Perceptual differences in fetal alcohol effect boys performing a modeling task.

Perceptual differences were examined for four boys identified with fetal alcohol effect (FAE) and labeled learning disabled for educational purposes. Without a model, all FAE boys built asymmetrical building block designs with no stacking of blocks. When the boys were shown a short videotape of a peer building a simple symmetrical structure with one-layer stacking of blocks, none of the FAE boys successfully imitated. They continued to place blocks randomly on the floor surface with no stacking or layering. This limited study suggests modeling perceptual tasks may not be an effective teaching

The executive and ideational components of apraxia.

Fifty six left brain-damaged (LBD) patients and 38 right brain-damaged (RBD) patients were requested to perform two measures of praxis using the hand ipsilateral to the side of lesion. One task required the accurate imitation of actions made by the examiner and taxed executive abilities; the other task required the patient to pantomime the use of objects that were shown, but not handed, and it also involved an ideational component, i.e., the evocation of gestures. The cut-off point discriminating a normal from a pathological performance was set at the level of the poorest score found in 60 con

The Influence of Suggestibility, Positive Expectancy, and Identification on Resilience (INSPIRE) Model.

Since the early 2010s, increasing rates of youth self-harm and suicide-related behavior in many high-income countries have raised urgent questions about underlying drivers. One well-recognized yet incompletely understood factor is social transmission (contagion). Here we posit the influence of suggestibility, positive expectancy, and identification on resilience (INSPIRE) model and propose that suggestibility, expectancy, and identification drive both harmful (Werther effect) and protective (Papageno effect) social transmission in youth. Building on established frameworks including Durkheim's

Hemispheric asymmetries in the control of upper limb movements.

This chapter deals with the unique human abilities of using tools, imitating others' gestures, drawing, and building complex items. Herein, after a brief overview of clinical manifestations and assessment of disorders of tool use and imitation (upper limb apraxia) and of the impairments in drawing and assembling multipart objects (constructional apraxia), brain asymmetries are discussed mainly starting from the neuropsychologic studies on patients with focal brain lesions, although both upper limb apraxia and constructional apraxia are often observed during the course of neurodegenerative dise

Verbalization in EMR children's observational learning.

The effect of descriptive verbalization during observation of a model on mentally retarded boys' retention for what they had observed was examined. Forty 9- to 12-year-old boys in public-school EMR classes were grouped on the basis of relatively high or low IQ scores. One-half of each group observed a videotaped model perform a series of novel acts, while in addition to viewing the tape, the other half described the model's actions. Observational learning was immediately tested through a set of prompts for imitation, with prizes offered commensurate with level of performance. Regardless of IQ

DSM-5 symptom expression in toddlers.

Children with autism show more social-communication symptoms and repetitive behaviors than children with typical development or those diagnosed with other developmental disorders; however, non-autistic children often show some behaviors that are associated with autism. We compared the behavioral reports from caregivers of children in these three groups to identify the behaviors that were specific to autism. Children with autism were found to show more of these behaviors, and behaviors that are particularly indicative of autism were identified. These behaviors included social symptoms (approach

Enhancing stimulability: a treatment program.

Recent research on stimulability and generalization suggests that treatment of nonstimulable sounds results in maximum treatment gains (Powell, Elbert, & Dinnsen, 1991). It has also been suggested, however, that nonstimulable sounds are more difficult to teach, especially to young children with very small phonetic inventories. In this article, we describe a treatment program designed to increase the size of the phonetic inventory by "teaching" stimulability. Application of the treatment approach is demonstrated in a case study.

School shooting as a culturally enforced way of expressing suicidal hostile intentions.

Suicide with hostile intent encompasses a wide range of behaviors, from self-killing by methods that can harm others, to the suicide that generally follows a spree-killing raid. Reports on school shooting, a highly dangerous and lethal behavior that is spreading from North America to European countries, are analyzed within the paradigm of suicide with hostile intent, with the purpose of discovering some elements that might prevent and limit the dissemination of this behavior by imitation. In school shooting, the perpetrators often register a message before their killing raid, as in an ancient

Looking good versus doing good: which factors take precedence when children learn about new tools?

We present two experiments exploring whether individuals would be persuaded to imitate the intentional action of an adult model whose actions suggest that the correct way to complete a task is with an inefficient tool. In Experiment 1, children ages 5-10years and a group of adults watched an adult model reject an efficient tool in favor of one that was inefficient, but claim it was "made for" the task. Results indicated low rates of imitation of the model's intentional choice until 9 and 10years of age. In Experiment 2, children ages 3-11years again watched a model reject a functional tool in

The Influence of Mimicry on the Reduction of Infra-Humanization.

