of transliminality as a pred

Examining Community Clinicians Use of Imaginal Exposure with Childhood Anxiety Disorders.

Although community therapists rarely use exposure when treating youth with anxiety disorders, they are more likely to endorse the use of imaginal exposure, relative to in vivo or interoceptive exposure. Such use of imaginal exposure could reflect a sub-optimal replacement for in vivo exposure or a targeted intervention to address anxiety-provoking thoughts, such as in generalized anxiety disorder. The current study used the survey responses of 178 community-based clinicians to examine these competing hypotheses. The results indicated that therapist endorsement of more clearly defined imaginal

Comparison of clinical and magnetic resonance imagining data of patients with temporomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: There are important criteria in the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). These become significant if supported by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Otherwise, these findings alone may not be sufficient to diagnose TMD. AIM: This study compared the relationship between clinical findings indicated by patient and physician and MRI results in the diagnosis of TMD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical examinations were performed in patients suspected of TMD for pain, difficulty in mouth opening, masticatory muscle tenderness, deviation (during mouth opening), normal mouth openi
