Mice gut microbiota programming by using the infant food profile. The effect on growth, gut microbiota and the immune system.

During the complementary feeding (CF) period, nutritional imbalances can have negative consequences not only on a child's health in the short term but also later in adulthood, as a phenomenon known as "nutritional programming" takes place. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible changes in body growth, gut microbiota (GM) and the immune system in mice fed with two different commercial sterilized baby foods in jars (BFJs) for CF. Mice fed with different BFJs (A and B groups) showed an accelerated growth from the fifth week of life when compared with the control (C) group. Group A sho

Poor infant inhibitory control predicts food fussiness in childhood - A possible protective role of n-3 PUFAs for vulnerable children.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) children are more impulsive towards a sweet reward and have altered feeding behavior in adulthood. We hypothesized that early life inhibitory control predicts feeding behaviors later on in childhood, and the consumption of n-3 PUFAs during infancy may protect IUGR children from developing problematic feeding behaviors. 156 children had information on the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (ECBQ) at 18 months, Food Frequency Questionnaire at 48 months and Children׳s Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) at 72 months. There was a significant negative cor

A case of infant botulism with a possible link to infant formula milk powder: evidence for the presence of more than one strain of Clostridium botulinum in clinical specimens and food.

Infant botulism was confirmed in a 5-month-old female by both isolation of Clostridium botulinum type B and by detection of type B botulinum neurotoxin in rectal washout and faeces. DNA fingerprinting of nine isolates from faeces yielded two different amplified-fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) patterns. C. botulinum was isolated from two of 14 food and drink items from the patient's home: C. botulinum type A was recovered from an opened container of dried rice pudding and C. botulinum type B from opened infant formula milk powder. Ten C. botulinum type B isolates from the opened infant form

Early short-term infant food supplementation, maternal weight loss and duration of breast-feeding: a randomised controlled trial in rural Senegal.

OBJECTIVE: Early supplementation of breastfed infants may have consequences both for the mother and the child. We hypothesised that it would result in decreased maternal weight loss and in shorter durations of breastfeeding and birth intervals. DESIGN: Controlled randomised population-based trial. SETTING: Six villages in the Sine area of Senegal, West Africa. SUBJECTS: Healthy breastfed infants and their mothers, 68 controls and 66 supplemented infants at randomization. INTERVENTION: Supplementation with high-energy, nutrient dense food from 4 to 7 months of age, twice daily under supervi

Genomic insights into antimicrobial resistance and isolation source classification of Cronobacter sakazakii from infant and toddler food in the United States.

Cronobacter sakazakii is an opportunistic foodborne pathogen associated with severe infections in infants, linked to powdered infant formula (PIF) and related products. We conducted genomic profiling of C. sakazakii (n=209) from infant and toddler food in the United States, comprising all publicly available genomes for this source, through the integration of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) gene (ARG), plasmid replicon, virulence gene, phylogenetic, and pan-genome analyses. We further applied a machine learning (ML)-driven isolation source classification approach based on pan-genome features to

Strain-level microbial signatures and inferred functional alterations in infants with food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis.

BACKGROUND: The complex relationship between the gut microbiome and immune system development during infancy is considered a key factor in the rising rates of pediatric allergic diseases. Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (AP), the earliest identified form of non-IgE-mediated food allergy in infants, occurs at the mucosal surface where dietary proteins, intestinal microbes, and immune cells directly interact, and increases the risk for life threatening IgE-mediated food allergy, making it an important model for understanding early food allergic disease development. The question of ho

Deserters on the atopic march: Risk factors, immune profile and clinical outcomes of food sensitized-tolerant infants.

BACKGROUND: A few studies have investigated the antecedents and outcomes of infants who demonstrate IgE sensitization to foods that they clinically tolerate. Improved understanding of this sensitized-tolerant phenotype may inform strategies for the prevention of food allergy. METHODS: In an Australian birth cohort (n = 1074), assembled using an unselected antenatal sampling frame, participants were categorized as nonsensitized (NS), sensitizedtolerant (ST), or food allergic (FA) based on skin prick testing and food challenge at 12 months of age. Environmental exposures were recorded throughou

High Prevalence of Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Autoantibodies in Infants with Food Protein-Induced Proctitis/Proctocolitis: Autoimmunity Involvement?

Background. Food protein-induced proctitis/proctocolitis (FPIP) is the most common noninfectious colitis in children in the first year of life. Along with the overall clinical symptoms, diarrhoea and rectal bleeding are the main manifestations of the disease. There is no routine noninvasive test that would be specific for this type of colitis. The aim of our study was to find a noninvasive laboratory test or tests that may be helpful in differential diagnosis of food protein-induced proctitis/proctocolitis. Methods. ANA, ANCA, ASCA, a-EMA, a-tTg, specific IgE, total IgE, IgG, IgA, IgM, and con

Challenge confirmation of late-onset reactions to extensively hydrolyzed formulas in infants with multiple food protein intolerance.

BACKGROUND: Many infants with cow's milk protein intolerance have adverse reactions to soy, casein and whey hydrolysate formula and to other foods. The recent development of Neocate, a hypoallergenic, nutritionally complete infant formula composed of individual amino acids and other nutrients, has enabled these infants to be stabilized. OBJECTIVE: We observed the effect of food challenges in infants with reported hypersensitivity to hypoallergenic formulas. METHODS: Eighteen infants (median age, 7 1/2 months) were given Neocate formula for 2 months and then underwent a 7-day double-blind pla

Long-term effects of food supplementation and psychosocial intervention on the physical growth of Colombian infants at risk of malnutrition.

280 Colombian infants at risk of malnutrition were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 experimental groups formed by the presence/absence of 2 interventions: (1) food supplementation for the entire family, from mid-pregnancy until the target child was 3 years old, and (2) a twice-weekly home-visiting program to promote cognitive development, from birth until age 3. All families received free medical care and were studied prospectively. At 3 years of age, children who had received food supplementation averaged 2.6 cm and 642 grams larger than controls. Home visiting and supplementation together reduced

Parent perspectives on guided self-care approaches to ensure timely access to therapy in infants with food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Early allergen immunotherapy (AIT), including oral immunotherapy (OIT), is increasingly recognized as a disease-modifying intervention for infants with Immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food allergy. However, limited access to allergy specialists and long wait times often prevent timely initiation during the critical early-life window. Guided self-care models could offer alternative care pathways, yet parents' perspectives on such approaches remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To explore parents' perceptions of the acceptability, feasibility, and conditions required for guided self
