Background: The COVID-19 pandemic severely restricted access to routine dental care, resulting in delayed treatment and increased presentation of dental emergencies. When combined with SARS-CoV-2 infection, these conditions may significantly impair psycho-social well-being and quality of life (QoL). This study assessed the impact of dental emergencies on QoL in patients with COVID-19. Methods: A cross-sectional case-control study was conducted between January 2022 and April 2024, including 240 adult patients with confirmed COVID-19. The case group comprised 60 patients presenting with dental e

INTRODUCTION: To achieve effective infection control only disinfecting instruments is not perfect when sterilization is an ideal method. Few chemical disinfection methods have disadvantage of not killing spores as cross infection is of great importance in dentistry; Standard sterilization and disinfection protocols must be followed by dental health care professionals for efficient infection control.
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of undiluted concentrations of Durr Dental system, Bacillol, Savlon, and Dettol for disinfection of striated and nonstriated orthodontic ins

BACKGROUND: It is essential for practicing dentists to have adequate knowledge of HIV/AIDS and its implications in the dental practice. Their attitudes should also be up to the professional expectations. This study aimed to assess knowledge of HIV/AIDS infection and attitudes towards its patients among dental students in Saudi Arabia.
METHODS: A questionnaire was prepared and distributed among a sample of dental students in Saudi Arabia. Twenty questions related to knowledge, attitudes, and oral manifestation of HIV were presented.
RESULTS: A total of 405 questionnaires were completed (67% r

Gingivitis and periodontitis are both highly prevalent gum diseases characterized by an accumulation of a polymicrobial biofilm (dental plaque) around teeth and inflammation in adjacent soft tissues. During dental procedures, even tooth brushing, these bacteria and their components, such as endotoxin, can easily disseminate into the systemic circulation through minor or major gingival injuries. Particularly in immuno-compromised subjects or patients with preexisting pathologic conditions, bacteremia may lead to bacterial infection of distant organs, which may cause immunological reactions. Dental procedures result in the production of bioaerosols that contaminate various environmental surfaces in the dental clinic. In order to maintain a safe environment in the dental clinic and prevent cross contamination, it is important to find alternative disinfection methods and agents to ensure effective decontamination. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a cost-effective antimicrobial agent that can be used for infection control. The purpose of this scoping review is to provide evidence from the literature supporting the routine use of HOCl as a biodecontamination and disinfection agent in denta

Decontamination of the clinical working environment and reprocessing of reusable dental instruments and devices are key components of modern infection control. This narrative review, which is part of a special issue devoted to contemporary infection control practices, highlights the latest evidence and the potential role of emerging technologies. The underpinning concepts of environmental decontamination and reprocessing have remained unchanged for many years, and key principles such as cleaning before disinfection or sterilisation remain true to the present day. What has changed in recent yea

The most important preventive and therapeutic effort to reduce inflammation is to remove the dental plaque thoroughly. Oral self-care is thus of crucial importance to achieve and maintain oral health. There is a scarcity of scientific evidence on the most effective models for behavioural change aimed to improve oral hygiene. There is a need for randomized-controlled trials, based on behavioural sciences and performed with great methodological rigour, to investigate the usefulness of these proposed behavioural changes. Oral hygiene regimens for patients with natural teeth as well as dental impl

BACKGROUND Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a condition manifesting as necrotic bone for 8 weeks or more, with no history of radiotherapy. It is linked to the use of antiresorptive drugs, such as bisphosphonates and denosumab. We discuss in this case report the importance of infection control during clinical procedures in patients taking antiresorptives. CASE REPORT Our case report describes a 52-year-old woman who had received zoledronic acid injections for 7 years, who presented with osteonecrosis of the jaw in the region of teeth 24, 25, and 26, with no local trauma. The report proceeds to descr

This scoping review explored the prevalence of work-related psychological and physical health issues among Australian dental practitioners, mapped across key occupational hazard domains (psychosocial/organisational, physical/ergonomic and environmental/infection-related) and summarised reported impacts on practitioner well-being and workforce outcomes. Databases including Embase, PsycINFO and PubMed were systematically searched from 2015 to March 2025 to capture contemporary practice and COVID-19 pandemic period. Eligible studies focused on Australian dental practitioners and reported the prev

PURPOSE: To assess the antimicrobial effects of silver ion tubing (ST) on dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) and their sustainability over time.
METHODS: Six dental chair units (DCUs) equipped with ST and four with common tubing (CT) were included in the study. Repeated flushing with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was conducted to dislodge biofilms. Then, genetic analysis of the PBS was performed. The tubing was also detached and scanned under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to observe the adherent biofilm on the lumen walls.
RESULTS: Low bacterial levels were noted in both the CT and ST g

Water is essential during dental care. Physical and chemical techniques should be used to maintain a good water quality with respect to bacteria, and to ensure the safety of exposed patients and dental staff. The aim of this survey was to assess the modalities used by dental practitioners in Eastern France to maintain the water quality of their dental unit waterlines (DUWLs). A questionnaire about water quality maintenance practices was sent to 870 dental offices in 2016. The questionnaires were completed by 153 dental offices, covering about 223 dental care units. The majority of units were f

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is a chronic inflammatory condition manifesting with erythema and granulomatous enlargement of the orofacial soft tissues with predilection for children and young adults. The clinical spectrum and severity are highly variable, ranging from subtle to disfiguring swelling, ulceration, and/or neurological manifestations in the orofacial region. The precise cause of OFG is unclear and its diagnosis is one of exclusion relying on thorough history and physical and clinicopathologic correlation. Management of OFG remains challenging, and may require retreatment for cont

OBJECTIVES: Dental pain is a common presenting symptom in the acute care setting. Even in the absence of overt infection, many physicians routinely prescribe antibiotics such as penicillin. The authors sought to test the hypothesis that penicillin is not necessary or beneficial in the treatment of undifferentiated dental pain without overt infection.
METHODS: This prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted at an urban teaching hospital with approximately 105,000 emergency department visits per year. A convenience sample of adult emergency department patients

Retention of teeth into advanced age makes caries and periodontitis lifelong concerns. Dental caries occurs when acidic metabolites of oral streptococci dissolve enamel and dentin. Dissolution progresses to cavitation and, if untreated, to bacterial invasion of dental pulp, whereby oral bacteria access the bloodstream. Oral organisms have been linked to infections of the endocardium, meninges, mediastinum, vertebrae, hepatobiliary system, and prosthetic joints. Periodontitis is a pathogen-specific, lytic inflammatory reaction to dental plaque that degrades the tooth attachment. Periodontal dis

Antibiotic duration is a central question in antimicrobial stewardship, yet dental prescribing often remains anchored to fixed five- or seven-day courses despite the source-control-dependent nature of many odontogenic infections. Current dental guidance supports short courses and clinical reassessment but provides limited structure for deciding whether continued antibiotic exposure remains justified once treatment has begun. This narrative review aimed to integrate clinical, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic, dental, and ethical evidence within a marginal benefit-harm framework and to translate

BACKGROUND: The microorganism Helicobacter pylori has been closely linked to chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric cancer, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Despite the current treatment regimens that lead to successful management of H. pylori-positive chronic gastritis, the reinfection rate is high. It has been suggested that one of the possible mechanisms of reinfection is the recolonization from dental plaque. The purpose of this study was to determine whether dental plaque, poor oral hygiene, and periodontal disease were risk factors for H. pylori infection.
