Treatment Engagement and Trait and Behavioral Impulsivity Among Males and Females with Conduct Problems.

Few studies have empirically tested if trait and behavioral impulsivity hinder treatment engagement (TE), which is unfortunate since TE is crucial for treatment success. Therefore, this study collected data from 16- to 17-year-old males (n = 322) and females (n = 110) residing in Flemish youth detention centers or residential (secured) care institutions. Dimensions of TE (i.e., readiness to change, bond with staff, collaboration on goals and tasks, and therapeutic engagement) and trait impulsivity (i.e., positive and negative urgency, sensation seeking, lack of premeditation, and lack of perse

Behavior as a window to the mind - objective daily life assessment of attention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: For decades, researchers have been searching for objective laboratory markers to measure and define attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. However, in clinical practice, the most commonly used tools are still psychological scales, which are neither objective nor laboratory-based. This reliance on scales may stem from the fact that they are currently the only available method in this field for collecting daily-life data, and such data plays an irreplaceable role in defining mental disorders. Fortunately, wearable devices now offer the possibility of collecting objective daily

Gambling behavior in Parkinson's Disease: Impulsivity, reward mechanism and cortical brain oscillations.

Psychopathological components, such as reward sensitivity and impulsivity, and dopaminergic treatment are crucial characteristics related to the development of Pathological Gambling (PG) in Parkinson's Disease (PD). The aim of the present study is to investigate the differences in decision-making in PD patients with or without PG considering both neurophysiological and behavioral aspects. The IOWA Gambling Task (IGT) and electroencephalographic (EEG) activity were considered to elucidate the decision and post-feedback processes in PG. The sample included fifty-two PD patients, divided in three

Stealing behavior and impulsivity in individuals with kleptomania who have been arrested for shoplifting.

OBJECTIVES: Kleptomania is characterized by strong urges to steal and is one of only a few psychiatric disorders defined by illegal behaviors, but the clinical characteristics of individuals with kleptomania who have faced legal consequences due to their behavior are poorly understood. METHOD: From 2001 to 2012, we recruited 107 adult participants with DSM-IV kleptomania. Participants with a history of shoplifting-related arrest (N=82) were compared with those who had no such history (N=25) on demographics, clinical features, and a self-report measure of impulsivity. RESULTS: Participants wh

Adding thin-ideal internalization and impulsiveness to the cognitive-behavioral model of bulimic symptoms.

This study evaluated the cognitive-behavioral (CB) model of bulimia nervosa and an extension that included two additional maintaining factors - thin-ideal internalization and impulsiveness - in 327 undergraduate women. Participants completed measures of demographics, self-esteem, concern about shape and weight, dieting, bulimic symptoms, thin-ideal internalization, and impulsiveness. Both the original CB model and the extended model provided good fits to the data. Although structural equation modeling analyses suggested that the original CB model was most parsimonious, hierarchical regression

Associations between impulsivity and high risk sexual behaviors in dually diagnosed outpatients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: It is unknown whether impulsivity is associated with risky sexual behavior in dually diagnosed clients. METHODS: Impulsivity in 51 sexually-active, dually diagnosed clients was assessed by the Barrett Impulsivity Scale, Delayed Discounting Questionnaire, and Wisconsin Card-Sorting Task, and a path analysis of relationship to self-reported risk behaviors was conducted. RESULTS: Recent cocaine use was correlated with risky sexual behaviors and a preference for immediate over larger, delayed rewards trended towards a correlation. CONCLUSION AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: T

Probing compulsive and impulsive behaviors, from animal models to endophenotypes: a narrative review.

Failures in cortical control of fronto-striatal neural circuits may underpin impulsive and compulsive acts. In this narrative review, we explore these behaviors from the perspective of neural processes and consider how these behaviors and neural processes contribute to mental disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, and impulse-control disorders such as trichotillomania and pathological gambling. We present findings from a broad range of data, comprising translational and human endophenotypes research and clinical treatment trials, focus

Behavioral models of impulsivity in relation to ADHD: translation between clinical and preclinical studies.

