Medication overload: A closer look at polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medications among older people in Taiwan and Japan.

BACKGROUND: Polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) are widely recognized as vital quality indicators of pharmacotherapy in older adults. As Taiwan and Japan grapple with the ongoing challenges of population aging, obtaining an accurate understanding of the prevalence of these indicators is crucial for developing effective strategies to optimize pharmacotherapy in older populations. The present study aims to comprehensively evaluate the prevalence of polypharmacy and PIMs in Taiwan and two Japanese cohorts, shedding light on the similarities and differences in prescribing

Decreasing trends in potentially inappropriate medications in older people: a nationwide repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Potentially Inappropriate Medications (PIMs) and polypharmacy are widely used indicators of suboptimal prescribing for older people. The aim of this study was to describe the changes in the prevalence of PIMs and polypharmacy among people aged 75 years and over between 2011 and 2019 in France. METHODS: PIMs and polypharmacy were assessed among people aged 75 years and over every two years between 2011 and 2019 using the French health insurance data system. Sixteen PIM criteria from the 2015 Beers and STOPP lists were assessed. Polypharmacy (5 to 9 drugs) and hyper-polypharmacy (≥1

[The indicator »drugs that should be avoided in older people« from a medical perspective – an analysis with the patient in focus].

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors γ (PPARγ) is a member of nuclear receptor superfamily, and studies have demonstrated that dysregulation of PPARγ was associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which is one of the most common metabolic abnormalities occurring during pregnancy. However, the results regarding the associations between PPARγ and GDM were conflicting among different studies. The present study aimed to determine the expression of PPARγ in adipose and placenta from GDM women in a Chinese population and to further explore the role of PPARγ in GDM women. The adipose

Polypharmacy and potentially-inappropriate medications are prevalent in the elderly cancer patients receiving systemic cancer therapy and they co-relate with adverse outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Cancer is the disease of the ageing. Most of the elderly cancer patients have pre-existing illnesses requiring complexity of medical care. Excessive medications would lead not only futility, but also result in adverse outcomes especially if such over-prescription is not appropriate. This study was intended to determine the prevalence of polypharmacy (PP) and potentially-inappropriate medications (PIMs) among elderly cancer patients eligible for active cancer care and their associations with hospitalization and mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study c

Associations Between Potentially Inappropriate Medications and Adverse Health Outcomes in the Elderly: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Background: Adverse drug outcomes in the elderly have led to the development of lists of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs), such as the Beers criteria, and these PIMs have been studied widely; however, it is still unclear whether PIM use is predictive of adverse outcomes in older people. Objective: To qualitatively examine the associations between exposure to PIMs from the general Beers criteria and the Screening Tool of Older Persons' Prescriptions list and adverse outcomes, such as adverse drug reactions (ADRs)/adverse drug events (ADEs), hospitalization, and mortality. A cluster randomized stepped-wedge trial to de-implement unnecessary post-operative antibiotics in children: the optimizing perioperative antibiotic in children (OPerAtiC) trial.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic-resistant infections have become a public health crisis that is driven by the inappropriate use of antibiotics. In the USA, antibiotic stewardship programs (ASP) have been established and are required by regulatory agencies to help combat the problem of antibiotic resistance. Post-operative antibiotic use in surgical cases deemed low-risk for infection is an area with significant overuse of antibiotics in children. Consensus among leading public health organizations has led to guidelines eliminating post-operative antibiotics in low-risk surgeries. However, the best stra

[Detecting and assessing the impactof anticholinergic medications].

Limitation of inappropriate prescribing must be a medical concern in daily practice especially in older patients. In particular, anti-cholinergic drugs (anti-ACh), which are not all explicitly classified as anti-ACh, are commonly prescribed for a wide range of indications (pulmonary obstructive diseases, anxiety, insomnia, urinary incontinence, Parkinson's disease, congestive heart failure). Their prescription is however associated with a reduced quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality. Tools detecting inappropriate prescriptions and clinical scales that quantify the anti-ACh bur
