Factors associated with caregiver burden of toileting assistance at home versus in a nursing home: A cross-sectional study.

This study aimed to identify differences in caregiver burden related to toileting assistance, and examine the factors associated with the most burdensome aspects of providing toileting assistance. In 2019, a self-administered postal survey was conducted with 743 caregivers of older adults who received subsidies for continence products in Komatsu City, Japan. Both family caregivers and nursing home staff answered questions regarding older adults' urinary/fecal symptoms, toileting assistance, and perceived caregiver burden. Older adults living at home had less need for toileting assistance than

[Subjective and objective success of Burch's method of colpo-suspension concerning continence, satisfaction and micturition pattern].

OBJECTIVE: A comparison of subjective and objective continence and satisfaction after Burch colposuspension in patients with stress incontinence. SETTING: Department of gynaecology, Ikazia Hospital Rotterdam, the Netherlands. DESIGN: Retrospective. METHODS: 61 patients completed a questionnaire with 9 questions about incontinence and micturition, comparing the pre- and postoperative situations. Satisfaction was scored on a five-point scale. Objective continence and micturition frequency were measured with a pad test during ambulatory urodynamics (n = 29). RESULTS: The response was 100%, sa

Long-term assessment of the incontinence ring pessary for the treatment of stress incontinence.

A prospective cohort of 38 women who presented with predominantly stress incontinence symptoms were fitted with an incontinence ring pessary. They had documented stress incontinence on multichannel urodynamic testing. Nine women (24%) were not leaking by subjective measures. Six women (16%) continued using the pessary. This group of women had no statistically identifiable parameters that distinguished them from women who had not wanted to continue using the pessary. There was a trend showing that successfully fitted women were younger (41 vs 52 years old), had less pelvic surgery and leaked le

Impact of early self-clean intermittent catheterization in orthotopic ileal neobladder: prospective randomized study to evaluate functional outcomes, continence status and urinary tract infections.

BACKGROUND: Urinary diversions after radical cystectomy (RC) have a significant impact on quality of life and body image. Particularly for orthotopic neobladder (ONB), the rate of continence, urinary retention and urinary tract infections can impact on patient's quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate whether early clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) might improve functional outcomes, continence status, and reduce the incidence of UTIs in patients with ONB. METHODS: In this prospective randomized study patients were divided in two groups. Patients were on a standard pos

Faecal incontinence.

Faecal incontinence is a disorder predominantly of the elderly. It is one of the more unpleasant consequences of failing health in old age, both for the sufferer and for the care giver. There are many potential colorectal and anal disorders capable of contributing to or causing faecal incontinence. However, in the elderly, there are two major causes: faecal loading and neurogenic incontinence. Rectal examination is mandatory for all patients with faecal incontinence as it allows the detection of local anorectal abnormalities (not only impaction or faecal loading) which may be responsible for t

Cough-induced leak-point pressure--a valid measure for assessing treatment in women with stress incontinence.

BACKGROUND: Presently available urodynamic methods are of little use for assessing the severity of urinary stress incontinence or for evaluating of treatment, Cough-induced leak-point pressure may prove to be a more useful urodynamic method in these respects. A vaginal anti-incontinence device was used to validate this new urodynamic method. AIM: The primary aim was to determine the extent to which cough-induced leak-point pressure was affected by the vaginal device. Secondary aims were to study the short-term effects of the vaginal device on leakage and urinary flow, and to relate the change

The correlations of incontinence-related quality of life measures with symptom severity and pathophysiology in women with primary stress urinary incontinence.

PURPOSE: We sought to explore the correlations of incontinence-related quality of life (QoL) measures with the symptom severity and pathophysiological factors for female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 707 women who had primary SUI. Clinical data for analysis included Ingelman-Sundberg scales, 1-h pad tests, incontinence-related QoL questionnaires comprising short forms of the Urogenital Distress Inventory (UDI-6) and Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (IIQ-7), ultrasound assessment of urethral support and urethral sphincter function deter

Sacral nerve neuromodulation in the treatment of patients with refractory motor urge incontinence: long-term results of a prospective longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: Conservative treatment rarely results in a durable cure of patients with urge incontinence and bladder overactivity. Instrumental and surgical procedures often have significant side effects and less than optimal results. We developed a technique of sacral nerve neuromodulation using chronic unilateral electrical stimulation of the S3 sacral nerve to inhibit the micturition reflex to provide effective nondestructive alternative therapy for patients whose condition is refractory to conservative treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 85 patients 45 who responded to a test with a temporary

Impact of bariatric surgery on urinary incontinence in morbidly obese individuals.

