Feral cats do not play a major role in leptospirosis epidemiology on Reunion Island.

Although previous studies have reported Leptospira carriage in kidneys and urine of cats, the role of these animals in leptospirosis epidemiology remains poorly understood. Using molecular methods, we investigated Leptospira renal carriage in 172 feral cats from Reunion Island, an oceanic geographically isolated island located in the South West Indian Ocean. Only one out of the 172 analysed specimens tested positive for Leptospira DNA through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Using this positive sample, we could obtain sequences at three Leptospira loci (rrs2, lipL32 and lipL41

East African diploid and triploid bananas: a genetic complex transported from South-East Asia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Besides bananas belonging to the AAA triploid Mutika subgroup, which predominates in the Great Lakes countries, other AAA triploids as well as edible AA diploids, locally of considerable cultural weight, are cultivated in East Africa and in the nearby Indian Ocean islands as far as Madagascar. All these varieties call for the genetic identification and characterization of their interrelations on account of their regional socio-economic significance and their potential for banana breeding strategies. METHODS: An extensive sampling of all traditional bananas in East Africa

Confirmation of the identity of the type host of the louse Halipeurus fallacis (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae).

Alexander (1954: 489) recorded a petrel (Aves: Procellariiformes) captured alive on board a ship in the Indian Ocean by Mr W.W.A. Phillips who, after removing some lice, liberated it the following morning. Alexander (1954) identified that petrel as the species "Pterodroma aterrima Bonaparte", now placed in the genus Pseudobulweria. The lice were kept in the collection of the then British Museum (Natural History), now the Natural History Museum, London, England. Jouanin (1955) published a new species of petrel from the Indian Ocean as Bulweria fallax. Jouanin (1957: 19) discussed the identity o

Use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot for the diagnosis and monitoring of neurocysticercosis.

A total of 70 proven cases of neurocysticercosis from la Réunion (Indian Ocean) were studied with enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) and immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) to detect specific antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Absorbance levels of antibody to crude Taenia solium cyst extract as an antigen were compared with EITB banding-pattern and computed tomography-scan results. The EITB analysis of sera and CSF from patients with active neurocysticercosis, confirmed with characteristic brain-scan imaging and highest ELISA absorbance, regularly revealed two bands with molecular

Observation- and Model-Based Estimates of Particulate Dry Nitrogen Deposition to the Oceans.

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) emissions to the atmosphere have increased significantly the deposition of nitrate (NO3-) and ammonium (NH4+) to the surface waters of the open ocean, with potential impacts on marine productivity and the global carbon cycle. Global-scale understanding of the impacts of N deposition to the oceans is reliant on our ability to produce and validate models of nitrogen emission, atmospheric chemistry, transport and deposition. In this work, ~2900 observations of aerosol NO3- and NH4+ concentrations, acquired from sampling aboard ships in the period 1995 - 2012, are used t

A 5.3-million-year-old deep-sea whale necropolis in the Diamantina Zone.

Whale falls are biodiversity oases at seabeds1-6, yet their record from the oceans has remained sparse and fragmentary6,7. Here we report the discovery of a vast whale necropolis in the Diamantina Zone (4,616- to 7,001-m depth), extending about 1,200 km along the sea floor of the southeastern Indian Ocean. This area has a deep and extensive accumulation comprising five modern natural whale-fall communities and 476 fossil cetaceans recorded. We show that carcasses host specialized communities dominated by brittle stars, bone-boring worms and chemosynthesis-based bivalves and that the fossil rec

ITS2 amplicon profiling reveals site-specific mycobiomes in Avicennia marina rhizospheres along the red sea coast.

Despite their ecological significance, the rhizosphere mycobiomes of Egyptian Red Sea Avicennia marina remain largely unexplored. This study presents the first ITS2 amplicon-based characterization of these mangrove rhizosphere fungi at two sites: Al-Kilo 17 south of Safaga (K17) and Ras Mohamed National Park (RM). Alpha diversity showed higher richness in K17, while PCoA showed clear beta diversity differences. Taxonomic profiling indicated significant site-specific communities; Linear Discriminant Analysis Effect Size identified significant biomarkers across all hierarchical levels Ascomycota

Litoarbolide A: an undescribed sesquiterpenoid from the Red Sea soft coral Litophyton arboreum with an in vitro anti-malarial activity evaluation.

