[Evaluation of a local infant formula enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids produced in Israel].

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are vital for the normal development of the brain and the eye retina in infancy. Breast milk contains significant amounts of PUFA, and compensates for their low production in infancy. Only recently a few companies with worldwide product distribution have started to enrich infant formula with PUFA. We evaluated the safety and clinical efficacy of a locally made PUFA-enriched infant formula, produced for the first time in Israel. 50 normal, full term infants participated in a prospective, randomized double-blind study. Half received a regular whey-predominant i

Surveillance and molecular typing of Cronobacter spp. in commercial powdered infant formula and follow-up formula from 2011 to 2013 in Shandong Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Infection with Cronobacter spp. leads to neonatal meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis and bacteremia. Cronobacter spp. are reported to comprise an important pathogen contaminating powdered infant formula (PIF) and follow-up formula (FUF), although little is known about the contamination level of Cronobacter spp. in PIFs and FUFs in China. RESULTS: In total, 1032 samples were collected between 2011 and 2013. Forty-two samples were positive, including 1.6% in PIFs and 6.5% in FUFs. The strains were susceptible to most antibiotics except for cefoxitin. Pulsed-field gel electrophore

Effect of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles From Infant Formula Milk Powder on Colon Cells In Vitro.

Zinc is an essential trace element that participates in numerous metabolic processes; however, excessive exposure may interfere with the absorption of other metals, such as copper. In recent years, nanotechnology has experienced rapid growth, and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have garnered significant attention due to their versatile physicochemical properties and increasing applications in industrial and consumer products. These nanoparticles are widely incorporated into plastics, ceramics, cosmetics, and even infant formula milk powder for their antimicrobial and nutritional properties.

The facilitation of gut barrier function by infant formula mimicking breast milk protein in piglets.

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants. Simulating breast milk, which maximizes the restoration of composition and proportion in breast milk protein, is the ultimate goal of upgrading powdered infant milk products. Although products upgraded with protein, including lactoferrin and osteopontin, have been sold on the market, their effect on intestinal health is not yet well-defined. This study evaluated the effect of protein-upgraded infant formula on the intestinal barrier of piglets. Seven-day-old piglets were used as a model and fed normal and upgraded powdered milk formula f

Characterization and bioavailability of a novel coenzyme Q10 nanoemulsion used as an infant formula supplement.

Supplementation with Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), in patients with its deficiency, has greater odds of success if the treatment is carried out early with an appropriate formulation. For neonatal CoQ10 deficiency, infant formula supplementation could be an attractive option. However, solid CoQ10 cannot be solubilized or dispersed in milk matrix leading to an inefficient CoQ10 dosage and poor intestinal absorption. We developed and characterized a high-dose CoQ10 oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsion suitable to supplement infant formula without modifying its organoleptic characteristics. CoQ10 powder and so

A novel photoreactive DNA-binding dye for detecting viable Klebsiella pneumoniae in powdered infant formula.

In addition to Cronobacter spp., Klebsiella pneumoniae is another opportunistic bacterial pathogen present in powdered infant formula (PIF) that can cause pneumonia, septicemia, and other diseases. In this study, a rapid and specific method based on a fluorescence probe was developed for detecting viable K. pneumoniae in PIF samples via the combination of recombinase-aided amplification (RAA) with thiazole orange monoazide (TOMA) dye (the TOMA-RAA assay hereafter). As a novel photosensitive DNA-intercalating dye, TOMA was used to penetrate bacterial cells, including both dead and viable cells,

Raw bovine milk improves gut responses to feeding relative to infant formula in preterm piglets.

For preterm neonates, the quality of the first milk is crucial for intestinal maturation and resistance to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Among other factors, milk quality is determined by the stage of lactation and processing. We hypothesized that unprocessed mature bovine milk (BM; raw bovine milk) would have less bioactivity than corresponding bovine colostrum (BC) in a preterm pig model, but have improved bioactivity relative to its homogenized, pasteurized, spray-dried equivalent, whole milk powder (WMP), or a bovine milk protein-based infant formula (IF). For 5 days, newborn preterm pi

Longitudinal Evaluation from Birth to Adolescence of Soy Protein-Based Infant Formula Compared with Cow Milk-Based Formula and Breastfeeding: A Comprehensive Summary of Findings.

Breastfeeding is widely recognized as the gold standard food for infants. However, many families use infant formulas, including soy-based products, which have not been studied for their long-term safety and developmental effects. The Beginnings Study and the Beginnings Follow-Up Study represent one of the most comprehensive prospective cohorts designed to examine how early infant feeding is related to growth, body composition, cardiovascular, microbiome, and skeletal outcomes, neurodevelopment, and reproductive maturation through adolescence. Conducted in Arkansas, United States, the study enr

Fluorinated liquid-crystal monomers in infant formulas and implication for health risk.

Fluorinated liquid-crystal monomers (FLCMs), a new class of potential persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) emerging pollutants, are extensively utilized in the display panel of various electronic devices. These compounds have been found in various environmental matrixes and dietary. Our previous studies have documented their ubiquitous occurrence in high fat foodstuffs. Infants, a vulnerable group, are more susceptible to the impacts of these pollutants compared to adults. Herein, we provided an assessment of the health risks posed by FLCMs to infants, focusing on their exposure through

[Comparative characteristics of oxidative modification intensity of proteins in infant milk formulas].

Cow's milk is mainly used in the production of infant milk formulas. However, the protein composition of cow's milk differs significantly from the proteome of breast milk. In addition, various technological factors significantly affect the properties and structure of proteins, susceptibility to oxidative processes. This article uses a method of complex evaluation of the products of oxidative modification of proteins to characterize the total level of carbonyl compounds with the analysis of the ratio of aldehyde-dinitrophenylhydrazones (ADNPH) and ketone-dinitrophenylhydrazones (CDNPH), which i

In vivo and in vitro evaluation of the residual allergenicity of partially hydrolysed infant formulas.

Hypoallergenic infant formulas are commonly used for genetically predisposed children and infants diagnosed with cow's milk allergy. This study describes both in vitro and in vivo approaches to assess residual allergenicity of partially hydrolysed infant formulas. Electrophoretic patterns indicated that β-lactoglobulin and other whey proteins were largely degraded. For safety reasons, according to the European commission-guidelines, it is required that the sensitizing capacity of hypoallergenic formulas is tested in an animal model. In contrast to whey sensitization, no elevated levels of whey

Formulas containing hydrolysed protein for prevention of allergy and food intolerance in infants.

BACKGROUND: Allergies and food reactions are common and may be associated with foods including adapted cow's milk formula. Formulas containing hydrolysed proteins have been used to treat infants with allergy or food intolerance. However, it is unclear whether hydrolysed formula can be advocated for prevention of allergy and food intolerance in infants without evidence of allergy or food intolerance. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of feeding hydrolysed formulas on allergy and food intolerance in infants and children compared to adapted cow's milk or human breast milk. If hydrolysed formul