BACKGROUND: There is scanty evidence on the impact of bariatric surgery on urinary incontinence (UI) in the Asian population. METHODOLOGY: Patients who underwent bariatric surgery from June 2018 to June 2019 were screened using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence-Short Form (ICIQ-UI-SF) questionnaire. Patients having UI were identified and followed until 1 year of surgery using the ICIQ-UI-SF. These were classified as having stress, urge, or mixed type of UI. The prevalence, change in scores, and the number of pads used were compared at baseline a

[Does a Combined Fascial Sling - Burch Colposuspension Display Advantages over a Fascial Sling alone for Treatment of Urinary Stress Incontinence in Females?].

PURPOSE: Despite the development of new surgical techniques, the fascial sling procedure remains an important surgical technique for the treatment of female urinary stress incontinence. An advantage of combining it with an additional Burch colposuspension has been suggested. The objective of our study was to evaluate retrospectively selected patients who had undergone a fascial sling procedure with and without Burch colposuspension. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of a total of 390 females who underwent an incontinence operation at our department between 1990 and 1999, 56 patients had had a fascial sl

The effect of multiple layers of linens on surface interface pressure: results of a laboratory study.

Underpads and layers of linens are frequently placed under patients who are incontinent, have other moisture-related issues, and/or are immobile and cannot reposition independently. Many of these patients are also at risk for pressure ulcers and placed on pressure-redistribution surfaces. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of linens and incontinence pads on interface pressure. Interface sacral pressures were measured (mm Hg) using a mannequinlike pelvic indenter that has pressure transducers integrated into the unit and is covered with a soft flesh-like elastomer. The indente

Review of current technologies for urinary incontinence: strengths and limitations.

A wide range of continence products is available, and this paper focuses on products to prevent incontinence (such as urinals and commodes) and to contain or manage urinary incontinence (such as absorbent pads, penile sheaths and urethral catheters). Drawing on results from published clinical evaluations at the Continence Product Evaluation Network at UCL and at other centres, the strengths and limitations of the major categories of incontinence products currently on the market are reviewed. It is concluded that, although products for continence have improved considerably over the last 20 year

Improving Male Sling Selectivity and Outcomes-A Potential Role for Physical Demonstration of Stress Urinary Incontinence Severity?

INTRODUCTION: We reviewed our 9-year experience with AdVance™ Male Sling System cases to determine clinical features associated with treatment success and to refine procedure selectivity. We hypothesized that preoperative physical demonstration of stress urinary incontinence by the standing cough test improves patient selection for male sling surgery. METHODS: Retrospective review of primary AdVance sling surgeries between 2008 and 2016 was performed. Patients without standing cough test results were excluded from study. Success was defined as 1 pad per day or less postoperatively and no furt

Effectiveness of artificial urinary sphincter to treat stress incontinence after prostatectomy: A meta-analysis and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) has always been considered the gold standard for surgical treatment of male non-neurogenic Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate AUS's effectiveness in treating male SUI, as described in the literature. METHODS: Two independent reviewers used PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, CNKI, WanFang Data, and VIP databases, to find the efficacy of artificial urethral sphincter in treating SUI after male prostate surgery. We excluded studies on female urinary incontinence. The main purpose of this study was to ev

Association Between Preoperative Membranous Urethral Length and Urinary Continence Recovery After Retzius Sparing Robotic Assisted Radical Prostatectomy: Results From a Retrospective Single-Center Study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) remains a common complication after radical prostatectomy, even with advancements such as robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). Preoperative membranous urethral length (MUL) has been suggested as a predictor of early continence recovery, but its role in Retzius Sparing RARP (RSRARP) remains unclear. This study evaluated the association between preoperative MUL and early postoperative UI in patients undergoing RSRARP. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 157 patients who underwent RSRARP between March 2024 and February 2025 at a high-volume center

Autologous muscle precursor cell injection into the bladder neck improves the symptoms of stress urinary incontinence in adult females.

BACKGROUND: The transplantation of autologous muscle precursor cells (MPCs) is effective in the regeneration of muscle in multiple pathologies. This phase I clinical trial sought to use MPCs to treat stress urinary incontinence (UI). METHODS: Female patients with either stress urinary incontinence (SUI) or congenitally acquired UI had thigh muscle biopsies prior to MPC expansion and processing. The MPCs were injected directly into the bladder neck. Symptoms were measured using pad weight tests (1-h and 3-day), baseline questionnaires (Urogenital Distress Inventory [UDI-6], Incontinence Impact