Impulsivity, broadly defined as action without foresight, is a component of numerous psychiatric illnesses including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mania and substance abuse. In order to investigate the mechanisms underpinning impulsive behavior, the nature of impulsivity itself needs to be defined in operational terms that can be used as the basis for empirical investigation. Due to the range of behaviors that the term impulsivity describes, it has been suggested that impulsivity is not a unitary construct, but encompasses a variety of related phenomena that may differ in th

Callous-unemotional traits, impulsivity, and emotional processing in adolescents with antisocial behavior problems.

Examined the emotional reactivity of adolescents with antisocial behavior problems using a lexical decision paradigm. Evidence from adult forensic samples indicates that psychopathic traits are associated with abnormalities in the processing of emotional stimuli. In an attempt to extend these findings earlier in development, this association was tested in a sample of adolescents (mean age = 16.01; SD = 1.32) referred to a diversion program for delinquent behavior. Emotional processing was assessed by comparing recognition time for emotional words, both positive and negative, to recognition tim

Alcohol cue-induced heart rate variability and drinking behavior: The role of impulsivity.

Research has demonstrated that exposure to alcohol-related cues (e.g., sight or smell of a preferred beverage) elicits heightened self-reported craving and psychophysiological responses, including changes in heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), particularly among individuals high in trait impulsivity. While cue-induced psychophysiological reactivity is well documented, its predictive value for drinking behavior, particularly in individuals with elevated impulsivity, has received more limited empirical attention. The present study examined whether trait impulsivity predicts cardiov

The prevalence of impulsive compulsive behaviors in patients treated with apomorphine infusion: a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Impulsive compulsive behaviors (ICBs) can affect a significant number of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. OBJECTIVE: We have studied brain samples from a brain bank of PD patients who received apomorphine via continuous infusion in life to assess the prevalence and outcome of ICBs. METHODS: A search on the Queen Square Brain Bank (QSBB) database for cases donated from 2005 to 2016 with a pathological diagnosis of idiopathic PD was conducted. Notes of all donors who used apomorphine via continuous infusion for at least three months were reviewed. Clinical and demographic data we

From impulses to maladaptive actions: the insula is a neurobiological gate for the development of compulsive behavior.

Impulsivity is an endophenotype of vulnerability for compulsive behaviors. However, the neural mechanisms whereby impulsivity facilitates the development of compulsive disorders, such as addiction or obsessive compulsive disorder, remain unknown. We first investigated, in rats, anatomical and functional correlates of impulsivity in the anterior insular (AI) cortex by measuring both the thickness of, and cellular plasticity markers in, the AI with magnetic resonance imaging and in situ hybridization of the immediate early gene zif268, respectively. We then investigated the influence of bilatera

Losing control: assaultive behavior as a predictor of impulse control disorders in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Assaultive behaviors are common among young people and have been associated with a range of other unhealthy, impulsive behaviors such as substance use and problem gambling. This study sought to determine the predictive ability of single assaultive incidents for impulse control disorders, an association that has yet to be examined, especially in young adults. METHODS: The authors conducted a university-wide email survey in the spring of 2011 on 6000 university students. The survey examined assaultive behavior and associated mental health variables (using a clinically validated scree

Impulsive and compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease: a one-year follow-up study.

Impulsive and compulsive behaviors (ICBs) have been reported to occur frequently in Parkinson's disease (PD) and include impulse control disorders (ICDs), punding and dopamine dysregulation syndrome (SSD). We report on the outcomes of 25 PD patients who developed ICBs. Information was collected on changes in parkinsonian and psychiatric medication follow-up (median=12.1 months). At time 1, only 18 patients (72%) were taking dopamine agonists (DA). At time 2, fifteen patients (83.33%) either discontinued or decreased their DA treatment. Of these patients, thirteen (86.67%) reported experiencing

Genome-Wide Association Studies of Delay Discounting and Impulsive Personality Traits in Children From the Adolescent Behavior and Cognitive Development Study.

Impulsivity, often operationalized as delay discounting (DD) and as impulsive personality traits via the UPPS-P scales, is a key transdiagnostic construct across psychiatric disorders. Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have studied the genetic basis of impulsivity in adults, but it remains unclear how similar the genetic architecture of DD is in children. The present study conducted GWAS of DD and impulsivity traits in 5548 children (ages 9-10 years old) of genetically inferred European ancestry from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. Heritability estimates fo
