Investigating 3D Selection Performance While Running in Extended Reality: an In-depth Study of the Effect of Speed.

We explore how running speed affects target selection in immersive environments. Through a Fitts' tapping task, we investigate direct touch selections while participants are standing or running (at speeds up to 9 km/h). We conduct a multifaceted controlled study (n=22) to understand the effect of speed, pointing phase, and foot-strike on selection performance. We find that speed dramatically increases movement time, error rate, perceived exertion, and task load. The increased movement time is driven by the correction phase, which doubles in duration at 9 km/h, while the ballistic phase remains

Effects of single- and bilateral limb immersion on systemic and cerebral hemodynamic responses to the cold pressor test.

The cold pressor test (CPT) involves cold water immersion of either the upper or lower limb(s) and elicits increases in sympathetic nervous activity (SNA), heart rate (HR), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) via stimulation of pain and cutaneous thermoreceptors. Greater pain perception during the CPT is associated with greater increases in SNA and more robust physiological responses. Due to potential differential sensitivity to both painful and thermal stimuli between upper and lower limbs, as well as potential effects of total exposure area, it is unclear whether the choice of limb(s) in CPT pr

Suspected stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) envenomation on Reunion Island.

INTRODUCTION: Envenomations induced by stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) stings are among the most painful envenomations in the marine environment. Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean is not spared from these envenomations. The aim of this series is to characterize suspected cases of stonefish envenomation and to describe the associated clinical management. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational series of suspected stonefish envenomations recorded into the database of the Indian Ocean toxicovigilance Department between 1 January 2020 and 2 June 2024 on Reunion Island. Data on clinical ch

Vascular compartment syndromes.

In a 5-year period (1968 to 1973) 33 cases of vascular compartment syndrome were seen. Seven case reports illustrate various etiopathogenetic factors in the development of vascular compartment syndrome. A review of the 33 cases has permitted discussion of the pathophysiology and clinical features of these syndromes, together with introduction of a clinical classification on which treatment is based. Mild cases may be treated by application of ice, elevation, and observation; for severe cases fasciotomy is the treatment of choice. Two techniques of fasciotomy are available: multiple skin incisi

[Concealed exclusion of perforant and varicose veins of lower extremities venous insufficiency (communication II)].

The second and the third elements of surgical treatment of a varicose disease and chronic venous insufficiency by concealed exclusion of perforant and varicose subcutaneous veins are outlined. The exclusion of perforant veins of the shin is limited by the zone of Achilles (sub- and retromalleolar) cellular space in muscular channel of the lower extremity. Blunt supra- and infrafascial dissection of cellular tissue with passing there extramuscular perforant veins is performed between two incisions-punctures of the skin of internal surface of the shin at the level of 7 and 20 cm from the sole of

Insidious hypothermia during raft use.

It is commonly thought that increasing protection against cold water results in greater physiological efficiency in maintaining core temperature. To examine the relationship of physiological changes resulting from cold exposures as a function of increased insulation, five subjects (4 males, 1 female) wearing anti-exposure ensembles covering the entire body and head were exposed in a pool to water temperatures (Twater) = 4.4 degrees C and air temperatures (Tair) = 5.6 degrees C. Trials consisted of subjects undergoing either head-out immersions with mean exposure time (t = 150 +/- 9 S.E.M. min)

Basement membrane charge in human glomerular disease.

Fixed anionic charges in the mammalian glomerulus, on both the basement membrane and the epithelial cell foot processes, are believed to form an important part of the glomerular filtration barrier. There is good evidence that their loss causes proteinuria. The charges can be visualized ultrastructurally using cationic dyes, but the requirement of these techniques for perfusion or immersion of fresh tissue has largely confined such studies to experimental models. We have extended the widely used polyethyleneimine technique, to study the charge of glomerular basement membranes in human tissue re

The Use of High-Risk Criteria to Assess Mortality Risk among Unsheltered Homeless Persons.

We assessed the ability of high-risk criteria developed by Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program to identify increased mortality during a 10-year cohort study (January 2000-December 2009) of 445 unsheltered adults. To qualify as high-risk for mortality, an individual slept unsheltered for six consecutive months or longer plus had one or more of the following characteristics: tri-morbidity, defined as co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and addiction diagnoses; one or more inpatient or respite admissions; three or more emergency department visits; 60 years old or older; HIV/AIDS; cirrhosis

Pressor tests in clinical pharmacology: response morphology heterogeneity.

Heart rate, blood pressure and venous plasma catecholamine responses to passive upright tilt, immobile erect standing, upright sitting, immersion of hand or foot in cold water, isometric handgrip and delayed auditory feedback were assessed in young healthy volunteers. Each of the tests was characterized by its own typical response morphology. Postural stress caused mainly a rise in heart rate and diastolic blood pressure with little change in systolic blood pressure. The cold pressor test caused a rapid rise in heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure which then was attenuated on furt

[Turnover of brain histamine and its changes by various drugs].

Histamine (HA) is synthesized from L-histidine by histidine decarboxylase (HDC), and HA released from neurons is predominantly methylated to tele-methylhistamine (t-MH), which is further metabolized by MAO. Therefore, the HA turnover rate is determined by either a exponential decrease in HA level after treatment with alpha-fluoromethylhistidine (alpha-FMH), a specific HDC inhibitor, or a linear accumulation of t-MH after pargyline treatment. Brain HA and t-MH can be simultaneously assayed using HPLC with fluorometric detection. Care should be given to avoid the contamination by extraencephalic

Deep neural networks to predict foraging behaviour: saltwater immersion data can accurately predict diving in seabirds.