Soft corals distributed across the Red Sea coasts are a rich source of diverse and bioactive natural products. Chemical probing of the Red Sea soft coral Litophyton arboreum led to isolation and structural characterization of an undescribed sesquiterpenoid, litoarbolide A (1), along with 14 previously reported metabolites (2-15). The chemical structures of the isolates were assigned based on NMR as well as high resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) data. Litoarbolide A is supposed to be the biosynthetic precursor to other sesquiterpenoids, which formed via further po

Zinc source differentiation in hydrothermal vent mollusks: Insight from Zn isotope ratios.

Hydrothermal vent represents an extreme environment where metal-enriched fluids are in contact with chemosymbiotic animals. In the present study, Zn isotopic compositions were determined in multiple tissues of three dominant hydrothermal vent mollusks (the mussel Bathymodiolus marisindicus and two gastropods Chrysomallon squamiferum and Gigantopelta aegis) collected from a hydrothermal vent field (Southwest Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean). We found approximately 1.78‰ differences in the δ66Zn values among the three vent mollusks despite of their similar range of Zn concentrations. The signif

Polypocephalus barsami sp. nov., a New Species of Polypocephalidae Meggitt, 1924 (Lecanicephalidea) from the Persian Gulf.

INTRODUCTION: Although many batoid species, known as final hosts of lecanicephalidean cestodes, exist in the Persian Gulf, no knowledge regarding this cestode order is available for this region. This study is the first one focusing on this order in the Persian Gulf. METHODS: A total of 11 cowtail stingrays, Pastinachus sephen (Forsskål), were collected from the north eastern Persian Gulf. Isolated cestodes were fixed in 10% seawater-buffered formalin and stored in 70% ethanol. For morphological examinations, worms were stained using acetic carmine; a subset was prepared for SEM. Orygmatobothrium persiense n. sp. (Cestoda: Phyllobothriidea) from the Arabian Smooth-Hound Shark Mustelus mosis (Triakidae) in the Persian Gulf.

A new species of Orygmatobothrium Diesing, 1863 was discovered from Mustelus mosis Hemprich et Ehrenberg in the north-eastern Persian Gulf. Orygmatobothrium persiense n. sp. is the fourth valid species of its genus and differs from its congeners by the number of the proglottids. In addition, the testes distributed in 3-4 rows deep in cross sections, the length of the cephalic peduncle, and a conspicuous bothridial cleft above the apical sucker distinguish the new species, respectively, from O. juani, O. musteli, and O. schmittii. This is the first time that a species of Orygmatobothrium is des

[Tsunami--the death waves].

On December 26, 2004, the fourth strongest earthquake over the past century struck in the Indian Ocean off the western coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Measuring 9.0 in magnitude, the earthquake triggered massive tsunamis that struck the Indian Ocean countries and Somalia, and killed more than tens of thousands and destroyed entire villages, leaving over a million homeless. Tsunamis are water waves that are caused by sudden vertical movement of a large area of the sea floor during an undersea earthquake. Tsunami speed can exceed 800 kilometers per hour, and as it reaches shallow water the

Phylogeographic Reconstructions of a Rift Valley Fever Virus Strain Reveals Transboundary Animal Movements from Eastern Continental Africa to the Union of the Comoros.

Major explosive outbreaks of Rift Valley fever (RVF), an arthropod borne zoonotic disease, occur in humans and animals with significant mortality and economic impact across continental Africa and the Indian Ocean region (Madagascar, the Comoros archipelago). Recently, sporadic human cases have been reported in Mayotte and Grande Comore, two islands belonging to the Comoros archipelago. To identify the hypothetical source of virus introduction in an inter-epidemic or a post-epidemic period, a longitudinal survey of livestock was set up in Comorian ruminant populations, known to be susceptible h

Multicenter EuroTravNet/GeoSentinel study of travel-related infectious diseases in Europe.

We analyzed prospective data on 17,228 European patients who sought treatment at GeoSentinel sites from 1997 to 2007. Gastrointestinal illness (particularly in tourists), fever (those visiting friends and relatives [VFRs]), and skin disorders (in tourists) were the most common reasons for seeking medical care. Diagnoses varied by country of origin, region visited, or categories of travelers. VFRs who returned from sub-Saharan Africa and Indian Ocean islands were more likely to experience falciparum malaria than any other group. Multiple correspondence analysis identified Italian, French, and S