The paper investigates the role of mimicry in the reduction of infra-humanization. Mimicry as an automatic imitation of a partner's behavior (this is known as "social glue") connects people (Miles et al., 2010). Empirical findings have confirmed that mimicry leads to favorable treatment of the mimicker (Van Baaren et al., 2003). The mechanism is reciprocal: the mimicker is more positively inclined towards the person mimicked (Chartrand and Bargh, 1999). Mimicry increases the sense of interpersonal closeness, reciprocal similarity, and facilitates the flow of interaction and helping behavior (S

Auditory Cortex Morphology Predicts Language Learning Potential in Children and Teenagers.

In two recent studies, we identified neuroanatomical and neurofunctional markers of musical aptitude, attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder and dyslexia in the auditory cortex (AC) of children. In a subsequent study with adults, we found evidence for neuroanatomical correlates of speech imitation ability in right Heschl's gyrus (HG), a structure comprising primary and parts of secondary AC. In the present study, we aimed to verify this previously suggested link between structural variation of right HG and language aptitude in a younger population of children and teenagers (N = 42; age ran

The environmental dependency syndrome, imitation behaviour and utilisation behaviour as presenting symptoms of bilateral frontal lobe infarction due to moyamoya disease.

The environmental dependency syndrome, imitation behaviour and utilisation behaviour may be the earliest and most subtle signs of bifrontal lobe dysfunction. A case is described in which these signs constituted the predominant deficits. The lesions responsible were bifrontal infarcts caused by moyamoya disease. The patient made an excellent recovery.

Black-hole-inspired thermal trapping with graded heat-conduction metadevices.

The curved space-time produced by black holes leads to the intriguing trapping effect. So far, metadevices have enabled analogous black holes to trap light or sound in laboratory spacetime. However, trapping heat in a conductive environment is still challenging because diffusive behaviors are directionless. Inspired by black holes, we construct graded heat-conduction metadevices to achieve thermal trapping, resorting to the imitated advection produced by graded thermal conductivities rather than the trivial solution of using insulation materials to confine thermal diffusion. We experimentally

Infant twins' social interactions with caregivers and same-age siblings.

The study of twin behavior offers the opportunity to study differential patterns of social and communicative interactions in a context where the adult partner and same-age peer are equally familiar. We investigated the development of social engagement, communicative gestures, and imitation in 7- to 25-month-old twins. Twin dyads (N=20 pairs) participated in 10-min, semi-structured play sessions, with the mother seated in a chair completing paperwork for half the session, and on the floor with her children for the other half. Overall, twins engaged more with their mothers than with their siblin

Choral speech: the amelioration of stuttering via imitation and the mirror neuronal system.

'Choral' speech or speaking in unison is an undeniable phenomenon that immediately induces fluent and natural sounding speech in almost all people who stutter, regardless of linguistic content, situation or audience size. We propose that the choral speech effect is a form direct imitation, a primitive and innate human capacity that is possibly mediated at the neuronal level by 'mirror neurons'. Mirror systems link observations and actions are considered by many to be a neuronal substrate for gestural language acquisition, as well as forming the basis for many learned behaviors, thus possibly p

Reward and Imitation in Social Conformity.

PURPOSE: Normative social conformity has been proposed to elicit a hedonic reward signal that is dissociable from informational inferences about decision outcomes. If present, such a signal should reinforce not just the decision that preceded it but also incidental, contextual, and stimulus features. Here, we pit this account against a non-hedonic imitation algorithm. METHOD: Across two studies (n = 359), we used a nondeceptive three-participant gambling task in which trial-by-trial information was provided about the selections and monetary payoffs of two other participants facing the same, r

The teleological stance: Past, present, and future.

We review the support for, and criticisms of, the teleological stance theory, often described as a foundation for goal-directed action understanding early in life. A major point of contention in the literature has been how teleological processes and assumptions of rationality are represented and understood in infancy, and this debate has been largely centered on three paradigms. Visual habituation studies assess infant's abilities to retrospectively assess teleological processes; the presence of such processes is supported by the literature. Rational imitation is a phenomenon that has been que

Mirror neuron dysfunction in autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are developmental conditions characterized by deficits in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and obsessive/stereotyped patterns of behaviour. Although there is no reliable neurophysiological marker associated with ASDs, dysfunction of the parieto-frontal mirror neuron system has been suggested as a disturbance linked to the disorder. Mirror neurons (MNs) are visuomotor neurons which discharge both when performing and observing a goal directed action. Research suggests MNs may have a role in imitation, empathy, theory of mind and language. Al

Freedom and rules: the acquisition and reprogramming of a bird's learned song.

Canary song is hierarchically structured: Short stereotyped syllables are repeated to form phrases, which in turn are arranged to form songs. This structure occurs even in the songs of young isolates, which suggests that innate rules govern canary song development. However, juveniles that had never heard normal song imitated abnormal synthetic songs with great accuracy, even when the tutor songs lacked phrasing. As the birds matured, imitated songs were reprogrammed to form typical canary phrasing. Thus, imitation and innate song constraints are separate processes that can be segregated in tim