The accurate identification of foraging locations is critical for wildlife conservation. While remote sensing and biologging devices provide much of the necessary data, their deployment is often complicated by factors such as weight, battery life and sensor capacity, limiting their effectiveness for long-term tracking of wide-ranging species. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of saltwater immersion data from light-level geolocation loggers (global location sensor; GLS) as a predictor of foraging behaviour in a pursuit-diving seabird, the red-footed booby (Sula sula rubripes). Using

Opposite effects of opioid blockade on the blood pressure-pain relationship in depressed and non-depressed participants.

The effect of the opioid antagonist naltrexone on the relationship between blood pressure and pain was examined in 24 participants with major depressive disorder and 31 non-depressed controls, before and after 25 min of stressful mental arithmetic. Pain was induced by immersing the non-dominant foot in 2 degrees C ice-water for as long as possible or until 4 min had elapsed (the cold pressor test). Blood pressure was measured before each cold pressor test, and at 2-min intervals during mental arithmetic. In the group as a whole, neither depression nor naltrexone influenced blood pressure at an

The heel of achilles: calcaneal avulsion fracture from a gunshot wound.

Greek mythology relates that the legendary warrior Achilles was made invincible by his mother Thetis, who dipped him in the River Styx while holding him by his heel. Because his heel was never immersed, it remained his one area of vulnerability. After the fall of Troy, Achilles met his demise when he was shot in the heel by Paris, whose arrow was guided by the Greek god Apollo. This is the derivation of the term "Achilles tendon." Avulsion fractures of the tuberosity of the calcaneus are rare injuries. Schonbauer reviewed a series of 870,000 accident cases treated at the Vienna Trauma Hospital

Repeatability of a cold stress test to assess cold sensitization.

BACKGROUND: Non-freezing cold injury (NFCI) is a syndrome in which damage to peripheral tissues occurs without the tissues freezing following exposure to low ambient temperatures. AIMS: To assess the test-retest reliability of a cold stress test (CST) used to assess cold sensitization. METHODS: Volunteers with no self-reported history of NFCI undertook the CST on three occasions. Thermal images were taken of the foot and hand before, immediately after and 5min after immersion of the limb in cold water for 2min. Cold sensitization was graded by the two clinicians and the lead author. Spot tem

Facilitatory and inhibitory pain mechanisms are altered in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Preliminary evidence from studies using quantitative sensory testing suggests the presence of central mechanisms in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) as apparent by widespread hyperalgesia. Hallmarks of central mechanisms after nerve injuries include nociceptive facilitation and reduced endogenous pain inhibition. Methods to study nociceptive facilitation in CTS so far have been limited to quantitative sensory testing and the integrity of endogenous inhibition remains unexamined. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate changes in facilitatory and inhibitory processing in pa

Ethnic differences in thermoregulatory responses during resting, passive and active heating: application of Werner's adaptation model.

For the coherent understanding of heat acclimatization in tropical natives, we compared ethnic differences between tropical and temperate natives during resting, passive and active heating conditions. Experimental protocols included: (1) a resting condition (an air temperature of 28°C with 50% RH), (2) a passive heating condition (28°C with 50% RH; leg immersion in a hot tub at a water temperature of 42°C), and (3) an active heating condition (32°C with 70% RH; a bicycle exercise). Morphologically and physically matched tropical natives (ten Malaysian males, MY) and temperate natives (ten Japa

Lower limb cold exposure induces pain and prolonged small fiber dysfunction in Fabry patients.

In Fabry disease, an X-linked alpha-galactosidase A deficiency, painful crises and limb paresthesias are possibly linked to thermal exposure. Small nerve fiber function has not yet been tested after cold challenge. In two Fabry patients (15 and 17 years old), their heterozygote mother, their healthy sister, and eight controls, we determined warm and cold perception thresholds at the dorsal foot and the lower medial calf (method of limits, Somedic-Thermotest), before and 1, 5, 10 and 15 min after 30 s immersion of one leg into 5 degrees C water. Discomfort was rated from 0 to 10. At baseline, t

[Stretching the triceps surae muscle after 40 degrees C warming in patients with cerebral palsy].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Equinus in patients with cerebral palsy results from at least two factors: excessive contracture of the triceps surae and muscle retraction. Tendon surgery and progressive lengthening techniques using plaster walking boots can provide variable improvement in retraction. We compared the effect of this technique when applied with or without prior 40 degrees C warming in the same patients. We also assessed the efficacy of this treatment method in terms or degree of retraction, patient age, puberty maturity, and sex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This series included 70 muscles in

A 3-D whole-body human thermoregulatory model to simulate cold-induced vasodilation in the hands and feet.

The cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) response of the human body to Arctic-like environments helps delay or prevent cold injuries to peripheral regions, such as the hands and feet. To more comprehensively predict the thermal responses of these body regions to cold stress, here we extended our previously developed and validated anatomically accurate three-dimensional whole-body thermoregulatory human model by incorporating a new phenomenological formulation of the CIVD mechanism. In this formulation, we modulated the cyclic vasodilation and vasoconstriction flow of warm blood from the body core

Evaluation of Polyvinyl Alcohol/Cobalt Substituted Hydroxyapatite Nanocomposite as a Potential Wound Dressing for Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) caused by diabetes are prone to serious and persistent infections. If not treated properly, it will cause tissue necrosis or septicemia due to peripheral blood vessel embolism. Therefore, it is an urgent challenge to accelerate wound healing and reduce the risk of bacterial infection in patients. In clinical practice, DFUs mostly use hydrogel dressing to cover the surface of the affected area as an auxiliary treatment. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a hydrophilic hydrogel polymer widely used in dressings, drug delivery, and medical applications. However, due to its weak
